How do I do this?

The battle I'm fighting right now is in the desert with an unexpected visibility of 1! I'm plying the british while my opponent's plying the Germans, what are good strategies?

I can't tell you the force composition of my army since it might give the game away to Capt Chris hehehe Let's just say there's a lot of wheeled/tracked stuff but also a lot on foot.

Argh, I need help!

Move slowly,
Always lead with recon
Once you have made contact---
Bombard before moving recon and infantry forward, either with artillary or direct fire SPA.
Make sure all tanks have an infantry unit or recon patrol mounted on it.
Forget Machine Guns, ATG's and AA.
Go with Assualt tanks, SPA, SPAA, Flame Tanks, engineers (with flame throwers), Infantry (with an tank assualt weapons, no ski infantry), infiltrators, tanks with a lot of machine guns.

At the beginning move recon forward fast until contact. Once contact is made, bombard in front, move recon forward to discover where units are, move foot and mechninzed infantry, and flame tanks froward to deal with retreating and routed units. Once you come into contact with ready units again, stop and repeat the process. Remember that your opponent will be trying to do the same thing. Good luck. These type of battle require patience and a fair amount of luck.

Yeah in rushing my recon forward, 2 armored cars of mine have been destroyed maybe because I had the first turn and he had the chance to react well?

Well, it's Okcuz I got one of his half-tracks using another AC wth a Boys AT rifle hehehe

Hexes form a zig-zag when you form a straight line with your units. Lets say you are advancing East. In this example, your units (the *'s) are stacked north to south like so:

The units on the right hand hexes should be doubled up in short range fights. An infantry unit and tank, two infantry, infantry and MG, etc. This is because an enemy can come in where the arrow is, and the rest of your units cannot support your unit there. If an enemy unit comes in where the plus sign is, three or more of your units can fire. Double up your firepower on your point units.

Gary has some excellent equipment choices, so I won't elaborate further on that, other than to say Tommyguns rule all (except flamethrowers) in close. If you already have your equipment purchased for a campaign, then use what you have effectively. If you have ATG's, use them in the areas where the plus sign is. Autoguns and tanks with high MG counts go to the points, like where the arrow is above. Luck!

The U.S. are at a slight advantage here, as they have a) Thompsons and b) AFVs bristling with MGs...1x.50 cal and 2x.30 cal is naasty.

Solution: Bring your flamethrowers to the party. :) Even better if they're enclosed in something hard, tanks for example.

Agh! No flame tanks brought to battle... I was expecting a very different battlefield...

Only thing slowing down the Germans are my commandos who have sabotaged a few tanks and have actually succesfully taken my opponent's home VHes (destroying a few tanks in the process)

BUT... HE on the other hand has a lot of flame tanks.... which have claimed... maybe 5-7 tanks so far... ARGH

You did check on what the vis was going to be when you bought units didn't you? You should always check your mission in the buy screen. That button will tell you your vis for the upcoming battle. It sounds like your opponent checked the vis and that's why you are seeing a bunch of flame tanks.

Take heart however, low vis is just what the Brits need against the Germans.:)

You could use your reinforcement points to buy those flametanks, at least I would do just that, buy a lot of Wasps or Crocodiles. Wasps are quite cheap IIRC, on the other hand those Crocodiles have more other firepower and a good armor.

No Crocodiles yet (early war), and wasps will get eaten by overwatched Pz IIIs on the offense, but I get the point, good defensive units flame tanks are I guess...

****... but the Commandos are really kicking some ***, taking out an 88mm battery, a 150mm battery, FObservers, and a platoon or so of tanks so far

I just infiltrated them to places where I think the enemy will most likely pass, and also, a full force infiltration to his VHes

Those **** commandos! I never use them so they always take me by surprise. I didn't realize they were so **** tough. Argh! I do have to make a confession. I did see the 1 visibility before we started which is why I have the flame panzers (and various other short range stuff).

Argh! your flame tanks are literally roasting me! Those famed commandos are good, but when they tried to assault a flampanzer and failed the whole squad was torched!!!

And those Pnzer IIIs... AGH! hehehe

What's happening Goblin? :)

I have been on a wargaming hiatus(sp), but I couldn't stay away any longer. I had a breif obsession with Americas Army FPS for a while but soon realized that I really missed this community. I have a few PBEM games going now.

The "little one" is now a 1 year old. Not quite walking yet but very close. She's a lot of fun.

Goblin, you play DoD? COOL.. I used to play that a lot.. I quit cuz I couldn't stand the 'cheater cheater' shouts of folks on servers anymore (same with Counterstrike btw)..

On topic: ummm visibility 1.. that's like a sandstorm or something.. why not hand out blindfolds immediately hahaha.. And in a sandstorm would a flametank really function (wouldn't the flames ignite dust in the sand flying around)?

Another tip: Z-fire on hexes you suspect the enemy is in. Rommel called this "Prophylactic Fire," or so I've been told.

You also might look up the threads on Jungle Warfare, because even with 40 vis, those trees can cut the practical visibility down to 1 or 2 (if you're really lucky!).
