Hi,

This will be using DaBabes Lite A scen 26 with unit data modifications. And AndyMac's updated AI files. Should be more interesting to see what Artificial Idiot does this time. I need to revise my strategies a bit, since I have not played against these updated AI files.

DaBabes Lite explained:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2436531

Babes Lite:
Class and Ship (wpc, wps) files modified extensively, but no impact to AI play.
Device file (wpd) modified somewhat to make things smoother, easier to play with, no impact on AI play.
Airgroups file (wpg) is as stock, but with some fixes, no impact to AI play.
Locations file is as stock, no impact to AI play.

Thanks for the interest, if there is any!

Directly from previous campaign thread:

This AAR is meant to ease the new AE players into playing AE Grand Campaign vs IJ AI as Allies.

1. DON'T PANIC! Game is immense, but you do not have to consume it all right away. Like family-size pizza, you can take it slice by slice. I enjoy playing against AI Japanese, trying different strategies and discovering new historical things about Pacific War. Generally, my first turn as Allies in AE used to take 4+ hrs to input orders (and I have played WitP since 2004), now it's about 1.5-2hrs. Remember, as Allies, you do not have to do everything during first turn. It is still daunting task, but also rewarding.

2. HAVE FUN! Remember you are playing against AI, it's feelings will not get hurt if you realize you made big mistake and you want to re-do last turn. After you have mastered some of the basics, it is good to restrain yourself from "cheating", but when learning, it is OK. Just try not to replay a turn where your losses where from bad luck, not from bad orders (like having your CV sunk by IJN SS would be bad luck (if you had planes on Naval Search...) etc.).

3. DON'T GET INTO BAD HABITS! Sooner or later you want to play PBEM and lot of the small tricks you learn against AI will no longer work. Your opponent may be an idiot, but not an Artificial Idiot! Also, do not "game the engine". There are some exploits, that will give you extra edge vs AI. Don't do it.

Game will be:

Allied vs. IJ AI

AI Difficulty: Historical (to avoid supply & combat benefits for AI)
Facilities to expand: OFF (you want to turn on this base by base, not have it suck your supplies immediately, especially in China)
Automatic Upgrade: ON
Replacements: OFF
2-day turns (gives AI some more edge and slows down operations while speeding the game up)
Historical First turn: OFF (because of 2-day turns, I want to be able to input some orders during first turn)
Fog of War: ON
Advance Weather: ON
Allied Damage Control: ON
Player Defined Upgrades: ON
December 7th surprise: ON
Reliable USN Torpedoes: OFF
Realistic R&D: ON
No unit withdrawals: OFF
Reinforcements: FIXED

TO BE CONTINUED!

BEFORE DOING ANY ORDERS, ASSESS THE STRATEGIC SITUATION:

On this map, there are outer limits of maximum theoretical allowed Japanese expansion in BLUE. On your side of that line are areas that you SHOULD DEFEND AND KEEP. You should of course fight for bases outside these absolute limits, but not to death. Of course, some bases like Efate and Luganville in South Pacific may be difficult to reinforce in early game and may fall to Japanese even when passing the BLUE limit.

In RED are places you should start reinforcing IMMEDIATELY or as soon as you have troops available. You will have quite limited troops available in Dec 41, so you need to prioritize.

In GREEN are your major Troop, Supply and Fuel Transportation routes. It's not coincidence that they are close to BLUE and RED areas, you need to keep your supply routes open.

BLACK of the intended fuel supply routes to Australia. Australia makes LOT of supply when given enough fuel. AS ALLIES, THERE IS NO NEED TO SHIP OIL. Previously I used Suva as fuel storage, but sudden KB (Kido Butai aka IJN main CV TF) raid can cost you lot of tankers. And with new AI files...not taking any risks, especially in fear that AI might actually invade Suva. It was a plan that had support of many in IJN (well explained in book Shattered Sword) instead of Midway operation.

