Originally posted by Capitaine I knew your "double duty" angle was there somewhere, soapy. Just glad actually to see it. Disagree w/ your a, b, c analysis -- namely (a) -- b/c it's not necessary under the rules, and YOU DON'T need "extra" rules to compensate. But THAT is why I see you are so worked up about actually defining the "field" in the term "field force". A method to your madness, as it were. Actually makes the cossack/freikorps B.S. moves illusory as they always were. W/o that problem, your "double duty" position becomes all the weaker. ;)
(a) involves no extra rules... thats the point. In this case you must make an assumption; the same assumption you have made: i.e. the area intrinsically includes the city. The movement rules only cover movement in areas, with some stuff about cities tacked on as an afterthought. To argue in favour of the seperate and distinct "field" region is to argue something which there are no rules for; The movement rules at no point require me to move anywhere other than "areas"... there is no rule telling me that once I am in an area I must decide to move into the "field" or the "city", no rule requireing the specific placement o my corps in an area to designate such a choice, and so on... so defining a seperate region called "field" in an area actually involves a whole pile of assumptions. It would be much easier, if you are anti-double-duty, to say that cities are entirely seperate from areas, as gdpsnake has contended. All you have to do then is assume 7.3.4 allows movement into cities and everything works fine with no further wierdness. Does this allow the cossack thing? Yes. Is that a problem? No not really. It's annoying to me becuase I think it would be a silly thing to have happen, but then I think a full Feudal corps not being allowed to control Benghazi because they can't "fit" is JUST AS silly, or a corps in an area NOT manning the guns or otherwise occupying/controlling the city/port equally so. Further... gdpsnake's questions that were answered by Harry Rowland would seem to indicate that in fact that is the way of things: cities are totally seperate from areas, cossacks can do their nonsense, and corps that don't "fit" into cities are not permitted to control/occupy them at all. Well what can I do? I stand by my way of playing, even though it has been relegated to "house rule" status, since it eliminates the annoying problems above, and it's simpler and faster. I prefer the more elegant solution, whenever possible, and I know plenty of people agree with me. Oh yes... you keep mentioning the cossack thing as being the reason why I need double-duty... well it really isn't, since nobody in our groups has ever thought such a thing was possible anyway. We have always used it really to eliminate the silliness of corps not being able to "fit" in cities and therefore be unable to control them, and to avoid having to deal with minutiae with regards to how exactly you place your counters in an area... But now we are getting back into the double-duty thing which has been done to death. My apologies for causing it to rear it's old and ugly head :D :D :D
