The Allies could shift the odds to +3 with 2 CVP's committed. On that basis, the Italians decline to fly.

I go with Assault as at 7:1 the Blitz would be automatic success.

The invasion turns into a farce.

Mosquito rebases from UK to Olbia. Two Spitfires rebase from Cagliari to Sicily. Buffalo from Tripoli to Malta.

US rebases two CVP from Wasp to Lex and Saratoga. P-40 from Wake to Kwajalein.

Nimitz reorgs 3 CV's.

Jan/Feb 1943
Impulse: 7 (Axis)

Declarations of War and Alignments:
Japan

Indo-China is aligned

Japan: Land
Germany: Land
Italy: Combined

Port Attack: None
Naval Air: None

Naval Movement:
Italy

A Sub moves into the Western Mediterranean but declines combat

Strategic Bombing: None
Ground Strike: None

Rail Movement:
Japan

A GARR is railed to Tokyo
An INF DIV is railed to Bangkok from Singora

Land Movement:
Italy

A couple of corps head for Sicily

Germany

More reorganising on the Eastern Front but the main movement is the rush of whatever Germany can spare to Italy. The Hungarians are asked to actually contribute something to the cause and send a corps to bolster the garrison in Yugoslavia

Japan

The pull back in China continues, although only in the north and northcentral China. In the south, Umezu releases forces to aid the growing pressure being applied to Canton. Hong Kong is captured. The Siamese fall back to Chiengmai and the tail end charlie in southern Siam occupies Singora to await the advance of the CW from Malaya.

Debark:
Japan

Yamashita and a mechanised corps land in northern French Indo-China. An infantry corps lands southwest of Canton.

Invasion:
Japan

An infantry corps and the Imperial Guards attempt a landing southwest of Balikpapan.

Land Combat:
Japan

There are three attacks planned.

1. The invasion
2. Against the infantry division northeast of Canton
3. Against the partisan in Hanoi.

The notional is added on Borneo as otherwise its automatic.

Shore bombardment and aircraft are added to bring the invasion to 7:1 (but its only 5:1 because of the rain).

I decline (on behalf of AllenK) to bring the Chinese fighter in as a bomber northeast of Canton because it would still be automatic - even doubling the defender.

I choose the Assault table (on behalf of AllenK) for the Balikpapan attack (as otherwise it would be 6:1 on the Blitz table).

A 2 is rolled. The attackers are all disorganised but land.

Air Rebase:
Italy

A bomber retreats from Calabria and flies to Salerno.

Germany

A Stuka heads south of Rome
A Fighter and a Stuka move from East Prussia to Danzig

Japan

A bomber continues the retreat in the north and flies to Tientsin
A Fighter in the south moves to Canton

Naval Reorganisation:
Japan

A TRS reorganises the infantry unit that just landed on Borneo.

The turn ends on less than a 2 - a 10 is thrown.

Weather Allied Impulse 9 - a 6 is thrown.

As AllenK is unavailable until next week, I'll post a few pictures of the situation on all fronts from the Axis perspective.

I'll start with Japan and the Chinese front

The Chinese haven't been hurt at all and are incredibly strong. This has necessitated a complete withdrawal in the north and centre. There is possibly a slight chink of light in the south where the alignment of Indo-China was designed to threaten Nanning and supply to the Chinese forward units. But we shall see how this plays out and, even if successful, is only a short term play.

In the south the position is even more dire for the Japanese.

Any thoughts of taking Malaya/Singapore, the Philippines or most of the NEI has gone out of the window. The Japanese also never took Rabaul and have lost Truk and the Marianas....

The conquest of Italy has begun. All African possessions have gone and the invasion of Sicily has already started. There is little that the Luftwaffe or Regia Aeronautica can do at sea, the long range and high quality Allied aircraft combine with the sheer volume of carrier air to ensure that any sortie by what is left of the navy, will be er.... problematical

Finally, the Eastern Front.

The fighting has yet to get underway as the Germans missed the Summer campaigning season in 1941 and 1942. Let's see what 1943 brings....

The construction pool over the next few turns makes depressing reading for the Axis.... Essex's, Offensive Chits, and just the sheer number and quality of units make for grim reading. The Mexicans and Brazilians will shortly be joining in the fun too.....