YELLOW are lines I intend to keep to make life easier when 1943 comes. So, I will fight for Darwin and Port Moresby. AI will definitely go after PM. I will also try to keep Rangoon, to have Burma Road open, that extra supply to China is critical. So, I will re-route reinforcements going to Singapore to Rangoon.

Other BBs etc. are not in much better shape... Every BB got hit badly, they are going to need to reduce flooding and then sent to West Coast shipyards. I want to reserve PH dry-dock for battle repairs, not long term "reconstruction".

Some immediate action needed:

- ASW effort to get rid of IJN sub menace around PH
- evacuating Rabaul forces to Port Moresby
- moving 2 AUS brigades (8th AUS Div) to Singapore for evacuation, they will join rest of the unit in Port Moresby.
- moving 5 AUS Div components to Sydney, they will be combined there and bought out of restriction when political points allow. Will be most likely joining 8th AUS Div in PM
-moving north Australia base forces all to Darwin. It'll be later used as main submarine base for operations in DEI.
- rerouting Singapore reinforcements to Burma
- consolidating all Malaya forces to Johore Bahru and Singapore (minus 8th AUS Div, that will be evacuated)
- consolidating Sumatra units to Palembang
- bringing more supply to Singapore
- consolidating surface combat forces to Soerabaja, even Force Z seems to survive, without bad luck.

MORE TO FOLLOW

These are tactical needs. Tell us what you do with the command HQs you have available? Do you prep them for any specific locations for combat bonuses? Do you pair them with any corps HQ? Do you plan to move them places? The brass don't get much love in this game.

Mostly the Command HQs are too far to influence battles. I'd love to move e.g. Eastern Command from Karachi to Rangoon, but that HQ is static.

Notable exception is ABDA with it's subordinate Army HQ (Malaya Army). Both are preparing for Singapore and since ABDA in Batavia has command radius of 9, Malaya Army HQ is comfortably within 2x command radius. That should give nice bonus for land battle.

I don't have many HQs yet, but they'll come in time.

Things adjusted.

- evacuation of fuel from Sumatra and Java to Australia. Will keep tat up as long as I can.
- base constructions started where applicable, same with fortifications
- air units altitudes, missions and mission % adjusted
- trying to move one ARD (floating dry dock) from Java to Darwin, that'll be very valuable when lot of submarines are based there. Reduces need to send SS to Brisbane dry dock.
- preparing to evacuate 8th AUS Div, TFs sent to Singapore for that
- preparing to evacuate Rabaul (TF sent)
- sent fuel and supplies to Darwin and Port Moresby
- lot of TK (tankers) sent to Auckland in preparation for it to be SW Pacific fuel hub
. consolidating ground units just north of Moulmein, preparing to make the stand there, Pegu and Rangoon
- Malaya forces are conducting withdrawal to Johore Bahru and Singapore. They don't stand a chance if not consolidated. All are preparing for Singapore plus then all would be within command radius of Malaya Army HQ
- considering to replace Percival with more savvy commander...but then I have to switch back before Malaya falls. Replacing him costs 150 political points and I have right now 151...
- surface combat forces in Philippines and DEI are gathering in Soerabaja.
- 4 DD TF has been sent from Manila to north to interdict the invasion landings
- all submarines in DEI and Philippines have been deployed.
- West Coast SS sent to Pearl Harbor

LOGISTICS and GENERAL STRATEGY notes:

India/Burma: Karachi will have continuous fuel supply from Abadan. That way India will soon have massive supply and fuel surplus. Bombay will be the base where reinforcements from Aden, Mombasa and Cape Town will be sent. From there they'll do Strategic move to Imphal.. After that they just to have wade a bit through jungle to reach Burma. Madras has been set up with Continuous Supply (CS) convoys to Rangoon. They will bring back fuel, since Rangoon has lot of it.

China: Not much there. Set some bases to fortify, couple to expand and adjusted air unit missions and percentages. They are mostly training now.

