Tomorrow the Evac TF will arrive to pick-up 35,000 troops and drop off 20,000 supply.

The enemy will throw all his 500 Fighters at this base to smash Japanese Fighter CAP. It won't be there. Pull the CV TF back two hexes to the west and leave CAP at 70%--Range ZERO. DB and TB on 60% ASW at 4,000 Ft and they will continue SS hunting.

Sean will not attack with DB or other bombers (I hope!) so I expect his Sweeps to come in against nothing while we get a free day to load and unload.

Singapore

After a marathon time of 78 days AT SEA with no break, CARDIV1 returns to Singapore. We always talk about System Damage and just wear-and-tear on warships so I thought I should Post a screenshot of what the TF looks like before it disbands for some R&R.

During this time period, the CVs SANK CV Ranger and 3 CVLs, conducted numerous strikes against shipping and provided CAP/LRCAP over relief forces and the final evacuation TF that successfully lifted off 40,000 men.

CV Amagi took a TT during that time.

Here is what they look like:

Damned but it has been interesting in this match. We are about to close out May and I plan to do a comprehensive review of May's action (Ceylon and the Coral Sea).

The Kaigun is assembling and preparing for action. Repairs are nearly done (14 Days til I get Hiryu, Soryu, Akagi, and Kaga out of the docks) and we shall then seek our 'Decisive Battle' for the war. If opportunity presents itself prior to that, we shall try to take it.

Am home today as we prepare to host our church's congregation for a Sunday afternoon BBQ. Hope that Sean can do 1 or 2 more. Would really like to get to the point I've got the FULL POWER of the Fleet ready and set to go!

I opt FOR explosives!

Never have deployed a TF for such a LONG TIME. Amazed me the LACK of of damage the ships accrued over that time.

A sharp DD action occurs just off Lae where 4 DD of Japan take on 3 American. The action opens at 1,000 Yds and both sides score with TTs on the opening round. Japan loses one and USA loses one.

DAWN

The cure for curious American DDs is MISS JUDY. With no protective CAP, a wave of 7 Fighters and 9 Nells miss the Americans. The second wave comes in the form of 3 Fighters and 30 Judy. DD Nicholas takes 2 500Kg bombs and sinks. DD Philip takes SIX 500Kg bombs and blows apart.

Total: 1 Japanese DD for 3 American.

The difference between a loss and a victory is often settled by whether or not cripples make it home or sink. The battles around Ceylon produced three Japanese cripples: BB Ise (Diego Garcia), BC Kirishima (Singapore), and CB Okuhotaka (Diego Garcia).

All three ships limped into Diego Garcia without interference. Kirishima did emergency repairs and just made Singapore today. The CB just repaired enough to begin its voyage home from DG. If given 12-14 more days, Ise should be able to make her way home.

My opponent knows that these ships limped back to this valuable base and it has amazed me that no attempts have been made to finish off these valuable cripples.

Here is Kirishima after three weeks of repairs at Diego. Have lots of supply and an AR at the base:

Someone likes the Lily DB for anti-fletcher work but Judys have a bigger boom.

A guy told me that in Korea they used hand grenades, 1/4 pound of tnt and enough fish for a week for the company . . .

Around here, 1/4 stick of dynamite, aka DuPont Spinner, aka Finnish Firecracker because some of those with that ancestry used it . . .

June 1, 1943

We're in June!

Totaled the VP changes for the month of May:

Japan
June 1 45,116
May 1 44,254

VP Gain of 862 for the month.

Allies
June 1 28,618
May 1 26,201

VP Gain of 2,417.

The good news is that Japan continued to gain VP. Bad news, the Allies gained theirs at TRIPLE the rate.

The Americans send in a group of BBs to hit Lae. They don't quite make their destination and get the attention of several Judy DB groups in the area. Though the BBs are LRCAP'd by 30 or so Fighters, the DB do fight their way through and score hits on BB Colorado as well as New Mexico. Love those 500Kg bombs that penetrate the deck armor!

Jeepers - you repeated that DB attack of the Colorado and New Mexico 3 times. You must really-really like those 500 Kg SAPs.

Horn Isle

The enemy has left Horn Isle alone for over a week. During that time, I took a risk and set all my George's to 100% rest. The SR on these planes is terrible so it helped the pilots recover as well as get aircraft repaired. After five days I moved them back into CAP and today the enemy came at the Island with six Sweeps.

Waves
16 Corsair, 14 Spits, 13 Spits, 14 Spits, 17 P-40E, and 19 P-38

They were met by 42 George (20,000Ft) and 24 Jack (15,000Ft).

It was fun to watch:

I think that is why when the defender has high SR defensive fighters that the key is to keep attacking with sweeps, then bomb/bombard the airfields.

