Just west of the city of Anking, on the north side of the Yangtze, is the name of the city. The map shows gray roads entering the hex on both the west and east sides. But because of the city name, I can't tell if these roads connect together or if they are separate spurs with forest between them. Does the road go through this hex or not?

Have you tried pressing the "r" key to display roads on the map ?

Stock map shows 2nd class road from Anking west to the hex edge, then 1st class road all the way to Hankow.

I, uh, didn't know you could do this. Mystery solved, thanks!

Stock is indeed what I am playing.
