Good news part 2

Java has just about fallen. One more week of mopping up of the remnant of Dutch forces.

Not so great news

First assault on Singapore with 8 x Inf divisions.

Michael is an excellent player (no surprises here ) and has made Singapore quite a nasty strong hold. By going after Java first I have given him the opportunity to rebuild the Indian divisions and consolidate his position.

One Inf division is shattered but the others are okay.

Not so great news part 2.

Chikuma and 2 x DDs whilst raiding were picked off by a vastly stronger Allied task force. First real naval setback of the war.

Mike had been quietly waiting for this opportunity to strike as soon as my CVs were confirmed not to be in the area.

I am very concerned his CVs are parked out on my flank somewhere waiting for a similar opportunity to cause havoc amongst my shipping.

A troubling development not for the material loss, but the patience and calculation exhibited by Michael which gives me pause for thought.

Having one division savaged is par for the course. I bet Allies have changed commanders.

Couple of questions: Do refineries produce supplies?

Is this mod some kind of modified scenario 2 ground forces game?

Finally...when can the Allied fleet rearm at? Singers?

Hi Lowpe

Michael as you would expect is very switched on. I suspect you are on spot on with your assessment about commanders

Refineries do not produce supplies

The ground forces are Sce 1 Orbat, though at start of the game the 7th is not restricted. The naval gds are also combined into a couple of very handy assault brigades. There are extra naval units including some wonderful CVLs.

I would say the Allies are re-arming at Ceylon and in Oz (Perth, Sydney?). Nothing is open to them in the DEI anymore.

The economy in this mod can be an issue if you ramp up too much. HI generation and existing stockpiles are low and the economy is in worst shape than Sce 1 game due to the increase ramp up of the Japanese war machine prior to hostilities. Of course this is balanced by better starting dispositions and extra naval/air units.

I am enjoying the new toys but I could crash the economy

John 3rd can provide far more insight than me and I could have a couple things wrong above. Overall the design team has done a wonderful job of creating a very interesting scenario which I am thoroughly enjoying.

23rd Jan 42 update

Game continues at an excellent pace. Michael being the complete gentleman, has forwarded to me all his notes on Japan and the information and detail has been quite amazing.

China- arguably the theatre that is causing the Allies the most unrest at the moment. The Chinese Army in the field has largely been routed and has commenced a full scale retreat into more defensive terrain. Key battle is around Sian where 120K of Chinese are trying to escape a noose. If I can maul them in the open terrain it will make the push for Chungking easier.

Allied units destroyed at Singapore

Nothing too strange here just the usual. The only exception I believe is the 48th Gurka which actually starts in Singapore in this mod.

Central Pacific- still pushing to eliminate the small outposts destroying his capability to deploy PBYs to track KB.

The Line Islands, Canton, Baker, Tarawa have all been taken and IJN patrol a/c have been stationed there.

They are also surrounded by subs waiting for an opportunity which will naturally come.

Great Job on Singapore, 3 weeks early and killing 2 Indian Divisions and 2 Australian BDEs. That you help with your timeline. The Japanese are always playing beat the clock in the first 6 months of the war.

Thanks Bif, yes it has been a good start and losses overall have been pretty light.

Unfortunately it will get a bit tougher from here on in.

Sian Massacre:

I couldn't cut off the massive stack at Sian so instead decided to rough them up a bit.

Hopefully this massive formation will be combat ineffective for a good while.

All of the low hanging fruit in China has now been plucked.

You're doing well early and can now really mess with the Allies in terms of what you're going to do next.

Oz? maybe ...

India? hmmmm ...

PH? well....

They can't allocate enough to stop you everywhere, so you're making him make choices. If you can then "read" the defence, you should be able to go where he isn't built up yet.

China- Being a very accomplished player, Michael has gotten over the initial shock of the offensive up North and formed some excellent defensive positions in very good defensive terrain.

Not wanting to struggle through WW1 style in set piece costly actions, I have been able to take advantage of the better infrastructure and re-deployed a substantial part of the Northern IJA forces to the south to open up a new front. It caused an operational pause of around 10 days but now the IJA is off and cracking again.

Hopefully this will catch the Chinese completely out of position......

In open terrain the Chinese have no chance.

India- invasion underway.

Michael was prepared for this and has already made some clever moves, eg mining and placing CD guns at Cocanada.

It will cause some delays and additional casualties but overall little impact. I need Indian industry as the Empire's economic situation due to the lack of HI is precarious.

In this scenario I can't see how India is not the priority given the strain on the economy through additional ship builds and air units.

India- Full steam ahead here.

Still retaining 3 to 4 divs in reserve until I can determine how hard the Allies intend to fight for Southern India.

Resistance has been light to moderate with only poorly trained Indian formations being encountered.

If progress continues to go very well Bombay may well be looked at. Priority is Calcutta.

Indian/British casualties:

One of the reasons I like this avenue of attack is the low level of replacements for equipment for Brit/Indian formations.

I really want to inflict maximum punishment on Commonwealth formations to give me breathing space in 43.

Thus far 2 x Indian Divs and 2 x Indian Bdes have been destroyed. 2 more have mauled at Madras and I believe possibly another Indian Div is now trapped at Ceylon.

Question for all the devout Allied players; at what stage (if any) does the destruction of Indian infantry divisions become a problem for rebuilds?

Battle at Madras

Thanks Lowpe, that is my gut feel as well.

No matter how hard you hit them, zillions take their place, sometimes in a different uniform but the end result is the same in 44/45

Allied Orbat ****** Controversy Warning********OFF TOPIC******

Whilst I wait my esteemed opponent's turn I went through and had another good look at the Allied Orbat.

Without a doubt the developers have done a wonderful job on all levels, this goes without question.

One comment/query I have is with regards to Allied experience levels of some units.

Naturally, being a parochial Aussie I look at the 2nd AIF coming out of the Middle East and believe the experience levels to be slightly low for these combat proven/tested units- not much but say 75 rather than 70 for the 6th/7th Aussie.

Other interesting experience settings:

-70th British Inf Div 80/80, a good unit but higher than the Australian 9th and that much better than Aus 6th/ 7th???

- 2nd British Inf Div again being higher than all of the 2nd AIF- ???

- 4th NZ Brigade 90/90 an excellent unit but not that vastly better than other commonwealth units

- Finally all US Marine Inf divisions starting at experience 70 having seen no combat??

No doubt this has been noted before in previous threads and again this does not detract from the overall wonderful effort. Only talking minor discrepancies here and only in my view!

Hopefully I haven't opened a can of worms here but if it does I blame it on ANZAC Day's recent passing.

China- the critical hex. Take this position and the southern Chinese forces are cut off!

Touch and go, IJA armour racing there now

Its all about China at the moment.

The battle rages for the critical hex and emergency Chinese reinforcements may hold the line... for now.

Coming up on the right flank of the offensive is a massive combat group which should shatter the Allies front in the next few days.

If this plan works the road to Chungking should be wide open. Chinese casualties in stemming the central push have been significant. Japanese casualties moderate to light.
