Thanks for this thread warshipbuilder we here a lot about fighter command during the "BoB".

But your posts show how much the bomber crews lost so many men.

Even before the bombing of Germany became the focus under "Bomber Harris"

When I was in a combat stress unit I meet a remarkable man who served in bomber command and was shot down over Berlin in 41.

What he experienced over the next 4 years was extraordinary, being liberated by the Russians and then being ordered to join the assault on Berlin. With senior officers going missing after the liberation (never to be seen or heard of again and the the Russians denying any knowledge of them). Then deciding that he didn't like haw things were going.

A few of them decided to "escape"/ make off towards British/American lines after suffering the infamous march of death from Poland (He never blamed the Germans escorting them as he said they had no food to share with them)

When he eventually made it back to American lines and handed back to the British forces he then endured 6 months of de-briefing by MI6 to make sure he wasn't a spy. before he was allowed to return to the UK.

What a remarkable man he was and some others that served in WW2 that I met in there

What I have been through seems to pale into insignificance compared to them.

401 Sqn RCAF(Castletown – Hurricane I) 25.1.41

The C.O. departed by air for Inverness accompanied by the Wing Cmdr. in a Harrow to attend a meeting at Group on Fighter Tactics. The squadron is to be moved to Skitten which is an unfinished R.A.F. Station about 15 miles from Castletown. There was a scramble and the section was vectored onto an Anson near Wick.

401 Sqn RCAF(Castletown – Hurricane I) 26.1.41

“A” and “B” Flights practised a new formation of two aircraft in each section instead of three as a result of the C.O.’s visit to Group, all agreeing that is was a superior formation. There were no scrambles during the day and all patrols were cancelled. Night readiness was performed as usual. The C.O. and Flt.Lt. Norris visited Skitten by air and returned with a completely unfavourable impression of the proposed accommodation the country in general.

Base Changes

274 Sqn(Hurricane I) moved to Gazala
307 Sqn(Defiant I) moved to Squires Gate

401 Sqn RCAF(Castletown – Hurricane I) 27.1.41

“A” Flight endeavoured to get some practice flying but heavy winds and drifting snow prevented much work being done. Skitten was again visited by the C.O., Flt.Lt. Norris and the W.O. Our move is scheduled for 5-2-41. Part of the squadron will have to be billeted in Wick as the station is far from completed and work progresses slowly in this part of the country.

401 Sqn RCAF(Castletown – Hurricane I) 28.1.41

All a/c were grounded as communication with Sector Control was cut off. A train came through from the South, the first for about two weeks.

58 Sqn(Linton-on-Ouse – Whitley V) 12.2.41

Ten aircraft were ordered to attack BREMEN. Six of the aircraft identified and attacked the primary target from heights from 9000 to 14000 feet. Large explosions and fires were observed through gaps in the clouds but results were very difficult to observe owing to 10/10 cloud. One of our aircraft captained by Sgt. Fullerton seven enemy aircraft of which two are claimed as destroyed and one probably destroyed. On the return to this country two of the crews were forced to abandon their aircraft owing to lack of petrol, both crews made successful parachute descents one landing near WISHAW, LANARKSHIRE and the other near FULBECK, LINCOLNSHIRE. Other aircraft landed safely at KINLOSS, DREM, and NORTH COATES, while one returned to LINTON. The other four aircraft attacked targets at GRONINGEN, JERSCHELLING AERODROME, and OLDENBURG at heights from 10000 to 12000 feet. Owing to clouds results could not be observed. All aircraft except the two that were abandoned returned safely to base after being diverted.

Base Changes
