An entertaining thread has been locked down by the moderators. They said it was reported and to stop posting on it. I can understand that they must investigate complaints, but was the thread read? If the complaints were not justified (as they do not appear to be in this case), then why lock it down? Does this mean that every thread that gets a complaint gets locked down? I have never seen this before here in the SPWaW forums. I have reported AoW threads to no avail, they were not even edited, let alone locked down. I am not causing trouble, but I think this is extremely heavy handed. Thanks.

I know that each Mod has the right to lock down offensive threads or even remove them if they are extremely offensive in nature...and that each Mod will also be different in their view of what is offensive. However I must agree that this one was shut down pretty quick.

I understand that Mods must respond to alerts...and I appreciate the fact that there are Mods out there that care enough to keep things "in line" (AoW has some threads that shouldn't have made it past three posts) at the forums they are assigned to cover. But I think the nature of the thread in question really was more mocking and joking in nature...and if read in context show that most were just people be silly. Maybe that's just me (and Goblin)...I don't know.

Anyway, I understand the decision...just don't 100% agree with it.

Actually, it happened here a couple weeks ago G. In that case I PM'd the moderator, explained why (IMO) I didn't think the closing was necessary, and politely asked him to reopen it so I could continue a discussion that had just started. I got a less-than-friendly reply saying 'no'.

I still don't understand how closing a thread serves any purpose; if the thread contained contained Spam or abusive language, its still there for all to see.

And I see no one here causing trouble. We do all we can to promote Matrix by welcoming new members (customers), answering questions, and spreading the word. Randomly coming in here and whacking one of us on the head is an odd way of saying 'thank you'.:)

I myself have smacked down some things I thought were out of line here at the forums, as you all know. I just don't see this one. There is nothing there we have not bantered back and forth a million times. Maybe a new person was offended somehow? If so, our apologies, and maybe you are in the wrong place? That's how me and the guys (and gals) are, and we enjoy it. I am just very surprised the moderator actually agreed with these people.

I am half tempted to ask everyone here start reading EVERY AoW thread that comes out. I am sure we could report 60% of them (on a good day). They would be legitimate complaints too. Someone would have to say "Whoa, I have to lock all these threads or ease up a bit on the censorship!" It wouldn't be fair to the AoW guys, but rules are rules. They would probably just ban me.

"Exactly. The same could be said of every forum. We're too busy making games and trying to hit deadlines to babysit. However, when things are reported "we" look and make a call. Users reported this thread. "We" looked. "We" recommended it die a quiet death. It didn't..........therefore I will take care of it."

I just read this again...... Its the smallman thing I tell ya!
Oh..and was it really a "we" ??

Ban me too!

Last month I took a walk on the 'bad side of town' (AoW), and got there 10 minutes after a member was booted. Within the hour the moderator thought it over, and reinstated him. I was able to read the offending thread before it was edited, and let's just say it broke all the rules...I would have booted the guy! :)
Keep in mind that the moderators do alot behind the scenes to keep the forums running, and do it on a strictly volunteer basis too. Just look at all the things gmenfan does here daily, and does them so transparently that I often forget that he
is a moderator! :D As a 'thank you' I think we can overlook the occaisional 'bad call'.

to everyone involved (including the Moderator Vic) I think Tracer is right about all of this.

Gmenfan is a terrific moderator and he has come to "know" us sort of speak. He can look at a thread and know that it's just us being...well, us!:D
However, if something got out of hand I have no doubt what so ever that he would warn the people involved probably twice and then close it down on the "third strike".

I don't want to speak for Vic, but I think he saw something that was looking far too much like an AoW thread and chose to stamp out what he perceived to be a "fire" in the making.
I'm not saying that I agree with the quick call (I don't)...but he was responding to a complaint (however "thin" that complaint was will always be open to speculation) and perhaps he saw the move as being one that would keep the SPWAW forum from starting a slide down the slipery slope that put the AoW forum into it's frequent visits to the sinkhole.
After all, don't forget that things got so bad over there not so long ago that there was talk of Matrix closing down the whole AoW Forum rather than deal with the almost daily nonsense.

