I am currently using the steam version of the game and I keep getting runtime errors that cause the game to crash. They happen mostly at random but sometimes the crash happens consistently making it impossible to continue some playthroughs while most recently it crashed consistently during the Allied turn as the D-day landings took place

might be an idea to also post a report, then maybe a better understanding on what it maybe, may be given

How to get a DirectX Diagnostic file:

1. click on "START"
2. click "run"
3. type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments rather than pasted into the body of the post.

once the report has been made, just attach it to your post with first adding the file to a zip, which is then permitted to attach to the forum

the error is a common one in windows and is caused by many factors tbh,,

quote:

An error that occurs during the execution of a program. In contrast, compile-time errors occur while a program is being compiled. Runtime errors indicate bugs in the program or problems that the designers had anticipated but could do nothing about. For example, running out of memory will often cause a runtime error

but there's more than a few which can cause is, background tasks running at the same time, lack of memory is only one, lack of cpu or access to a given part of memory or the hard drive for that matter can also cause the same random error, best advice is,

run as admin, have as little as possible running in the background,

have a game friendly AV program,

disable sleep or hibernate in windows or anything which scans the drive at random events and times, screen save, power saver, back up, AV scan, steam auto updates etc etc, the list is a long one tbh

Most common cause is a poor or interrupted internet connection - ISP problems - at either end of the connection.

Attached is the DxDiag. As for your other comment, I never have anything else that would eat up CPU and memory running as I play so I do not think that particular suggestion fits well here.

My internet connection is also not bad but this particular computer I have been playing on has been having some odd issues with the internet the past couple weeks so that could possibly be the issue

Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 17134) (17134.rs4_release.180410-1804)

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.6GHz

Realtek High Definition Audio Date and Size: 11/24/2015 (old)

Free Space: 100.6 GB
Total Space: 474.6 GB

are just about as much as i need to know, same spec as my test pc tbh

Event Name: AppHangB1
P1: WarInTheWest.exe

Event Name: CLR20r3 is a rest.exe error, so another app or program has error-ed

TrueImageHomeService.exe error is a back up service

so for me, take a look at your start up, and see first what's running, and i'll point you in the right direction on what imo you can close down, here's mine

i have left only the bare minimum to run on each boot and load

eg my AV and steam only, anything else isn't needed, as when ever i need work, having it already loaded in windows startup saves only a second or so on the loading time, so each and every app and program i install, doesn't have to be pre loaded and in the boot process, each and every boot, there just not needed, no matter what they do

back up, nope
AV yes

anything else, then that depends on what it is tbh, but mostly, no

sound, well it's a funny one, as i've disable mine, but not sound, on the sound app which is loaded by default, so when disabled, you still have the app, and sound works 100%, you still even get the icon, just it doesn't auto load as much junk which 99% of the time, no body uses or needs

so regarding resources that are free, atm i have steam open and chrome, so you will see what i'm using on my windows 10 pc atm

leaving 99% free for any game i test, also have you seen the guide for windows 10 and gaming i've done?

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4454024

generic it maybe, but it helps with 99% of all windows games in one way or another, and once done, it isn't over written or altered in a windows update, as its pure windows features, just re added back in.

as anyone single process from any background task can make a game hang, for almost any reason, the least amount running causes the least amount of errors i've found.

simple thing to try is screen shot your settings and alter, then play 20 to 30 turns, if it crashes, it hasn't fixed it for you and it's something else, then re put back what's altered and we can look deeper, but if it does work, you haven't lost anything but have recovered some resources which over time fill the system up with clutter and junk, mostly which isn't needed and tbh over time slows any system down and can cause some system or gaming errors

I am now using the Steam client to run the game...and have never had a crash of any kind. I am using the OpenBeta though.

It is possible that you have some sort of audio codec problem, and when the game is trying to play a particular sound, a crash occurs. I seem to recall that once being a problem way for me way back in the early days. I renamed the sound folder to NOsound to fix it at the time. You can also rename the video folder to NOvideo. Being STEAM though, if the game updates it will probably recreate them.

Oh..you can find the folders in STEAM at: SteamLibrary/SteamApps/common/Gary Grigsbys War in the West/Dat...in whatever hardrive you parked your Steam

This seems to have had limited success but whenever the Allies have a long air turn like before D-day or late game in general this issue continues to pop up even though I only have 30-35% CPU usage from the game and background programs. Whats even odder is that even if I do by some miracle manage to get through the Allied turn without a crash and get to my air turn auto save, the game will still crash either immediately there after or during my air turn without fail and reloading will cause the game to crash immediately upon opening the save. Riddle me that.

As for the sound thing, I have tried the recommended approach for disabling the sound to no discernible effect

sorry it didn't work for you, the no sound and no video approach worked for many.
