N/D 41 Allied 2

No DoW

CW and US combined, FF naval, USSR and China land

Naval move

US
TRS from Pago Pago to Mexican coast

FF
2x CA to escort duty

CW
From Liverpool BB and TRS loaded with MIL to North Sea box 1.
From Plymouth CV, AMPH loaded with INF, 2x CA and 3x BB to North Sea box 1.

CW is not starting combat in North Sea, how about Axis?

Not shown in picture and may affect to combat are TRS, AMPH and land units in sea and 6 factor 3 range FTR2 near Plymouth.

CW can fly 3x FTR2 to North Sea.

Allies have been quite lucky lately. It will not last forever, but I enjoy it while it lasts.

Indeed. And you should.
Feels like the Japanese roll was the first good land combat die roll on a long time. Although I would have preferred if it had come in Russia instead.
After the German land combat disaster I threatened to replace the die roller if it dared roll bad again, but somehow I doubt that it had any effect.
Japan, at least, have had some luck with the strategic bombing and that helped morale somewhat.

On the Russian side we were happy with the land roll but not too happy at the 8 BP's of fighters and pilots lost during ground strikes, and watching the poor Chinese land forces evaporate in most combats without much resistance while strat bombing seems to hit at a very high rate while the big Red Air force raid on Ploesti hit absolutely nothing is depressing. I think it balances out over a long game.

The two Soviet pilots survived, and while I am sure that the fighter losses sting the pilots will soon be in newer, better aircraft than the pre-war fighters they flew in.

I think that the Japanese die rolls have been below average until the previous impulse. That 19 might have changed things. Plenty of Japanese losses in China. And remember, Japan surrendered Manchuria to USSR to focus on China. China could, and should, be in a worse position all things considered, in my humble opinion that is.

And things might indeed balance out in the long game. But my general feeling is that die rolls are more important the earlier in the game that they are. Several high rolls during a France first is not compensated by a bunch of low rolls during the last few turns.

And, I think, there was an argument made in favour for the 2d10 table that it reduced luck. That Axis had such good luck with the 1d10 table that it ended a previous game in 1941. That there was no idea to wait for the luck to turn. I am just bringing this up to say that a concentrated period of luck can decide the game in a few turns. We had, in this game, planned to attack USSR in Mar/Apr in snowy, or fine weather. And we just got rain or storm. And some bad weather the following turn as well, and a fairly short turn as well. Combine that with below average land combat die rolls and one might be in trouble.

I thought the pilots were dead, glad to hear they made it back to the airbases. :)

As I mentioned I think luck balances out over a game, but of course as gamers we have a god-given right to complain about luck.

Clearly the axis side in this game is played extremely well so I don't think luck is needed to secure a victory anyway.

ND 41 i2:
Strat bomb raid on Ploesti v2 is as wildly successful as the first was a complete failure. The air crews are issued an extra ration of vodka on their return.

ND 41 i2 continued:

rail: SU sends CAVDIV to Manchuria from Stavropol.

China musters all possible force for an attack on the flipped 1-5 JP CAVDIV
SU shuffles units up and down the line and sends reinforcements north to Timoshenko as well as reinforcing the critical area south of Vitebsk.
CW sends marines west to defend the western strait
CW debark MIL and INF to Frederikshavn.

Chinese forces launch an attack on the isolated flipped CAVDIV. Odds 9.5:1 (after halved for Chinese attack weakness) which is +21 shown by MWIF. My calculation only makes this as a +20: 9.5 * 2 = 19 +1 for division flipped = +20. Any idea why game is showing +21?

Japan seems to have a ki-51 designated as defensive support - will it fly? The question seems to be rhetorical. :)

Yes, the Ki-51 will fly defensive support. It can land in the hex it flew from.. And assault. Thank you.

And the +21 odds is because the program rounds the attacking force just before calculating odds. So 9.5 is rounded to 10.

ND 41 i2 (continued):
Exercising their offensive muscles for (I think) the first time since the war kicked off over 2 years ago, the Natchi (often thought to be inferior attackers) come up heroes.

There is no advance after combat.

air rebase:
CW FTR London -> 42.36 in Denmark
SU MIG-1 rebases south from Archangel toward Vitebsk

No reorgs.

Impulse #3 (Axis)

No declarations of war.

Land: Japan
Combined: Germany
Naval: Italy

No port strikes.

Italy fly one FTR2 (4 strength) to the 2-box of the North Sea.

Naval Movement:

Germany:
2 x SUB (Brest) -> Cape Verde Basin 2-box
SUB (Brest) -> North Atlantic 2-box
SUB (Brest) -> Norwegian Sea 2-box

Italy:
SUB (Hamburg) -> Norwegian Sea 3-box
SUB (Hamburg) -> Arctic Ocean 1-box
SUB (Hamburg) -> Faeroes Gap 2-box
SUB (Bordeaux) -> Bay of Biscay 4-box
2 x CA (La Spezia) -> Italian Coast 4-box
2 x CA (La Spezia) -> East Med 4-box
CA (La Spezia) -> West Med 4-box

Axis can initiate combat in 7 sea areas. And Italy begin searching in the Faeroes Gap. CW can reinforce the sea area with the ATR3 based on the Shetland Islands. It can reach up to the 2-box. Will the ATR3 reinforce the Faeroes Gap?

The Italian submariners find the Allied shipping and attack. (Axis 2, Allies 6)

Italy selects to fight the 0-box only. Spend 4 of the 6 surprise points to select submarine combat. The 2 remaining points are used to increase the damage done.

What port will CW use for the aborting CP?

Italy will stay in the sea area. Will CW abort?

Italy decline combat in both the Arctic Ocean, and the North Sea.

However, the Italians search in the Bay of Biscay. Both sides decline to reinforce the sea area with any air.

The Italian SUB find the Allied shipping and attack. (Axis 3, Allies 10)

Only 0-box is selected and all surprise points are used to increase the damage done. After the convoy is sunk the SUB avoids further combat but stay in the area.

Increase the damage will change the A to an D.

Decrease the damage will change the A to nothing at all.
