As it is now, we can get this data at the end of a scenario. While a scenario is in progress we can keep track ourselves by monitoring every Combat Report, but this is a lot of effort. I did reveal in Post #11 above how it is rather easily done, and if you watch any of Larry's AAR's I think he does this regularly. It's not difficult to do, but I think it does give you too much info.
That said, I think I can agree that an 'Overall Loss Report' would seem to be appropriate for TOAW. We can find it if we want to, so why not add a flip side to the I&R Report so we can check on these numbers that some players are keen to peruse

P.S. Switching sides in the I&R Report is available in the Editor, so I will stick my nose out and assume that this feature is already available but is disabled in game.

sPzAbt653, thanks for the feedback. Regarding leaders and HQ, how do you simulate leaders like, Lee, Sherman, Grant, Jackson, etc...in a ACW scenario or Rommel, Patton or Zuhkov in a divisional WW2 scenario. I would be curios to know.

Any side function/add-on to create victory or loss dialogs would work too but knowing their simplicity I think it would just be easier to add it to the game as a review dialog/window.

You guys really need to attempt to take this up with Bob. He is the current User Interface guy and would be the one to do the grunt work for adding anything like that to the game. Past experience would dictate you demonstrate what this would add to the game other than "GG WitE does it" or "because I want it". I'm sure there are some valid reasons.

Well, Commanders are already in the pipeline. (Hopefully, I'm not getting in trouble by saying that.) :)

Beyond that, my focus is on features that actually affect game play, not the UI. The UI got a lot of attention prior to the release, and now it's time for other things to get attention for a while. More over, I see this idea as a breach of fog-of-war. If anything, I would think that the individual loss reports need some FOW applied to them.

That depends on what effect you want leaders to have in a scenario. Everything is modifiable.

Bob, great news regarding the leaders/generals update.

In reference to a victory/loss summary dialog, it should be something VERY simple.

Example:

Equipment Type / Player1 / Player2
Infantry Losses / 634. / 873
Transport Losses /127. / 231
Artillery Lost / 87. / 129
Tank Losses / 263. / 411
Fighters Lost / 87. / 198
Bombers Lost / 34. / 12
Ships lost / 3. / 0
Casualty Totals / 785. / 1,538
Objectives Held / 400. / 200
VP TOTALS / 1938. / 985

Hopefully you aren't hinting that these changes are for the next release. If so, I have to hold tight and wait for the release of the TOAW5.

Like this, it's the standard I&R screen, but add the green [switch sides], and when you switch sides hide the red and keep only the blue. Maybe that would work for those that want it, and if you don't want it you don't have to see it!

But Bob just said he is focusing on game play features, not UI features.

They want individual man losses. At the moment there is nothing for that. And they don't feel they should have to do math.

sPzAbt653/Bob/guys,

Don't get me wrong. There are many things I like about TOAW the JTS games are missing. As I mentioned before, the victory summary and leaders was missing from the game and I went back to JTS strategy games to fill the void. I was hoping that over the continual upgrades and releases that the missing pieces were finally added.

I'll hold tight and keep watching the forums and updates to see when/if this gets done. If so, *BAM!* I buy the latest version in a heart beat.

Only question, can I load my older maps and scenarios in the newer version or do I have to rebuild them?

You could add a field like below but you would also have to add all of the supporting code. What's really irksome is people who say they want they want they want yet give no suggestions as to how their want can be accomplished.

Lobster, Yes, I gave an example. That should suffice. I've done a lot of game mods and dialog window scripts but I'm not a programmer and don't have access to the tables/scripts. This is for the game designers and supporters to review and ask questions to confirm what is possible.

Currently I can't do any images or links to show examples so I'm pretty limit on what I can show for ideas.

I know, you have an opinion and a belly button...as the rest of us. :0)

Maybe we should open a forum requesting for more input on how the dialog should work/look? Better to ask the whole group and try and cover the biggest demand /need with one quick update so Bob can go back to focusing on the game functions/bugs with minimal interruption. That would be my suggestion.

Once I'm able to post images, I'll see if I can open the topic to get more feedback.

I think the answer is, 'it depends'. If they are from TOAW III, you should be able to load them into TOAW IV and save them with the TOAW IV format. Older maps and scenarios may require being loaded first into TOAW III, saved as TOAW III versions, and then loaded into TOAW IV.

Cheers

Between the way TOAWIV(loss penalty) and JTS(individual soldiers, artillery, leaders, etc) give values about the enemy casualties the sweet spot might be to just use the equipment categories in TOAW and then sum up the enemy losses and show this to the player to give im a bit more detail on the enemy casualties.

Now what is to much info in my opinion is that I see what the enemy can replace or not in the combat report.
Would intelligence be so good that I know what he produces and what not?

Or add another column on the right, with "Enemy lost(est.)".
This would be dependent on your "recon capability", so a low recon would mean a large discrepancy between actual losses and the estimation.

Bob, just like all the efforts you made to do the battle results for your ACW Shiloh battle. That information should be easily accessible during and after the game. Your results postings were GREAT but obviously a lot of independent work separate from the TOAW game features. This is the point. Players want the game to tally the results and info without extensive dataminig to create independent reports.

Is this data in an XML file somewhere? If so, would probably be pretty easy to rig up some kind of report. You could even have "scalable FoW", so that the enemy figures that you see could be +/- up to 0%, 10%, 20%, etc. That would be pretty cool.

It used to be output in a CSV form but that stopped
about 3 years ago I think. I'm not aware of any aux.
files being put out but there IS a toaw_log.txt file
and you can arrange to produce a PO_log.txt and I'm
blanking on the names of the other files that can be
output that you might be able to use for data on the
battles. Look in the advanced player settings for
a way to turn these reports on.

I just discovered that the sitrep file is a CSV file and contains the info of all the battles that occured that turn. I don't remember what the numbers in the middle of each entry mean any longer but they are the number of losses, the number assigned, the equipment number ( for the equipment icon ), and I don't remember what else. You have the battle date, the side that suffered the losses, the name of the equipment, those numbers, and whether or not replacements are available. You can extract the data from this file to construct a list of the battles and the losses from it. The entire turn is included in the file including all the battles.

Hey you guys...I thought I'd see if 7Zip could unzip the part of the download file that I get when I ask for the combat viewer ZIP file from the interwebs. And it worked so I fired up the Combat Viewer and lo and behold, it worked. I gotta see if I can recreate the source code for this program. I'll do some kind of "how to use the combat viewer" thread so you guys can use it easily too.
