22 Feb 43 I don't know whether to wax poetic about losing Edgar Allen Poe, or drown my sorrows over the loss of Sam Adams. US ships bombard Kusaie Island. Night Naval bombardment of Kusaie Island at 125,118 Allied Ships CA Salt Lake City CA Louisville CL Trenton CL Detroit DD Monaghan DD Maury DD McCall DD Gridley Japanese ground losses: 352 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled Non Combat: 8 destroyed, 17 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled Airbase hits 1 Airbase supply hits 3 Runway hits 11 Port hits 5 Port supply hits 1 Dutch sub O19 hits small tanker TK Samui Maru with 3 torpedoes. One is a dud. The ship is empty but sinking audio heard immediately after combat. Well north of Miri, Harder spots a convoy of huge tankers. 2 torpedoes are fired at San Ramon Maru but miss. It appears that the big tanker convoys from Singapore are still moving through the middle of the South China Sea. Back at Kusaie Island, during the day, enemy ships appear. The second battle for Kusaie is essentially over. Troops will rest and wait for the enemy battleships to leave. At Babar, some troops are still unloading from two burning and sinking transports. In the morning, 42 Oscars, probably from Koepang, sweep. 32 Wildcats are on ranged CAP from the southeast. The Oscars get the better of the Wildcats. 13 Bettys then arrive, escorted by 35 A6M5 Zeros. This time, the CAP gets past the escorts quickly, without engaging most of them. 10 Bettys are downed. 3 drop torpedoes but miss. 23 Lilys then appear, without escort. 37 Wildcats intercept, but the raid isn't spotted till late and no bombers are engaged, before or after bombing. Morning Air attack on TF, near Babar at 76,117 Weather in hex: Partial cloud Raid spotted at 15 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet. This time, the Wildcats do engage, to some extent. 6 Sallys are downed. 25 Sallys drop bombs on the US troops on Babar. I noticed at Babar that some xAKLs there that were unloading supply were now also unloading troops from Americal. I guess they plucked some men out of the sea, and are now landing them. I hadn't seen previously loaded ship do that before. Near Prome, northwest of Rangoon, there's a stack of isolated enemy troops. Nothing substantial, but I sent a small unit to clean them up. Odds were terrible. Results were fine. Ground combat at 54,50 (near Prome) Allied Deliberate attack Attacking force 2176 troops, 12 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 60 Defending force 3854 troops, 26 guns, 15 vehicles, Assault Value = 29 Allied adjusted assault: 6 Japanese adjusted defense: 169 Allied assault odds: 1 to 28 Combat modifiers Defender: terrain(+), experience(-) Attacker: leaders(-), fatigue(-) Japanese ground losses: 71 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 9 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled Guns lost 5 (1 destroyed, 4 disabled) Allied ground losses: 20 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled Assaulting units: 503rd Parachute Regiment Defending units: 211th Ship Eng Coy 311th Ship Eng Coy 18th JNAF AF Unit 15th JAAF AF Bn 32nd Special Base Force 204th Ship Eng Coy 3rd Air Div /1 On the day, air losses were 12 F4F-4s and 5 Catalinas versus 10 Bettys, 7 Oscars, 6 Sallys and 1 Zero.
