Team Yankee is good, but it is actually adapted from another author's story: The Third World War 1985 by John Hackett. I also believe there is another spinoff novel that I haven't read called Chieftains, about British tankers in that same war.

Chieftains is ok, but the author is clearly British, and is a bit biased (American's can't do anything right, British have to save the day with their invincible tanks, etc.) The ending is also very abrupt and broke my immersion in the story. Don't let that dissuade you though, it's still a great read.

Agreed, I enjoyed Chieftans but it did end very abruptly, and it diverged from Hackett's Third World War canon. Team Yankee was set in Hackett's conflict and stayed mostly true to the world Hackett created.

Its hard to believe that Hackett's 'The Third World War; August 1985' was first published in 1978! Enjoyed that and Team Yankee very much in the day. Chieftains is now on my list.

The comment about abrupt endings can be used for several others in the genre, unfortunately. Frankly, avoiding that was one of the main drivers behind moving to a multi volume series. There is a lot of stuff going on during a war, and unless the subject of the story is focused at a low level, you need to capture the sweep of history in the making. Hard to do in one book.

Hope you enjoy our shot at telling the story.

Ever wonder what the role of those little European carriers was in NATO's Cold War strategy? Bart takes a look in our latest blog post, here: NATO aircraft carriers

I am just starting to explore the NF scenarios. What a great way to spend an afternoon, heck evening, heck morning, heck next day. <g> I do hope that it comes out in a hardcover because it is easier for me to read, but I'm already intrigued.

I do have one question that I would like some verification on. I recently re-downloaded all of the Community Scenarios back into my Community Folder. I have noticed that with the NF scenarios, I often have one scenario listed normally, and a similarly-named one with the CoW designation at the end. I know what the CoW is, but I own everything that CMANO has put out so I automatically pick up everything from all of the DLC modules. My question: Should I use the scenario with the file that is with or without the CoW designation?

I also always perform an update with any available INI file, but I would like to know if that INI file for the scenario works for both set ups. Can someone explain how this is set up?

Thanks.

Doug

The files with the COW designation are set up to use COW and the .INI file updates both types. Not all scenarios use COW as some don't involve much air combat.

The players guide at the end of today's blog has some suggestions if you want to ease into the campaign. If you want to follow in sequence, scenario #1 will kick your butt, as will #2, but #3 and beyond are certainly manageable with a couple exceptions.

Bart,

After playing Scenario #1 I'm ready to surrender. <lol> I LOVE it, though.

I'm still confused, however, about which of the two scenario that I should use. Just verifying, since I own CoW, I assume that that is the one to use, and the other is strictly for those who do not own CoW. Is that correct?

BTW, I love how the scenario matches the excerpt of your book. It almost puts me in the cockpit of that F-16. I don't know how the book turns out, but I didn't fare to well against those SU-27s, either. <g>

Yes. Since you have Chains of War, use the one marked COW and you'll get aircraft damage as a feature in the scenario.

I think it was that incident with the F-16s and the Su-27s that hooked Joel into writing an AAR, which then caught my attention. So I guess you could say that little snippet is the genesis of our partnership.

Glad you're enjoying it. Scenario #2 is another tough one but completely different.

Bart,

I have played with a/c damage and no-comms before and I love it. Today, in that first scenario, one F-16 survived the initial onslaught and was limping home. I thought that he might make it, but his plane was on fire. He didn't. I really love the options that CoW brings to the table.

Scenario #1, however, reminds me of Davy Crockett at rgw Alamo, or Custer at Little Big Horn. I'm nowhere close to winning that. <lol>

Great job with the book. I want to read more NOW. <g>

Baltic Fury sounds very daunting...

Any ideas for the Balkan scenarios? I've been working on one for a few months; it's very complicated in terms of design. I've redesigned the same scenario around 10 times and it still is nowhere near release. Too many sides!

Also, will the SAR be updated to include every scenario? I know NF 1 has a few rescue helis available.

