Did a search, didn't see much.

Can anyone point me to an explanation of how artillery works and what it's good for? The manual does not explain "shells" for instance.

I can't seem to use my artillery much and I don't know why. It never allows me to fire.

Help appreciated.

Thanks.

Shells represent ammo, with every lvl you can fire once. Usually they're gathering 1+/turn, but if in low supply, they might get no ammo or even loose some.

Also firing her shells during enemy turn reduces ammo. You may restrict your arty from firing in enemie's turn (rightclick on unit, choose related option).

Upgraded to lvl 1 HA, every shot reduces enemy entrenchement by 2.

There is only one level, though, right?

Also, why won't it let me shoot on my turn when it says that I have shells available?

Basics:

Artillery supports troops when attacked. They increase defensive ability of unit they are supporting.

When attacking artillery will "soften" the opponent. Check the de-entrench & de-moralization characteristics (upper right). Rocket Arty has very high de-moralization.

Also, there is no special function to fire arty. Just select it, and hover over an enemy unit you should get the target and combat predictions. Note that arty has a range so you can do this to an enemy unit that is 2 hexes away (hopefully over your own unit protecting the arty).

not sure if it was said before but arty can only fire BEFORE movement. So if you move and want to attack it won't work. You have to wait one turn.

That's why I don't build artillery to be honest. It is the very last thing I build and research... only if there is nothing left to do. But that's probably wrong... arty is doing a great job when it comes to de-entrenchment and demoralization --> better combat results.

Ah, did not realize you can only fire BEFORE movement. Thanks!

Still working out how to use this unit. Not really gotten the hang of it yet.

Seems like the difference between regular and rocket artillery is marginal, with rocket having the edge. Is there any special advantage to regular?

glad to help :)

right click and select properties and then compare the two units to see the difference

afaik rocket artillery is better for demoralization and the normal artillery is better for de-entrenchment.