CW moves Bombay MIL eastwards from Rangoon. TERR at Dacca moves towards Calcutta. INF at Djibouti moves towards Berbara.

US moves Washington MIL to Baltimore.

No combat.

CW - Blenheim from Soctra to Port Blair.

US - P-35 rebases from Kwajalein to Guam. CVP rebases from LA to Saratoga. B-24 from Greenland to Faeroes. B-17 from Boston to Greenland. C-47 from UK to Cagliari.

RAF Harrow delivers supply to the Marines on Sicily.

Turn ends on a 2 (less than 4).

No partisans.

USSR puts marker to offence and moves marker from defence to offence.

How do the Germans wish to place theirs?

Edit: Warspite1 doesn't appear to be around. So I can save the game and send the file at Pre Prod, I'll repeat the last turn instructions, which was two to defence and move marker to defence. No problem with redoing if some other combination required.

Really weird. I was pretty sure it said 15 in the pre-planning but then definitely stated just 14 in final. Please just save the build point in Milan.

Japan looks okay based on your earlier analysis.

"Oil Situation:

1 x Oil from Borneo (saved in Tarakan)
12 Build Points (incl. 0 saved)

11 Oil last turn so should be 12 (less what is used to reorganise)"

4 points were used to reorganise, so 8 would be correct.

Germany has gone wrong and it looks like it did at Prelim Production. I've noticed 3 oils were shown as idle at that stage and appear to have then disappeared at final production. I've redirected them to new cities to get back to the 42 saved. Hopefully it'll give you the 45 once I've reworked the end of turn. Will have to pick up again tomorrow as I've had enough having re done the end of turn once with no effect and then having to try and figure this out.

After several re-runs of EoT where I tried to save the 2 Rumanian oils in various locations, I finally concluded MWif, for reasons best known to itself, was refusing to save the 2nd oil resulting in it being lost. I resolved the problem by sending 2 Rumanian oils to production and saving a different one instead. That worked.

Vichy TERR went to New Caledonia.

Two shore bombardment factors are brought in. I decline to bring in aircraft and rely on fractionals as I am just one point off.

The odds are 4:1+1 (19:4). Do the CW choose Assault or Blitz?

To move the game on I am going to choose assault. There is a chance of destroying 2 Japanese and much less chance of them remaining organised. I will re-do if that was the wrong choice.

As it turns out it would not have mattered. The fractionals take it to 5:1+1 (338 thrown) and a 10(11) was thrown

M/A 43 Allies 3

USSR declares war on Japan. Reserves are deployed to Vladivostok, Kabarovsk and a MIL to the middle of nowhere.

Combined: CW, USSR
Naval: US
Land: China

Naval air

Spitfire V from Malta to Italian Coast 2-box. Beaufighter and F2A to West Med 3-box. Hurricane and Beaufighter from Malaya to China Sea 2-box.

Naval Movement.

USSR sends subs from Vladivostok to the China Sea 1 and 2 boxes.

CW loads London MIL at Gib and moves to Italian Coast 2-box. TRANS at Gib sails to West Med 3-box, accompanied by 2 BB and 6 CA and loads Wavell from Tripoli.

US sends various escorts out in the Atlantic. CV Bearn TF sails from Singapore to South China Sea 2-box. I decline the intercept. 2 and 3 BB's CA's go from Ireland to Biscay 0-box. CV and 3 CA go to Biscay 4-box. I decline these intercepts. TRANS loads Canadian ARM from UK and sails into Biscay. Intercept this one?

On a 9, the intercept fails. The TRANS continues to Cape St Vincent 0-box.

TRANS from Ireland to East Coast 0-box, where it loads Ike. WAsp with BB and 2 CA heads to Marshalls 1-box from San Diego. Sub sets out from San Diego to Hawaiian Is 1-box. 3 CA's sail to Xmas Is 3-box. TRANS takes MAR from Kwajalein to Saipan. Boise loads MAR Div at Truk and heads to Solmons 4-box.

3 areas for combat.

CW declines Biscay.

First up, the Soviet effort in the China Sea.

Searches: There is some doubt as to whether the subs even found the sea area (both rolled 10).

Finally, South China Sea.

CA initiates. Allies don't add any air support. Japan has a few that can join in. G4M1 could reach 4-box. A^M2's to 3-box, other NAV's to 2-box. Other FTR's to 1-box.