HINT: don't change the preparation target of Chinese unit until it has reached exp 45. When preparation reaches 100, unit starts to slowly gain experiance to national max, in Chinese case that is 45. You will have lot of units in exp 30-40 and very low morale. Both are very important in combat.

Malaya: Pulling back to Johore Bahru and Singapore. All units prepare for Singapore, as do Malaya Army HQ and ABDA. Extra supply will be sent to prolong the resistance. Still on two minds about replacing Percival. Maybe after 2nd 2-day turn.

Sumatra: All units are marching to Palembang. I plan to keep it as long as I can..which unfortunately is usually not long. But I try to evacuate all fuel possible to Australia.

Java: Surface combat ships, air units and submarines concentrate to Soerabaja. That and Batavia will be main places of resistance. Trying to get few ARDs (floating dry dock) salvaged, one is already set on it's way to Darwin. It doesn't have fuel, so it has to be in TF with ships. Consider it been towed, speed 5 knts.

Australia: Darwin will be future submarine base for operations in DEI. All northern base forces are sent there. It'll also get more AS and even AR in future, plus hopefully that ARD makes it. Fuel will be shipped from Cape Town to Perth when surplus is available. Perth will in future supply Darwin with small 1-2 ship TFs hugging coast, very difficult to detect and intercept. Sydney will be supply hub for SW Pacific and SoPacific in future.

Papua New Guinea and Solomons: NG forces are marching to Port Moresby to recombine Port Moresby Brigade there. Rabaul forces are also hopefully evacuated there. Plans are underway to reinforce PM with 5th and 8th AUS Divisions plus base forces, like one that will be evacuated from Cebu, Philippines. Plans are underway to reinforce Efate, Noumea and Luganville as soon as possible.

Central Pacific: Plans underway to make Midway a major forward submarine base. Now they just have to operate from PH.

West Coast: Set planes to train pilots. Sent some air groups from Eastern USA to San Francisco. Tankers sent to Los Angeles.

Soviet Union: Just set bass to expand. No need to do much else, unless you want to have air unit training 100%. Might do that in future.

SUPPLY AND REINFORCEMENT HUBS:

Fuel: Abadan -> Karachi, Cape Town -> Perth, Los Angeles - Auckland -> Sydney, Los Angeles -> Pearl Harbor. Seattle will handle North Pacific.

Supply: Seattle for North Pacific, San Francisco -> Pearl Harbor for Central Pacific, Sydney for SW/South Pacific.

Reinforcements: They will be coming mainly from Cape Town, Mombasa, Aden in Western part of map. To be sent where needed, but mainly into Bombay. In USA, I concentrate San Francisco to handle most unit shipments, but Seattle will handle some for North Pacific.

As usual, here is save with orders for turn 2. Might save some time for those who don't want to spend couple of hours giving orders.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/eq56wm9rb61y4ia/wpae006.pws?dl=0

You'll have to re-number the save if you have previous save in slot 6.

Enjoy!

I'll keep this available and will save from now on into slot 7.

Hi Sardaukar,

Scen 26 is my favorite scen to play. Not sure if I'm using Andy Mac lates AI.

I have started the game many times and for a while, every time I learned something new, I restarted the game. Then I started to play around with the editor. Probably went overboard with the editor.

So, I am now playing a modified version of scen 26, I added some bases that were added in scen 100, also added were some Erie and Lake class patol boats, more PBY air groups.

My previous game crashed on me a few weeks ago, I found that I had added some units in the editor where they didn't belong and my game kept locking up.

May 42 is the latest date that I have played to. Current game is 26 Dec 1941.

Two weeks ago I restarted the game. My setup is similar to yours, although I do play with AI set to Very hard and rotate between 1-3 days turns. This game I am going to try and hold PM. Last game I evacuated every thing at PM to Horn, figuring if I was playing PBEM a good JFanboy would take PM.

One thing that I have noticed is that LA tends to run short of resources during the first week or so, thus stopping the building of a/c.