As for us...yes, I believe we know each other well enough to know when something is a joke and when something has crossed the line. We have all prided ourselves as being one of the best forum role-models around...and rightfully so.
As Goblin stated, we are very good when it comes to telling someone to "step back" when a thread or post gets too personal or crude...and over all, we have done fine "self-moderating" up to now I think.
Sure we are using Matrix's playground to gather on...and they do have the right to moderate it to their own accord...granted. But I agree that we, as a forum, do a lot of good PR for them as well. We answer questions, design new mods, scenarios and what not and have helped build up a strong fan base...and all for the love of the game and the feeling of "community" that Bernie mentioned in a thread earlier today.

Wow...look at my congressional sized speech here! lol

Anyways...what I wanted to say is...we are using their site...we know the rules...we take care of the site pretty **** well...we like to have fun as much as the next forum...we shouldn't have been slapped down as quickly as we were...but we shouldn't hold a grudge. ;) To error is human...or so I was told long ago. :D

how can a Goblin Hunter be willing to "watch a Goblin's Back"? It goes against everything he supposedly stands for.

As for who it is....I have my ideas...but I think it would be safe to remove Bernie from the suspect line up. This isn't his style.

I could tell who Goblin Hunter is.......for a price! :D

Let the bidding start at $1. ;)

BTW, the reason the previous thread was locked and not deleted........because that's me. I don't delete or ban anything (tracer you need to talk to someone higher up the food chain at Matrix with your issue......they are responsible, not moi). The reason I asked to let the thread die is because on one of the complaints a user's son read the thread and started asking questions about some of the "terms" in there.......well, as you can guess that's something Matrix takes pretty seriously especially with the porn spam attacks recently not to mention the two definite hacks of the site. The thread didn't die....therefore I locked it up. Others would have deleted it.

FYI, when a thread or post is reported.....it goes to ALL moderators, administrators and Matrix staff. Those who have time.....look at the reported thread/post. If there is ANY question about it.......most of us TALK about the action BEFORE doing anything. In short, there is a definite "WE" and the overall consensus was to stop the thread since potential children we're involved. However, everyone is different......last week a couple of users complained about another user's signature. I saw no problem with it.......hell, it was funny. Others here at Matrix saw things differently than me and instituted some changes. Balance is what this place has....believe it or not. Now, if you'all excuse me......Squad Assault has a deadline of July.

And if Jess and youse others wanna rumble......goto AOW or NAMB at Wargamer.....we'll tangle (and I'll win). :)

BTW....the only thing that doesn't really fly at AOW is profanity and outright personal attacks.

Hmpf. I must say, that was a tough call. I understand that you have to respond to complaints, but still..... what "terms" in that thread were reason enough to lock it. I for one fail to see it.

Ah well. There's always another day...since it's locked:

Kokoda: Yes, ofcourse you can edit your messages whenever you feel like it. :) It's also a nice way to not up your post count due to a number of "oops" posts. (an "edit" doesn't count on your post meter) :p Except for forgetting the file attachments, that is! :D

Thank you for your answer, Vic, its appreciated. I understand a bit better now, but really do think we should have the same rules as all other forums here. If those two things are all that doesn't fly over there, the same should apply here. A persons son can get into there or here just as easily. Either way, thanks again.

Thanks for the clarification, Vic. As Gob said, it's truly appreciated (although quite unnecessary ;) )

I guess it's a good point to remember that this forum (as opposed to AoW) is a family-oriented forum. All of us should be reminded occassionally of that fact, and behave appropriately.

If you wouldn't make your comment in your grandparent's living room around your children, maybe you should consider rephrasing your comment in the SPWaW forums. (some people's grandparents and children notwithstanding. )

I also considered the moderator's response to be even-handed. The posters were asked to stop, they didn't, the playground was closed. It seems a reasonable response to me.

(and frankly, some of you guys could get a bit more cerebral with your taunts. I know you can do it. :p )
