I'm sure the developers are working on something, but this is vaporware until we see something solid. I've given up on anything coming out, but best of luck to them.

Sometimes a sequal is as good, rare times a bit better.

But I can still play the original. I own the Generals edition, and I have access to the SPCamo titles too.

To be honest, I'm not calling it vapour, but really, just a promise that has a lot of proving to get past when it arrives.

I'm FULLY expecting to see the game savagely attacked for almost every aspect of it's release just as easily. It's a wargame, and it's what we do. The only other area in human endeavour as nasty as a wargaming is the field of science.

Tell me about it. BATTLETECH with its he/she/they stirred up quite an outrage. Then again, there are plenty of other game genres where same things happen.

Anyone know anything about any possible progress?

This game has to be vaporware by now.

Is Joel Billings still the mouth piece for 2 x 3 Games?

Perhaps Slitherine could invite him onto the thread or give them an update directly to post in Announcements ?

Game development is a long process. How long did it take to write the first Steel Panthers?

So why change the name from "Steel Panthers" to "Steel Tigers"?

Money. It costs money to pry the IP rights to "Steel Panthers" away from whichever conglomerate has it now, and refuses to sell on.

I imagine it won't be full steam ahead on Steel Tigers until WITE 2 is out the door and stable.

Hmm. Matrix aquired steel panthers 3 way back and converted it to steel panthers world at war. Meanwhile shrapnel games got steel panthers 1 and 2 and made their own improvements. Neither made money directly from the conversions but appear to have gotten rights to sell expansion campaigns / enhanced cd’s. So perhaps they only have partial rights... our they want to break from the mold so to speak. I’m sure whatever it is it will be a decent game, but it certainly won’t be as all encompassing in content as any of the original Steel Panthers games...

And why do you say that? I've seen a good number of new games that are way more all encompassing than anything else I've seen before.

Well, even in same dev team you find games with expanded content from an old game... and oposite like instead sell 3 games (one per front) like the old version sell 1 game per year AND per front, from 3 titles to 4x3=12.

True is that today a game with a good amount content is very rare, i am not against DLC model BUT only when you dont need DLC to have something needed in base game.

Returning to ST... well i find my self now more into SEE something about game before think in content.

PD: to be fair i have in mind another game that could be true first SP successor but is not yet in dates BUT at least you have images and videos that is more than ST offer in 3 years.

My recollection may be incomplete/faulty, but here is what I know -- whoever owned the Steel Panthers Intellectual Property (IP) at the time made deal(s) with both SPCAMO and Matrix Games.

Both development groups would get the source code to the Steel Panthers version they preferred (SP3 for Matrix, SP2 for SPCAMO), and both development groups would be allowed to redistribute whatever "remixed" games they made from the source code bases they got.

The proviso was, both development groups could not *profit* from the game; i.e. the games had to be free.

Matrix Games' solution to this was the "MegaCampaigns" concept -- a massive non-linear branching campaign with RPG elements (medals being awarded) and a situation map to show where you were. Instead of paying for the game, you paid for the MegaCampaign.

SPCAMO's solution when they went from DOS to Windows versions was to make an "Enhanced Version". The free version's maximum resolution was like 800x600, but if you wanted 1600x1200 resolution, you had to pay for the Shrapnel CD. Additionally, a better map editor; ScenHack Utility, CampaignHack Utility, and encrypted tournament play mode were also part of Enhanced. Shrapnel kept adding new features to the Enhanced version over the years.

Slight correction Shrapnel is the only updated and currently upgraded (as of March of 2019) version that works on Windows 7, 8, 10 and in Linux (using Wine) and on macOS (using Boot Camp and VWMare).

For the CD version the resolutions sizes are:

640x480
800x600
1024x768
1152x864
1280x1024
1600x1280
Desktop

Using Desktop uses virtually your entire screen.

Here is some screen shots of one of my current CG's as the SS:

It was published three years after GG's Pacific War (the DOS one that you can download for free from this very site).

Well, what I mean is at release SP 1 gave us an OOB for almost every conceivable army in the world between 1939-1945. I suspect that any initial Tigers release might be East Front 42-43 or something like that. Nothing to do with quality or detail, just not as much volume in content.

Thanks, so let's say four years of design to make it right. Thus, Steel Tigers is on track guys.

Erik did a live stream of Matrix Games first game SPWaW for the 20th anniversary and in it he said Steel Tigers is being actively developed and they are trying their best to make it a true successor to the original games.

The video should still be watchable at the "twitch slitherinegroup" (I can't post a link unfortunately)

It's behind WitE2. So when they finish it, they likely go full steam on the next.

Just kidding of course. It is being actively developed.

Eric wrote (4/15/2021):
We put quite a bit of development into Steel Tigers, but had to pause it to complete War in the East 2. As mentioned earlier, it's planned to be 2by3's next project once WITE2 post-release support starts consuming less of their time, which may take a while.

source:
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=5002929

So my understanding is that Steel Tigers development will be on hold for a while.
