[UPDATE: THIS BETA VERSION IS NOW DEPRECATED - THE LIVE VERSIONS ARE NEWER THAN THIS].

There is a beta update available in the members area for registered users.

http://www.matrixgames.com/members/privateDL.asp?gid=386

This is an update which should improve compatibility with modern versions of Windows, including Windows 10. A full change list is below.

Please note that this is a beta version and we are hoping for feedback from the community on its features and performance.

This version will not work on machines which have not previously run the current release version. This is by design for this beta release.

If the HTTP link in the members area does not work for you then the FTP link should work correctly. Apologies for any confusion.

Change List
+ Fixed working folder lock-in.
+ Runs in 32bit to work correctly on Windows 10.
+ Moved options from registry so does not need admin permissions to run.
[Options are now in a file in My Documents/My Games/CloseCombatLastStandArnhem]
+ Smoothed out key scrolling and added WASD.
+ UI scaling in battle (needs restart).
+ Option to obey DPI or not (needs restart).
+ Can lock mouse (requires restart or tab in/out to activate).
+ Can scale frontend UI.
+ Hopefully should feel more responsive in UI.
+ Fixed a crash bug that could cause a crash on battle exit.

Known issues are:
+ Frontend scaling isn’t pretty because it’s too large to go 2x on a 1980x1080 screen (from 800x600) so it is 1.5x so you don’t get clean pixels.
+ Windowed setting is ignored, currently always runs in a window, even if frameless. Not sure if we should keep it like this to get it to behave better with other apps.
+ It should run on XP (I dynamically link to the DPI stuff which requires Vista or better) but I can’t test that.

Thank you in advance for your feedback

Cheers

Pip

This is a surprise!

Glad to see that compatibility with Windows 10 and larger screens is being improved (UI changes).

Good to see a crash bug is being fixed.

Since this is still beta will any of other bugs listed here be dealt with; http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3716292

While the primary focus was compatibility, I have looked through the thread during the work and attempted to replicate the crashes but was not able to. If you can repeat with the beta update then it might be useful to give exact button presses and actions in case we are missing something.

Cheers

If you follow the links there is more detail for each bug.

On some of those linked threads Steve even acknowledged the issue???
- BG's not returning Post #: 37 http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3716292&mpage=2
- Reserve BG Not Adding Any Units to Frontline BG Post #: 8 http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3283786

On others how to test seems clear;
- Battlegroup Screen buttons "Edit Opponent" and "Return to player" do not lighten when hovered over
- Campaign/Operation results not saved after last battle
- Night turns skipped if Germans have only static BG's

For the crash bugs there is many reports of them occurring but people couldn't get the game to crash consistently.

I'll think about testing but to be honest the LSA Outstanding Bugs thread is almost 4 years old. People cared, documented and tested things then and nothing happened so I'm not sure if I or they care to anymore....

LSA in my opinion is probably the best Close Combat game and I still occasionally play it (or TLD since it has more mods).

Thus getting a patch that will allow for me to keep playing it on Windows 10 or when I get a higher resolution monitor (4K) would be good so I'll test a bit.

Change List
+ Moved Options from Registry to File - file was created
+ Smoothed Out Screen Scrolling - it is smoother
+ UI scaling in battle - works and for very high resolution monitors (>1980x1024) it will help people play/see.
+ Obey DPI - didn't test as I leave DPI at default
+ Lock Mouse - didn't test
+ Scale Frontend UI - works at 1.5* but is fuzzy as stated. Better than nothing for anyone with a very high resolution monitor (4k).
+ Responsive UI - seems good though I didn't have an issue before
+ Crash Bug - No idea how to recreate the problem to test

Known Issues
+ Frontend Scaling Not Pretty - agreed! It's due to having to use 1.5* instead of 2*. Why the heck is 1024x768 used instead of 800x600 for the frontend screens when the extra space is all black/unused in WAR/TLD/LSA???
+ Windows Setting Ignored - not running seamless when at the desktop resolution is a step backwards in immersion
+ XP - didn't test

Note: If you uninstall the beta it will uninstall LSA. Even worse it doesn’t do a complete uninstall leaving the start menu shortcuts and Documents/MyGames/CloseCombatLastStandArnhem directory and the file Options.txt in it.

The front end is designed at 800x600 which will not double to 1080p, which is why we had to go with a fractional scaling. The 1024x768 stuff it used to do no longer happens.

I don't understand the second issue. If you set the resolution to the desktop rez and disable framed window it will run the game in a fullscreen window.

Cheers

Pip

Why is 1080P a constraint or target resolution? My monitor is 1980x1200 thus 800x600 * 2 fits fine (in fact the Atomic original games that ran full screen were *2 by default due to my monitor/video card settings). 2* or higher would work for anyone with a 4K monitor/TV why not check the screen resolution to determine the highest multiplier (1.5, 2.0, 3.0, etc. with an option for whole numbers only) that would work?

For the window frame you said the Window Setting was ignored so I left at default and if there is a frame on/off option I missed it.

1080p is the most common screen resolution by a wide margin. Every variable in the scaling would increase the amount of testing required, which is a lot given the highly hard-coded nature of the codebase.

Cheers

1080P is the most common today no doubt but it would be short sighted to do the bare minimum.

As buyers upgrade their PC's they will be stuck with UI at 1.5* getting smaller and it not being pretty....

nice to see some upgrades to LSA. as Tejszd said...LSA is the best CC game, with all its options etc. too bad it hardly got modded....I think the GJS mod for LSA is the only mod?....me and David SS / crewman did that one...a great mod IMO....and LSA is still being played by some of us...im playing a GC right now with MarineSku. it would be nice to get the known issues in Tejszd's list fixed....

Hi,

I just bought the Steam version of the game, how can I download this Beta patch? Because I do not get a CD key I think via Steam?

Many thanks!

Both the Steam version and the latest update are newer than this beta version. I will edit the main post to make this clear.

Cheers

Yes,the scaling UI was needed.

With higher screen resolutions and I guess my eyes getting older it was getting harder to play CC.

Wish the other CC games would get the update and for Matrix to tweak the update by offering more scaling options instead of just 1.5x.

800x600 * 1.5 = 1200x900 this works good for 1080p 1920x1080 HD
800x600 * 2.0 = 1600x1200 this would work for 1920x1200, 2560x1440 QHD or higher monitors
800x600 * 3.0 = 2400x1800 this would work for 1440p 3840x2160 UHD or 4K 2160p 7680×4320
