@BBfanboy: You identified the reason for the tendency of his ships to develop heavy fires correctly, it is the fuel load. I think I mentioned earlier in this thread that I think my opponent does not use the do not load fuel button in his amphib TFs and pays the price for that. The again, maybe he wanted to have some fuel at hand.

That is an anomaly about the "do not load fuel" order. It will prevent loading of fuel in the dry cargo spaces (in drums), but if the ship has that extra tank for carrying fuel or oil the game engine considers it part of the planned "cargo" load and will load fuel every time. BTW, a cargo TF can include tankers so maybe the issue is with the definition of cargo including non-drummed fuel.
The allies also have a few xAKs that have the small fuel storage space (usually about 200 tons), so try to exclude them from your troop carrying TFs, (or at least load them separately with only cargo and then merge them).

If I do click it, using one of C2 class ships (200 fuel capacity) in an amphib TF, I get the picture shown below.
No fuel loaded on the C2 ship.

Note - I use the C2 ships very carefully if at all, they have a very attractive conversion available.

Personally, based mainly on experience with the last official patch or the beta equivalent thereof (none of which is used in this game) my impression is that I can reliably prevent those fuel burning message by using this switch.

Getlemen,

I did not find a turn in my mailbox this morning, so I find a bit of time to let you know what to expect next if my guess is correct.

First of all, situation around New Caledonia/the New Hebrides will stay interesting, see below. Enemy brought KB back (sitting in the hex row below Efate, and I do not know for sure yet what the other two TFs near Efate are. I had indications that Yamashiro may be in the area, so it could be a SCTF trying to shut down Luganville or, of course an invasion of Efate or Luganville.

In any case, air support in this region is currently relying on KB 100%, closest airfield controlled by enemy is Lunga/Tulagi. This is a problem for IJ in this theater, and I hope I will be able to continue to use it to my advantage. Depending on how bad damage to his support ships is (and how many of them beyond the ones I hit are available, but I do not have any indication there are any more), he may also find that replenishing his SCTFs with ammo / escorts with depth charges turns out to be more difficult than envisioned. Also, I am not sure IJ has a lot of supply available on New Caledonia, but we will see.

Also, enemy is moving in the DEI. Quite an interesting TF in the van, looks like a fighter-heavy CV to provide air cover against the dive bombers I have in the area and which IJ knows about. So maybe now the Ambon invasion that was envisioned by some of you earlier will come.

You see that it is likely that the next turns will stay interesting, so stay tuned

Thanks for your interest

Anticipation

Change of work schedule for my opponent in real life...

Also, the one turn which he sent back since that was not that eventful. He seems poised for Ambon and the TF near Efate/Luganville turned out to be a bombardment TF that hit Luganville with considerable impact - I lost a bunch of planes.

Night Naval bombardment of Luganville at 120,150 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
P-39D Airacobra: 52 damaged
P-39D Airacobra: 4 destroyed on ground
PBY-5 Catalina: 15 damaged
PBY-5 Catalina: 2 destroyed on ground
F4F-3 Wildcat: 5 damaged
B-24D Liberator: 10 damaged
F-4 Lightning: 1 damaged

11 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Japanese Ships
BB Ise
BB Yamashiro
BB Fuso
CA Mikuma
CA Haguro

Allied ground losses:
160 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 7 destroyed, 7 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 6 (2 destroyed, 4 disabled)

Airbase hits 13
Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 30
Port hits 1

BB Ise firing at Luganville
BB Yamashiro firing at Luganville
2nd Marine Defense Battalion firing at BB Fuso
BB Fuso firing at 2nd Marine Defense Battalion
CA Mikuma firing at 2nd Marine Defense Battalion
2nd Marine Defense Battalion firing at CA Mikuma
CA Haguro firing at Luganville

That means he brought 5 of his BBs on top of any Kongo class escorting KB to that theatre.

Next turn may become more interesting, though.

Gentlemen,

it turns out that my opponent likes taking Namlea first as well. I had assumed that would not be the case, so my evil plans don't work. Oh well.