Working on the finishing touches to Baltic Fury #1 'Storm the Gates' right now. I was supposed to be working on the last of the Iceland scenarios but got distracted...

Eventually I'll go back and update quite a few of the scenarios for the SAR events, I think it adds a lot. Its just not a priority, H-Hr will be one that gets it.

I'm not 100% sorted out on how I'll handle the Balkans yet. Both Operation Deny Flight and Sharp Guard are in effect but with different force structures than historical.

Sharp Guard has the Italian Carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi and a few ships. Deny Flight has mostly Italian, French, some American and NATO AWACS.

NATO's approach (pre-war) is tempered by the continuing threat from the Soviets. Historically nations were looking to put their navies and air forces to work so that is different.

Serbia is going to be pressured to join with the Soviets - but I won't reveal if it will or not - or if it does, when. Uprising and civil war will be part of the problem. Of course SAR will be part of it – gotta give Scott O’Grady a chance!

I look forward to your scenario.

Thanks for the Blog. As always with extremely good pictures.

There you give some advices to CMANO beginners. But what about the best approach to NF?

Could it be this: wait for the first book (published presumably on winter 2018) then read the prewar chapter then play NF1 then read the book chapter about NF1 then play NF2 then read the book chapter about NF2 then play NF3 etc...?

I would say that the best approach is to play the scenarios as you can. The books are about the characters who experience bits of the scenarios, not about the scenarios themselves. So there aren't really any spoilers in the scenarios unless you are paying very close attention.

If you play the scenarios first, you'll have a couple of 'Ah-Ha' moments for certain, and a few 'hay I played that guy...' type moments as well.

I highly recommend that you play the game, and read the book, as the mood comes over you.

That's all I'll say on that I think.

Can’t wait though I have been wondering how Finland will fit in later scenarios and the books will we see an upraising perhaps?
Oh and what bits of equipment, aircraft and what not that never got made due to the end of the Cold War exist in the Northern fury universe?

As far as equipment goes. Finland does not acquire the F-18s as the US is not selling any, nor would they sell them to Finland considering the proximity and likelihood the technology, if not the aircraft themselves would fall into Soviet hands.

Instead, Finland leans on its neighbour and purchases 48 surplus AJ-37 Viggen interceptors to replace the MiG-21s. The J-35 Drakens were retained but the advanced Aim-9Ps were in very short supply, again due to US export restrictions but also because they were being held by anyone who had them. The Aim-9B and Aim-4Fs were plentiful though.

Not much change in the Finish Navy.

The 46 MiG-21s are transferred back to the USSR although the details of the transaction are not widely known. The 26 'bis' end up in Syria while the older F-13s end up scattered through central Africa.

During the cold war Finland was bound to Paris peace treaty and not allowed to have more than sixty fighter aircrafts. But Finland trained surplus pilots. There are evidents that Sweden stored surplus Dragen fighters for Finland in case of conflict. Draken and mig-21 was already in use so it would be fast to replace dragens if needed.

It's probably past time for an update, thanks for the prompt. I might put out a quick blog in the next week or so to summarize it better

We're working feverishly on it. I've just been through it for Revision #8 and its looking really good, we have a 3rd set of eyes going over Revision #8 as well - she's about half way done. Joel has just finished edits and fixes for revision 7 and is starting on #8.

A couple more scenes have hit the editing room floor so we'll try and get those out as blogs soon.

The website is in need of a new manager and that is in the works. The business side is chugging along but bit of a learning curve for us both.

Bottom line is that we believe we're still on track for Christmas, but it might be close. Neither one of us has done anything like this before so there are a few hurdles that we can see and probably a few we can't. I hope to have it out for formating by mid Dec at the latest. We'll anounce a date shortly, but it will probably be an Ebook release first followed by a hard copy release. Not sure yet.

In the meantime I need to get cracking on a few more scenarios as well.

More to follow...
