One of my eccentricities is to try to figure out what was playing on the radio "that day" ... down to the temp on the morning of, etc. ... and was just thinking about my and larry's 1979 Next War scene

On the radio:

Top hits: "My Sharona" and "YMCA" ... LoL man, that was a different time.

There were no computers, except for your little Tandy CoCo. Had dial-up, @ 2.4K LoL. I was learning how to run a Linotype machine, we did not have fancy robot laser beam printers back then, was still using hot lead type LoL and my hair was about waist long. I was a real hippie.

Then I joined the 2nd Armored.

and here I am.

ANYWAY, dae find that "setting the atmosphere" w/ tunes while you play helps? or not?

That is just one of my strategies, ok, well, have a great weekend!!!!

D,

I recall The Bangles singing "Manic Monday" on the car radio while driving in to respond to unit alerts way back when. My "PC" at the time was an Apple IIe, and yes, I had the game "NATO Commander" ...

Before I left, the HQ admin got a Wang word processor -- a mini-computer sized machine, but it was considered a marvel of technology -- beat the IBM Selectrics!

Then I joined the 2nd Armored.

Great line.

Cheers

On edit: Anyone playing the north Africa campaign who doesn't listen to Lale Andersen singing "Lili Marleen" is missing some genuine period color.

I remember a few years ago, I bought "World In Flames" on the computer, I was REALLY into that game for a while as the Allies ...

While playing it, I got hooked on Mireille Mathieu singing La Marseillies ... the one where she is in front of the Eiffel Tower .... I was driving my friends crazy, I would just BUST OUT in song randomly, "AUX ARMES CITOYENS!!! Le Form de BATTALLIOOOONSSS!!!! MARCH ON!!!"

Let's see, also in 1979, I probably went to at least one Jethro Tull concert. It would have Heavy Horses. Nah, scratch that, last Tull I saw was Songs from the Wood. I was more into Eno by '79, I think. Good times!!

I had an EIGHT-TRACK tape of that Warren Zevon, I loved that. My favorite was "Accidentally Like a Martyr" I could probably still pound that out from memory on the piano. Yeah, we had a GARAGE BAND back then, too, we called ourselves "COLOR" and we were actually pretty good, for a cover band that new three tunes. LoL.

I've seen that video of Mathieu. It was a very powerful performance.

Cheers

La Marseillaise, sung by Mireille Mathieu. American English subtitles:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MQ-SC9bmp4

EDIT: I've watched it myself and I must say it must be an old one because it refers to spilling blood and killing the enemy without mercy and it's really brutal compared to today's music.

I tend to enjoy post-WWII operational/tactical games. I've found a musician who makes what he calls "Stealth Music", which works pretty well as a subtle background while playing:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBF65FE19813DA2A0

Obviously it's not "period" music, but I find it helps set a proper ambiance for attempting to manage the battle(s).

One of my other hobbies is, trying to go "back in time" ...

e.g., lately I have been browsing old Radio / TV magazines, to see how it was back in the day. Highly interesting!!! I have gotten hooked on reading summaries of old soap operas, my favorite: "Guiding Light". Oh man, Chuckie and Meta .... while listening to period music.

That Chucky storyline is HEARTBREAKING!!!!! Ok, well, back to 1979 now ... got lost in the 50s there for a second.

Love the period music when I play!!!

this song was born during French revolutionary period.
At this time, German states Austria and Spain could not forgive to have killed the king.
This can explain how hard could be the words.
They had to motivate about protecting new rules against neighbors.
