While this book focuses on the ace pilots it does provide a decent overview of Japanese WW2 fighters, including color illustrations and line drawings.

You're welcome to borrow the Rand McNally Encyclopedia of Military Aircraft 1914 - 1980. It's got pretty good info. Like a lot of the books I have on such subjects, the spine is reinforced with duct tape, making it that much more manly.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that I have in storage.

What I'm particularly looking for is something that takes each plane apart and say's "This worked , that didn't", going into strengths and weaknesses , particularly in combat versus allied aircraft.

WWII Aircraft Performance

In particular, look for the "Memorandum Reports" of the various aircraft under the "Japan" menu. Those are the test flight reports completed by the Air Materiel Command during and after the war.

If you're looking for a more personal story try 'Samurai' by Saburo Sakai and Martin Caiden.
(sorry if my spelling is wrong)
