USSR. The European Fronts. Operation Typhoon and the Germans breakthroughs north and south of Moscow has caused a major shift of Red Army forces up and down their entire lines and have provided the axis gaps in which to push forward across the entire front.

What the Soviets really need is a weather roll of 2 or 3 which would result in storms or rain, respectively in the arctic (i.e., Moscow) region.

RN & French Navy. Italian Coast. The allies devote a significant amount of their naval resources to support the armies effort to take Sicily.

Axis Sub Threat Assessment. This means significantly fewer resources to escort convoys and set ASW patrols against the axis sub threats.

RAF. Sicily. Ground Strike. Missed.

Weather Roll The allies are sure hoping for a 2 or 3. Weather, at times, is the greatest Soviet ally.

Weather. Well not this time it is. It's fine across the map, which is perfect weather for the Euro-axis on the Eastern Front and the Japanese in China.

Japan. communist Chinese. Northern China Army Group. No combat, except for the failed ground strike. Just maneuver around the communist northern flank and into their rear with two division. However, if the communist don't soon react, the flood gates to their rear are about to open.

Japan. Nationalist Chinese. Southern China Army Group. Maneuver. The long term prize for sector lies to the West in Burma and India. Though Japan plans to hold off war with the British and Americans for as long as possible.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Ground Strike (2/2). OK but still disappointing for the Germans in the fact they missed the Soviet HQ-I.

Turn 17. May/June 1942. Axis #3.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Operation Typhoon. "Closing the Noose". The first of two land combats intended to close the noose around Moscow went very well. However, the second didn't which leaves some room for a Soviet counterattack and some hope that Zhukov may get out.

In hindsight it's clear to see that Manstein should have waited until the next impulse to attack. But, drunk with victory during the opening stages of Operation Typhoon, Manstein decided to push on and make the second attack this impulse. It really wouldn't have mattered if the attack had went well, which it didn't.

Why is Stalin surrounded in Moscow? Why didn't he retreat further east? The Soviets should continue withdrawing in 1942 too. The further the Wehrmacht gets into Russia, the better. The front becomes larger and larger for them, making it more and more difficult for the Wehrmacht to mass units for concentrated assaults.

The Soviets should stand and fight in the Caucasian mountains and the Urals. Those are the points where the Soviets have no choice but to fight. Before you are there, the Soviet army should prevent losses, especially of key units as ARM and HQ's. Choose the tables with the goal of saving Russian units if you can (choose Blitzkrieg as the Soviets if possible). Retreat every impulse, especially out of range of the dreaded Stuka's. Moscow? Stalingrad? Not important if it's spring or summer. You can gamble in the winter turns and stay put, but when M/A start, the retreat to the east continues... Only Leningrad and Rostov are fortresses in Russia, the rest: give it to the Wehrmacht the moment you see them concentrating on you in 1942. Leave the odd and cheap GAR in a city to force them to spend an impulse getting rid of that nasty blockade if necessary.

The Soviet army can come back at an amazing speed in 1943 and 1944, if one keeps the army alive...

And I see the same thing happening in China. Why didn't Mao retreat and attacked that pesky OOS CAV division last impulse? He should have concluded that Sian and Yenan cannot be held last impulse...

Great Britain. Land Combat. A blitz attack combined with an amphibious invasion and supported by RN massive shore bombardment takes care of two trapped axis corps in Sicily and produces a breakthrough.

Turn 17. May/June 1942. Allied #4.

USN. Pearl Harbor. US officials were puzzled by why the +2 penalty for a "potential" DOW attempt by the US versus Japan was still in effect when the USN had 2 fleet CVs and more than 8 SCS's. Well, after a quick search of the "rules" by the US rules officials it was discovered that SCS's with a first cycle cost of 2 or larger counted, which means that the 4 USN CA's stationed there don't. The USN vows to have 8 BB's in Pearl before the turn ends.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Land Combat. Weather is brutal across the globe, which limits combat opportunities for the axis. The Euro-Axis make one land combat attack, which is automatic.
