Darwin feels fairly regular rumblings from the Banda Sea but 7.2 is a decent size.

Sounds like a pretty strong one. Is Darwin on a low-lying part of the coast or high enough to avoid most tsunami damage?

Saw some of the damage in Christchurch about two years after their big one - sure hope Darwin doesn't get one of those!

Tsunami risk is apparently low across the northern Australia coast due to the long continental shelf and comparatively shallow waters, plus very large standard tidal variations. There are low lying areas though. Quick google search suggests that a big earthquake near Timor would pose the biggest tsunami risk.

Do not want to sound cynical, but how would have they reported the same thing during WWII? "BREAKING NEWS: Liberty ship is breaking"?

It would read the same. In WWII it would have been an actual AKE exploding....

To bring us slightly back on topic, did the Japanese destroy any AKE or ammunition-type ships during the war? I would think they were pretty heavily protected, particularly in the latter years when they were most numerous.

I think that one was hit by a kamikaze plane.

SS John Burke

On December 28, 1944, while transporting ammunition to Mindoro, Philippines, Burke was hit by a Japanese kamikaze aircraft, and disintegrated in a tremendous explosion.
All 68 hands aboard the BURKE were lost.
