Status: offline 		Saddened that Notre-Dame de Paris has burned down.

And, I assume, that plenty of items from our history, and culture, has been lost in the fire. Invaluable items.

I wonder if people around the world can come together and help to restore Notre Dame?

Status: offline 		What a tragedy, it survived the French Revolution, Siege of Paris in 1870 and both World Wars. The French should be careful of renovations , first the SS Normandie and now this.

Status: offline 		I got the same feeling when the Cutty Sark went up in flames in 2007 (also during restoration work oddly enough). Just gut wrenchingly sad that there was a piece of history being destroyed in front of my eyes. They restored the beautiful tea clipper - no doubt they will do the same for this wonderful cathedral.

Status: offline 		Was very sad to hear about this fire. First indications are the fire was caused by renovation work. Already 500 million $ has been donated for rebuilding. One person donated 100 million euro.

Status: offline 		As of now, rich people around the world pledged about 600 millions Euro for the reconstruction. However, let's not lose the meaning of the word "pledge". Time will tell.

BTW, if the Vatican doesn't contribute even a little bit, this will be a bad egg on the Pope's face.

Notre Dame is owned by the state, it belongs to every French citizen. And that's what their taxes are for. Well spent money. Now if the crows want to splash da money...

True. But the Vatican instead survives (among other things) via "offers": faithfuls forking their money while attending Mass (or when simply visiting a church).

So... your brothers are facing a disaster? Take a clue from what you do.

You don't pay to visit Notre Dame, except the towers (and the money goes to state coffers). "faithfuls forking their money" aka harvesting some petty money here and there is not their errr main line of business.

I'm just saying their help is irrelevant (and for all I care not expected) as the French citizenry will take care of their property.

EDIT: my mistake, only the [guided] tours (and "tour" means "tower" in French) are not free. I did not pay enough attention, apologies. One of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world, which I visited as I was born and lived in Paris

They can rebuild a building that looks the same, but it won't be Notre Dame. We lost that.

I'm 'concerned' that so many millions were so easily found.

Where are all of these millions, when so many people are in need, and not just an 800 year old building?

I won't be praising these billionaires any time soon. Their greed is the route of the world's troubles.

And no, that wasn't a political comment. That was me speaking on society as a whole the whole world over.

But I am all the same sad we lost Notre Dame

Status: offline 		From what little I have seen, it is not a write off. Yes, it will be different, but I was shocked at how much survived. A lot of the stained glass remains, the pulpit was damaged but not destroyed, many pews remain, etc. They actually had a human chain removing many artifacts. I read somewhere that one of the local priests and several firefighters, ran into the smoke & flames trying to save what they could.

Wouldn't that all apply to original Notre Dame when it was first built? And to great many other expensive construction works starting from pyramids?

Status: offline 		As I see it Billionares seem to be generous offering of their money to rebuild, they could have not offered anything at all. Everyone has the tendency to greed not just the rich. Really need to break the dangerous movement to vilify people who have money. Besides you don't have any idea what other things(charity) they do. So you are judging them.

Everyone's greed is a contributor to the worlds trouble. I see multiple reasons for the route of the worlds ills. Power grabbing, Killing, Stealing peoples property, breakdown of the family unit. And on and on.

Before it was built one man wanted a proper looking cathedral and actually starting building it before they came up with this!

I will say though inside is rather lovely.

Funny, in starch contrast the C of E cathedral in Liverpool is a foreboding gothic design.

Both of them very, very new compared to the normal age of cathedrals in UK. Some going back to 12th and 13th centuries. Exeter and York cathedrals are my favourite s I've been too. With their tomes containing Knights and other historical figures centuries old!

The news said a part of the roof was from the 1200s (original) and the other from the 1870s. Many accidents may happen in eight centuries. And I'm sure they happened, so we could end up very well with renovations from the 1400s, 1500s, 1700s and so on.

It took a hundred years or more to build such great cathedrals. They often had collapses due to weather or structural weakness. It's amazing how many of them are still extent.