Over the course of many restarts, the Dec 7 attack on PH has resulted in 0-5 BB sunk or damaged as well as none to some damage to the other ships stationed at PH. Two games ago IJN only attacked PH using bombs, and my current game no attack on PH. The TF was present but no attack, weather was storms I believe where the carries were located.

In addition to the heavy sub presence at PH expected them on the WC as usual.

Thank you for all the information in your previous AAR.

Looking forward to this one.

Cheers Andy

Dec 13-14 1941

Nothing major is happened. IJN submarines are menace, but allied subs also score.

This is sometimes game of patience and frustration. My bigger plans (8th AUS Div, PM, Noumea, Suva Efate, Luganville) just have to wait until I gather more political points. I did swap Percival to best ground commander I could find in Malaya Army. Well see later if it was worth of those precious 150 PP. Usually in 1942 I start to have more PP that I can shake stick on.. But early game...it can be frustrating.

When I have surplus PP later, I start to replace sub commanders, easy to check every time you set a patrol. Trust me, it's worth it.

By the way, in report you'll see how hard it is to hit DDs with torpedoes. That's why I love small DD TFs in DEI early war. And I state again that US fleet SS are not useless despite 80% dud rate. You can see that in reports. Use them.

Highlights from combay report, full report attached as usual.

Expectations:

Trying to hold PM & Rangoon. China is in this is bit irrelevant.

Getting useful units out is mandatory, especially 8th AUS Div. Everything else in ABDA is just a speed bump.

Non-Iron Man AIs can easily be stymied at Rangoon by quickly moving to reconstitute the 1st Burma Division in the river crossing hex SE of Pegu.

From there you work to extend the line up the river with battalions and brigades.

The AI will not attempt the river crossing against the division and will work to try to flank the position, but you can keep extending the line.

This tactic isn't viable against a thinking opponent of course, who would bring up sufficient air power to be able to destroy the division in the open terrain hex.

I had done this some many times I had it down pat and got bored with the Burma campaign.

In my current game, Iron Man Nasty ported to Babes (scenario 40), the AI starts the game with iflitrators in Burma preventing teh defense I described and the campaign has been much more enjoyable.

You mentioned a ways back that you were pulling an ARD out of Soerabaja. I pull every last auxillary out down to the shortest legged AMc's and MTBs. Everything that makes it to Australia has a viable chance of surviving against the AI, unlike against a thinking opponent.

It's actually town (Pegu) or jungle hex right next to river, so defensive benefits with enemy crossing the river are big. It'll force a shock attack, itself a two-edged sword. Either attacker gets mauled badly or wins big. But as defender, can always withdraw to Pegu and then to Rangoon.

This is how Brits should have done it in first place IMHO. 18th UK Div plus Indian and Gurkha brigade should help.

This is actually "all or nothing" strategy. I am willing to give up ground everywhere but not in Burma.

Sometimes (with luck) AI can steamroll you. But most of IJ assets are tied in Singapore.

Some more musings about minor things I do:

- use Naval search 50% at altitude 6000ft
- use ASW 50% at altitude 1000ft
- always put your fighters as high as their best MVR altitude, but min. 15k
- layered CAP, works well with e.g. 2 different fighters in same base. E.g. 20k best MVR and 15K best MVR. Often game engine bounces (realistically) lower group and in turn gets bounced by high-CAP. Downside of having fighters high can be that enemy may sneak undetected under your cap in some situations. Radar will mitigate that.

Agree with your loss assessment. The only reason for those two DDs to separate from Maya is that they were put in an escort TF for Kuma, which sank anyway at the end of the night phase. That set up the two DD TF for the British CLs to have a go at.

A lot of players treat the older Brit CLs as cannon fodder because of their weak AA ratings. But they have good crew experience and in a TF of 2-4 CLs, the RN can fight quite well against ships. Good on you for using them that way!

I also like to use 4 DD TFs around Philippines. It went well first with good results against invasion TFs...until they run into BB TF
