1 Sqn 12.6.40:

This was the last the ground personnel saw of the aircraft until the arrival at Angers two days later. The convoy arrived in the midst of refugees from Paris but was well under way by midnight.

The convoy arrived at Souge at 02.00 hours and was met by D.R. from No. 226 Squadron who led the convoy to a <unreadable> road not far from the aerodrome. It was understood that orders for a further move would be made through No. 226 Squadron during the course of the morning. At dawn it was seen that the convoy was dispersed on open road so a reconnaissance was made of the local countryside, and it was decided to move the convoy to a wood about four miles away which offered quite good cover. There was considerable air activity during the morning by both Battle aircraft and enemy aircraft but apparently the convoy was not observed. No. 226 Squadron had no orders for us to move but was busily packing themselves. It was impossible to contact Panther by telephone but communications was eventually established with No. 67 Wing by W/T. The had no messages to pass. The Medical Officer and the Interpreter left for No. 67 Wing by car. Lunch was taken then and the return of the visitors from No. 67 Wing was eagerly awaited. The Medical Officer returned during the afternoon to say that the Wing Commander thought the ground party of the Squadron was already at Angers and that our orders were to come from Panther so F/Lt. Roberts decided to move the unit to Angers and at 18.00 hours the convoy moved off. On passing through Le Chartre at 19.30 hours the convoy was machine gunned by low flying aircraft; cover was taken and no inuries sustained. Squadron did several patrols along Seine, operating from Matthew near Caen.

Base Changes

18 Sqn(Blenheim IV) moved to West Raynham

73 Sqn 13.6.40:

Cold and very rainy.Nevertheless, a bomber dropped 4 bombs near a sanitorium 4 miles away at PARISNY, our first experience so far here at that sort of thing. Instructions for the pending move were received to-day. We are to move into the NANTES area at short notice. We still hope to be completely mobile as there is still a chance of getting our five lorries back from 17 Sqn. W/O COLTMAN, Sgt GALLAGHER and two A/C's reported back from the belated leave party to-day. A surprise visit was received from S/L MacEWEN our late S/L. He had been posted from U.K. to a non-existent Servicing Wing. A big company of English tanks, passed through to-day. The pitiless downpour of rain has played havoc with the refugees passing through very many of them walking or cycling. The Sqn. proceeded, in two patrols, to CAEN this afternoon and evening. The C/O led the second patrol.

Base Changes

46 Sqn(Hurricane I) moved to Digby
53 Sqn(Blenheim IV) moved to Gatwick

1 Sqn 14.6.40:

The main convoy arrived on the outskirts of Angers about 01.00 hours and was met by a small advance party which had gone ahead to find out what was to be done. The advance party had located both Panther and Baff, and had arrived <unreadable> and several different instructions were given. Eventually a section of No. 67 Wing was located and it was definitely arranged that the Squadron was to remain at Angers and that the aircraft would be arriving the following morning. The C.O. arrived on the scene and confirmed this information. The convoy was then led through the town to a very temporary dispersal point on the road about two miles from the aerodrome and settled down for the night at 03.00 hours. About one hour afterwards a reconnaissance was made of the neighbourhood and a dispersal point was found in the grounds of a Chateau about three and a half miles from the aerodrome. The Countess to whom the Chateau belonged was called from bed and permission was obtained for the use of the grounds. At 09.00 hours the convoy moved into the Chateau grounds and partook of a hasty breakfast. The morning was spent in arranged temporary settlement in the grounds but at 11.00 hours orders were received for the immediate movement of the Squadron to Nantes to report to No. 2 Base Area. During the morning several of the Squadron aircraft arrived and left for Nantes. The aerodrome was littered with sundry aircraft, Hurricanes, Battles, Magister and several other aircraft of various sorts and frequent trips to and from Nantes were necessary before all the aircraft were moved. The convoy moved off Angers for Nantes at 13.00 hours and proceeded along the main road which was blocked by refugees in many places. The journey was eventually accomplished and the convoy arrived at Nantes to find aircraft and Pilots already installed at an aerodrome that had so many aircraft it looked like several Empire Air Days all at once. The convoy then moved into a wood with No. 67 Wing, but a number of vehicles parked in a wood a little nearer the aerodrome. The Flight, Maintenance and Armoury left for the aerodrome and immediately commenced work on several new Hurricanes which had come to hand. The aerodrome was very congested with cars and aeroplanes which were leaving for the U.K. at frequent intervals. The aircraft of No. 73 and No. 242 Squadrons were also on the aerodrome and continuous patrols were maintained over the port of St. Nazaire. Soon after dark the Squadron retired for a well earned rest underneath the stars in the wood, but dawn came all too soon. F/Lt's Warcup and M.H. Brown (34907). Missing

Base Changes

103 Sqn(Battle I) moved to Souge

1 Sqn 15.6.40:

The day although seeming very hectic, was really spent quietly settling in to the wood with the Wing. There was plenty of work for all of the aerodrome crews as the aircraft were almost operating continuously. All of the available guns were dispersed in the surrounding fields as protection against possible attacks from the parachutists and any other form of attack that might have appeared imminent.

Base Changes

73 Sqn(Hurricane I) moved to Nantes
142 Sqn(Battle I) moved to Waddington
150 Sqn(Battle I) moved to Abingdon

1 Sqn 16.6.40:

The morning opened much the same as the previous day but there was a feeling that in the a.m. there would be another movement in some direction, as yet unknown. At about 10.00 hours orders were received from the Wing Commander that all personnel that could be spared were to leave for St. Nazaire immediately. Accordingly, F/Lt. Barber with almost 250 men left in lorries with just the kit they could carry left at about 11.30, and eventually proceeded to Brest and thence to Plymouth. Activities at the aerodrome increased in intensity and arrangements were being made for the move of the remainder of the Unit to operate from an aerodrome at La Rochelle, from which port the last of the ground personnel were to escape to England. During the moving the ground party of No. 7 Squadron arrived but they left almost straight away for Brest.

Base Changes

12 Sqn(Battle I) moved to Finningley
103 Sqn(Battle I) moved to Honington

1 Sqn 17.6.40:

During the night there had been a terrible thunder storm and most people awoke rather damp but spirits were still high. Arrangements were still being made for the move to La Rochelle but at midday orders were received for all but about 16 ground staff to move to La Rochelle for embarkation, the remainder were to stay on the aerodrome and eventually to leave by Bombay when the last of the B.E.F. had been evacuated. The journey to La Rochelle was made without incident of note and at 19.00 hrs. the party of 2 officers and 42 men embarked with 2,000 other troops on ten colliers, one of which was still loaded wtih coal. At midnight the strange vessels moved off from the quay whilst German aircraft flew overhead, and we said good-bye to La Belle France after 9 1/2 months from the day of landing.

Base Changes

13 Sqn(Lysanders) moved to Speke
17 Sqn(Hurricane I) moved to the Channel Islands
