Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #3.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front.

Army Group Center. OKW, who fought tooth and nail with OKH and prevailed, gives the order to Rommel to pull his army group back west and link up with Rundstedt who's slowly moving east towards Rommel. This newly, actually re-formed Army Group Center, will be reinforced and then will be order to proceed back east and clean up the situation west of the Urals and captured Perm. The stranded (i.e., out of supply and not hopes of soon reestablish supply) German I Cav, XXXIII inf corps and 2nd mech divisions have been order to hold on their current positions until Army Group Center links back up to them after reforms and such.

OKH finally succumb to reason and allowed Rommel and what forces of his could pull back west to reform because of his precarious supply situation. There was only 1 rail-line providing supply and the Soviet 2nd Siberian corps appeared to be rushing to cut it.

Army Group South. In Southern Russia, Stalingrad in encircled by three armies and Hitler is declaring that the city will fall before summer. South of Stalingrad, another three armies push to the foothills of the Caucasian mountains and have manged to isolate oil fields of the Caucasians from the rest of the Soviet Union.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #3.

Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). The IJN is order to move out on all points of the compass and establish and impenetrable shield around the territories under the protection of Japan. And where this shield intersects with enemy forces, the IJN is order to engage and sink them or drive them out of the area.

Japanese Strategic Bombing. China. Well, on a positive note for the allies this impulse, Japanese strategic bombing was ineffective.

The US Army should get in contact with German units ASAP and attack like FDR doesn’t have another election.

It's Nov/Dec 1942, allied #5, which means mid-term elections have come and gone. With the US fully entering the war late last turn, let's say the last half of October 1942, I think the democrats were able to drum up enough out-rage to hold their own in the mid-terms. FDR's next election won't be until November 1944, so he's got time to shore up his image as a war president. Of course, his declining health means that he'll only serve only a few months of his 4th term if re-elected.

My larger point was that ops in Syria, Italy, and North Africa (exactly zero strategic gain there, since Sardinia and Corsica are already in Allied control) will not distract the Wolf from finishing off the Bear. If Uncle Joe goes down, it is time for the western democracies to start practicing throwing the I-Ching before the Man in the High Castle. Sauron actually has more delicate Soft Underbelly spots than even Smaug did. The mountains south of Rome are not one of them, though it is a good accomplishment to have knocked his side-kick Saruman out of the war already.

Brian, thanks! I was just having a bit of fun with the FDR elections thing, understand and appreciate what you're saying where the Western allies should turn next. I thought about your comments and Western Allied strategy over the past few days. In the end, when I'm acting as the allied player, I have to (for better or worse) go with a strategy to which I can fully commit. And the one right now that I feel I can commit to is taking out Syria and the rest of Vichy France, taking out Iraq, commit to bombing German oil and link up with, and help, the Soviets through the Middle East. I also feel this strategy gives me a hedge against the very good possibility that Germany will align Turkey.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #5.

Actions. US - naval, Great Britain - naval, Free France - combine, China - land, USSR - land.

Western Allied Convoy Mess and Production.

Conservatively, I'd say I spent probably 4 hours trying to "reconstruction" allied production and supply convoy routes after the done by axis subs at the end of last turn and during their first impulse of this turn. In fact, at one point I got so frustrated that I decide to redo the entire naval phase from start even though I'd probably move 60 to 70% of the allied naval ships. But, I finally got my convoys working to my satisfaction. However, German who has 7 or 8 u-boat flotilla in Brest will most likely take a combine next impulse and again wreck the allied convoys. But such is the nature of the Battle of the Atlantic.

Western Allied Production and Reserve Convoys (i.e., organized convoys in port).

The allies haven't scrimped on building convoys throughout the game. Now is when it pays off.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #5.

Allied Production and Atlantic Convoys.

After 4 hours working with allied convoy routes and production, this is what the Western Allies finally wound up with. Great Britain last turn had to use their entire oil reserve in Great Britain (i.e., 6 points) for production. In addition to getting production and supply convoy routes back, Great Britain wanted to build up their oil reserves in Great Britain. For that the allies have laid out a 3 resource route through four sea areas (East Coast - Canadian Coast - Denmark - Faeores Gap). Because of MWiF's strong reluctance to route North American RP's through the Faerores Gap, the allies decided that they would move the 3 oil points "off the books" from North America to Canada when oil is saved. Of course, this "off the books" transition and the reconstituted allied production and convoys lines are all subject to not getting disrupted and thrown into chaos again by late turn German u-boat attacks.

Atlantic ASW Escorts and Patrols.

Speaking of potential German u-boat attacks, the resources the allies had to devote to ASW escorts and patrols wasn't enough for adequate protection in all sea area. In fact, the protection was woefully in adequate in many. The lack of naval resources was due directly to RN an USN naval commitments to: (1) Italian Coast, (2) Near East and (3) Pacific.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #5.

Western Allies. The Italian Coast.

Off the Italian Coast there's a lot of action. The RN put to sea 8 Queen Elizabeth Class battleships to provide the allies with bombardment support. Also, a number of HQ's units were moved to sea.

(1) Eisenhower will assume overall command of Torch which the allies are slated to launched next turn. Monty's HQ-A comes "on-board" next turn and will also have a role in Torch.

(2) Wavell HQ-A, Gort HQ-I as well as the British 10th mech and 43 mot division will be moved to Palestine and join Bradley HQ-A, US infantry division and RSA terr corps there for upcoming action against the Vichy in Syria and against Iraq.

(3) Alexander HQ-I will command the Italian Front, which in the short term will be transitioning to a defensive mission.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #5.

RN. Asiatic Fleet.

The RN's newly formed Asiatic Fleet sortie into the Arabian Sea to establish/maintain supply and "re-position" for higher sea boxes next turn. Note the Admiral King has loaned the Brits the USN heavy cruiser Pensacola for this fleet.

Neither side wished to initiate combat. The risk was too great for both sides.