This is what he brought to Namlea (which will, of course, fall quickly)

Ground combat at Namlea (76,108)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 324 troops, 2 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 18

Defending force 3790 troops, 79 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 64

Assaulting units:
SE Borneo KNIL Bn /1
Samarinda Base Force

Defending units:
II/19th Naval Guard Unit
III/19th Naval Guard Unit
I/19th Naval Guard Unit
14th Nav Gd /1

48th Road Const Co
B./50th JNAF Coy
23rd Field AA Machinecannon Company
24th Port Unit
41st Field AA Battalion
C./50th JNAF Coy

In other news, he tries to do another bombardment of Luganville, hoping to kill more AC. But this turns mostly into a battle between my CD guns and his DDs. Results are not really worth the fuel spent for him, I think, even if my guns hardly hit a thing.

Night Naval bombardment of Luganville at 120,150 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

Unfortunately though the bombardments of the last two days at Luganville disrupted my search arrays just when I need them. Last known position of KB was 4 hex east of Efate. This turn, it disappeared from my view. Which is unpleasant, I would have loved having this piece of information. The main reason is that I am trying to dilute enemy focus by some activity in the region of the Gilberts. During the last two turns, Tabiteua expanded port and airfield, respectively, after my sneaking in men and material for a while. To create a more urgent feeling of necessity to intervene, I sent Marine Raiders to try and take Ocean island and Nauru island. They were not well prepped and my (scarce, because I had not wanted to show my presence at Tabituea too early) recon evidently was not good enough at Nauru, where I found a garrison and failed. But I took Ocean Island.

Amphibious Assault at Nauru Island (127,128)

Gentlemen,

well... I gambled and lost.

KB was in position to move in and go after my Ocean Island invasion support immediately. What is worse is that it moved more to the east and less to the north (or started from a more eastern and less northern position than I had expeceted) and thus caught a retiring SCTF with 2 good US CLs and 2 destroyers on top of a bunch of small fry merchant shipping. A field day for KB.

I lost about 120 points worth of shipping and expect losing half of that on top of the losses accumulated so far tomorrow. The only positive aspect is that KB lost 32 A6M2 in the process to CAP from Tabiteua, but those fighters valiantly sacrificed themselves to protect the strike planes, which remained unharmed.

Conversely, enemy dodged successfully my attempt to achieve a surface intercept at Namlea and used the remaining ammo on his Mutsu SCTF to hit Luganville once more. No huge plane losses, but airstrip and planes are badly damaged.

I am curious, if you had the opportunity to make the same gamble again - would you ? That's the parameter I use to evaluate myself in circumstances such as you describe. Was it a reasonable gamble that experienced poor luck? Or just a bad decision in the first place?

I am curious, if you had the opportunity to make the same gamble again - would you ? That's the parameter I use to evaluate myself in circumstances such as you describe. Was it a reasonable gamble that experienced poor luck? Or just a bad decision in the first place?

I am not done with my evaluation of myself . But I can say this:

First of all, I am not going to blame bad luck. It's all my fault and my very own incompetence

Next, I'm fine with most of what I lost/will lose apart from the SCTF. Those were pieces on the board I was willing to sacrifice. After all, I intentionally displayed interest in the region to get a reaction - and got one, just quicker than expected. If this influences enemy focus and enemy actions, all is well.

Also, I did not really feel I had much of a choice at the beginning of last turn (which may be due to a lack of creativity). As a matter of fact, had I reversed course (the SCTF did), I probably would have taken similar losses. I gave a go to the operation when KB seemed to be retiring from the region, several turns ago. I was not worried when it appeared back, not even when it ventured to the east of efate. If I had stopped the operation then, maybe I could have avoided the losses, but the message I sent would not have been sent either. I was getting worried when my search was shut down by the first Luganville bombardment, which left only two PBYs out of 24 at the base operational. But at that point of time, my feeling was that I could only move on.

thanks for the in-depth response.

I'm always glad if someone asks something

Speaking about questions, I've got three for you:

1) Can someone enlighten me how to interprete the device stats for radar devices properly? Let's take a completely arbitrary example - CXAM vs SC radar. Is SC something worth getting?