Coral Sea Battles

The battle rages throughout the Coral Sea:

Horn Island
The Japanese send three groups of 4 DD towards Portland Roads to intercept the HORDES (and I DO mean INSANE hordes) of PT-Boats. The Japs lose a DD in exchange for sinking five PTs and keeping the 48 or 60 PTs (literally--4-5 groups of 12 PTs) from bothering the TFs at Horn.

Japanese CAP blasts a P-400 and P-38 Squadron that flies up to challenge the 150 Fighters on CAP.

Port Moresby
A Bombardment TF of 2 CA, 3 CL, and 2 DD runs smack dab into a Landing Force and in a solid performance sinks THREE big LCI(L) AP conversions. Three more APs are solidly hit before the TF conducts its mission and hits the PM airfield destroying 4 planes, damaging 63, and smacking the AF and Port.

Lae
A small STF of CL Yahagi and 2 DD intercept a CTF of CV Enterprise, Hornet, and CVL Charlotte. The Japs hits all three carriers with 1-2 hits and then high-tail it towards Hollandia. An Aussie Brigade is landed to see what the Japanese have at Lae. Am certain that much more is about to unload.

During the day, Rabaul's air attacks the DAMNED WRONG TARGET at Lae instead of the TFs at Torokina. Stupid. A large Daitai of Judy and Jills are each destroyed by a CAP of 397 Fighters. Lose 100+ planes due to stupidity.

Torokina
The Japanese, as hoped, find the enemy landing at Torokina on Bougainville. Weather holds off morning attacks but the Japanese Carriers--so long denied an opportunity in the Pacific--swing into action in the afternoon and launch a massed strike of 155 Zero and 130 TB. The enemy has CVE's for defense and their 57 F4F are swept aside by the Japanese Sea Eagles. No Kate or Jill are shot down in ATA. They attack. The Jills carry TTs and the Kates have bombs. Range was 8 for the strike. Results are pretty fair:

CVE
Chenango is sunk with 1 B and 6 TT hits
Suwanee might be sunk with 6 Bombs and 2 TTs
Long Island is crushed under 1 Bomb and 3 TT

CA
Salt Lake City and Astoria each take a TT

Merchants
3 APA and 3 AK are hit inflicting casualties with their troops on board.

Air losses are high due to absolute stupidity of the Rabaul forces striking at Lae instead of Torokina. Total losses are 170 Japanese Planes to 120 Allied.

Tomorrow you ask?

The Japanese CVs will continue to use the Solomons as a barrier and move slightly SE at a range of 7 for Strikes and, hopefully, staying out of Allied attack range. The Weight of Japanese DB will be added as well as 60+ Fighters and DB at Buin. Another CV joins the Japanese CTF adding 72 more aircraft as well.

Horn will continue to unload supplies and be an annoyance to the enemy.

Got a PM asking about my next group of Fighters I'm trying to get in. Thought I would answer that.

The Mod allows for the creation of a CV-Based Jack and George variant. The ZERO airframe ends with the M5. Yamamoto does not allow for ZERO's creator to divide his time between the late-models of the ZERO AND the creation of the JACK. Kawanishi is encouraged to develop its EORGE as a competitive choice to the JACK. In earlier versions of the Mod these aircraft were allowed to come in too early. That has been fixed with this version.

The JACK (J2M3a) comes in 7/44 and the GEORGE (N1K2-A) appears in 10/44. Any good Japanese player can advance airframes so I am trying to do my utmost to see what can be done. Here are my current Naval Research stats for the two aircraft:

JACK J2M3a SR-3 advanced to 4/44 with 69 repaired factories out of 170 researching. Eight Factories involved.
GEORGE N1K2-A advanced to 6/44 with 126 of 130 factories repaired. Five Factories researching and all but one is complete.

For some reason the GEORGE factories repaired much faster then the JACKs. Very weird. I should have GEORGE by November-December 1943. JACK is more dicey but I would guess December 1943.

Self-Imposed House Rule: The GEORGE is a big-assed plane. I ruling it out for CVLs and CVEs. This plane can only be used on the Fleet CVs while the JACK can be used on anything.

On the Army side, we are nearly all in on FRANK. Since my Army Fighter units have hardly been attrited for the last six months, I have produced a stockpile of 1200 Tojo. With that large number, I have shut off production of the Tojo and switched out three Factories to FRANK. Have two factories of 40 producing Tony at the moment. Like that armor!

IJA Research:
FRANK The plane has advanced from 4/44 to 1/44 with eight factories researching and having 162 repaired of 228 possible. There are four factories fully repaired with 115 planes between them. FRANK is moving up fast. Best guess would be August--September 43 for this bad-ass plane. LOVE FRANK!

This is ALL the damage done in the exchange of strikes today:

CV Kaimon takes 2 Bombs
CV Taikaku takes a TT
CV Shokaku takes a Bomb
CVL Ryukaku takes a Bomb

I moved them into a single TF so you could see the damage inflicted.