2) Sub warfare. What is better - ending in the same hex in the same move (trigger like surface battle), being in the hex the TF ends on with the sub already in it or having a sub in the hex the TF is passing through?

3) I think I recall some parameters re. AAA changed between last official patch and latest patch to be downloaded from members area. Can you comment on these and the altitude up to which IJ AAA in 42 is effective?

Thanks in advance

Other than that, a brief update from the war (2 more turns played), we are about to enter June 42:

a) the good news is that I got reasonable (i.e. not just tiny) fragments of all units earmarked for Ocean Island to the base. I think a single NavGd won't be able to do the job. Of course, supply may turn into a problem quickly.

b) the bad news is that the carnage in shipping in Tabiteua region continued, but that was mostly expected even though I lose about 20 ship points more than expected. Still, it should be over now.

c) the different news is I am still trying to dilute IJ concentration. Do you think this will help ?

Ground combat at Paramushiro-jima (137,47)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 1468 troops, 24 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 47

Defending force 110 troops, 1 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 12

Assaulting units:
Kitachishima Fortress
10th JNAF AF Unit

Defending units:
34th Combat Engr Rgt /1

Thanks for your interest

1. Radars are both hard to understand and simple to decide on. In the database, the radars have parameters like range and "penetration" that might lead you to believe more is better. Some of the ranges in thousands of yards would mean detection into adjoining hexes, but Alfred stated that radar detection is only within its own hex. Higher range means somewhat higher probability of detection further out, but multiple radars are more significant than one really long-ranged one.
As for the penetration parameter, I don't recall that being discussed but I figure it is about being able to detect through heavy cloud or even rain.
As for the simple part, if the game offers you a radar upgrade, take it. It is based on historic improvements and the AI calculating detection will no doubt like the newer radar.

2. In my experience, subs ending their movement in the same hex as their victim, or sitting there when the victim comes, have a much better chance of detecting and attacking - at least twice as good.

3. Just open the editor and look at the stats for Japanese AA guns. As a rule of thumb I fly at 3K when the Japanese have only 7.7mm MGs, 4K if they have 13.2mm MGs, 6K to 8K for AA machine-cannons and about 15K if they have 75mm or larger AA guns. Some of their guns can reach higher than you can fly, or so high that if you go above that, your bombs will surely miss. At some point you must accept some risk to get some result.

I also take into consideration the weather over target (if I have a DL on it) so I will come in lower when in rainy or overcast conditions.

BTW, Alfred mentioned that the ceilings for AA weapons are "squishy", meaning there is a chance of a few shells going higher and some not reaching as high as the stated ceiling. Take it as an average max height.

Thanks for your input.

Can you or anyone else comment on eventual changes to AAA in the beta patching process? Can I still rely on my experience with the last official patch (stock), or do I have to adjust?

And are there any opinions about possible differentiation between the two "good" options?

I am asking because I used to apply the "end movement" approach, but think that other players seem to be more successful in the sub war than I tend to be. Before you point at choosing appropriate commanders, that I do (as far as PPs are available and in a sequential process).

OK, to expand on this a little - if your sub is on a moving patrol it has more chance of running into an enemy TF. The way I reconcile the two approaches is that if you have no detection on any enemy TFs, set up a roving patrol to try find them, but if you have spotted one and have a good idea where it is going, try to set up the lurking ambush.

The other reason to keep subs moving is enemy detection of your subs. If your subs are getting a DL on them, the enemy will avoid them (even if in the same hex) and may send forces to attack them. Departing the area for at least three days seems to reset the odds the sub will remain hidden long enough to attack.

As with bombing, you may have to accept some risk to go after a juicy target.

I guess it has to do with the concern not to be able to do what still needs to be done to achieve the autovictory I think my opponent was shooting for, but will try to provide more information.

Thanks for your interest

Wow - nice ambush and a heavy blow for your opponent! Was NY59Giants still playing the IJ side?
May 30/42 is pretty late for Japan to be attacking Ambon, probably because of the troops and time devoted to that invasion of the NW USA early in the game. Still, it should have had coverage by BBs and Carriers.

Thanks for bringing the action to us in your AAR!
