1 Sqn 11.4.40

Marshall of the Royal Air Force the Viscount TRENCHARD was expected to visit the Squadron at 11.00 hours. While the Squadron was standing by for this visit, orders came through for the Squadron to be prepared to BERRY-AU-BAC at a moment's notice; unfortunately this order was not definite enough to warrant the packing up of equipment. But at 15.00 hours the order came for the Squadron to vacate the village of NEUVILLE and leave the aerodrome with all equipment and personnel before 24.00 hours. The aircraft took off at 17.00 hours from VASSINCOURT and were at readiness at BERRY-AU-BAC at 17.45 hours. All transport complete with personnel and equipment left NEUVILLE before the hour ordered and arrived at BERRY-AU-BAC at 03.00 hours the following morning. En route, one transport, a 32 seater bus, over-turned when the driver fell asleep at the wheel. Fortunately there was only one passenger, the coach was filled with kit. The one passenger was unhurt, but the driver has lacerations of the face. The officers of the squadron were accommodated on arrival, at a large chateau in GUINCOURT with the officers of 142(B) Squadron. The men as they arrived were accommodated in VILLE-AIX-BOIS and JUVINCOURT, where their billets were not to comfortable. The Station Warrant Officer had a very busy time and stayed up the whole night directing lorries and was still on the job at noon the next day.

73 Sqn(Hurricane I) moves to Reims

Many of the men were hard at work before dawn, some with only two or three hours sleep. All the men to be highly commended for their part on the way they worked such long hours and under the conditions which they carried on. By noon, the Squadron was quite settled in with Maintenance and Night tents erected. The pilots took over a windowless concrete hutment normally used for ammunition stores and with the aid of a stove and gramaphone and a few petrol boxes, made it quite comfortable. On the whole the Squadron being very versatile, settled down to its normal routine and took advantage of what little there was to offer in the way of comforts. There was no flying at all, weather cloudy with rain occasionally.

Unfortunately there are no records for 87 Squadron for April 1940. May 1940 is hand written and I am not spending the time to try and decipher somebody's scribbling. Next to nothing in June 1940, but it gets interesting in July 1940. So I may go back to it then, depends on how much fun 1 Squadron is having.

No flying today. Everyone waiting for some appearance of the jab for which we have been moved to the REIMS area. The Squadron received a congratulatory wire from the A.O.C. on the efficient and speedy execution of the move and during the late afternoon the A.O.C. personnel inspected the Squadron on the aerodrome.

The billeting of airmen in the two villages with the shortage of transport and the long distance from the aerodrome was proving to be most impracticable, so a search was made for a suitable village which was near the aerodrome and could accommodate the whole Squadron. Communication by telephone to the aerodrome is insufficient there being only one line and that to Wing Headquarters (Operations Room). Amy communication other than to Ops had to be carried by dispatch rider. Still no flying. Weather cloudy 10/10 with intermittent rain.

Base Changes

77 Sqn(Whitley V) to Kinloss

Through the determination of Squadron Leader Halahan, our C.O. and ability of our interpreter, we mangaged to get PONTEVert 1 Squadron billets and we moved during the afternoon. PONTAVERT which was built since the last war, was of course very clean and properly drained and open. The Airmen's billets were much better and the 'Caves' were larger and better, and above all the citizens were properly keen to have the Squadron in their village. For the Officer's Mess we had the use of a bungalow which in peace time had been a summer cottage.

Base and Equipment change:

22 Sqn moves to North Coates and flies their first mission in the Beaufort.

We carried out affiliation exercises with Battle Squadrons 142 and 12, which were excellent practice for our new and inexperienced pilots. The C.O. made a reconnaissance of the near Belgian and Luxembourgh borders in the morning and noted much activity mostly Allied Transport moving towards those frontiers. The pilots are all fed up with the lack of activity and the long stand-by hours which seem of no avail.

More affiliation with the Battle squadrons today. A new Hurricane was delivered to the Squadron, equipped with a constant speed propeller and was flown by the C.O. and other pilots, all of them were very pleased with it's operation performance. The Pilot who delivered it gave the pilots a few hints on it's operation and later discussed requirements <unreadable> fighters with the more experienced pilots. During the evening orders came through for the Squadron to move to VASSINCOURT the following day.

Firsts and Lasts

9 Sqn(Honington) flew its first mission in the Wellington IC
64 Sqn(Church Fenton) flew its last mission in the Blenheim IF

The Squadron packed up and the transport moved off in it's own time instead of ordered. The greater part had left for VASSINCOURT by mid-day. The aircraft took off and returned to VASSINCOURT by various routes by Sections as unobtrusively as possible and were at readiness at 17.15 hours. Some difficulty was experienced at getting village MARIE as the Officer's Mess as before, but what difficulty there was, was ironed out in time for tea. The Officers were the guests of the Hotel-de-Meuz for a welcome home dinner.

Base Changes

73 Sqn(Hurricane I) moved to Rouvres

1 Sqn 20.4.40:

The first day of our return to our old haunts we encountered enemy aircraft over Metz frontier a H.E.111 escorted by two M.E.109s and an H.E.112 was attacked by F/Lt HANKS, P/O MOULD, Sgts BERRY and ALBONICO, near CHARNAY at 23,000 feet. In the incident that followed the H.E.111 was shot down by F/Lt HANKS and landed within our lines. One M.E.109 was shot down by BERRY, ALBONICO also claimed a 109. The 112 was attacked by P/O MOULD and was last seen diving steeply for Germany with black smoke pouring from it. Sgt BERRY who saw the H.E.112 fire from the front view states that it bore Wing Armament placed much the same as our Spitfire and may have been six or eight guns. This was the first H.E.112 ever engaged in this war on the Western Front.
At the same time another of our patrols led by F/Lt WALKER consisting of F.O.'s BROWN, DRAKE and STRATTON met 9 M.E.109's. F/Lt. Walker got one 109 which crashed in our own lines, F.O. BROWN brought down another which crashed behind it's own lines. F.O. DRAKE flying up to attack three M.E.'s, two of which he fired on in succession, one he saw go down out of control and the other which he attacked he followed to ground level and chased it into Germany and saw it crash in to a hill. DRAKE kept up to the M.E. quite easily at ground level using about 8 lbs. boost. At 09.45 hours F.O. KILMARTIN took off after a high flying aircraft which passed over our aerodrome emitting smoke trails and caught it up somewhere's between CHALON and REIMS at 16,000 feet. The enemy pilot then sighted the pursuing fighter and started losing height and it was some time before he finally got in range of enemy. By this time both aircraft were very near ground and enemy used skidding turns to throw off his pursuer, but as he did this he made it much easier for KILMARTIN to stay in range, as enemy flew straight and level. All this time enemy rear gunner was firing at our aircraft and one bullet entered the cylinder block(port) of KILMARTIN's engine and he was forced to land. The enemy came down some time later forced to land from the effects of KILMARTIN's fire. It turned out to be a JUNKERS 88, hence it's superior speed(see combat report attached). All the original pilots who were with the Squadron when it came to France last September with one or two exceptions have had combats with the enemy. It is most commendable how the Squadron has worked so well and made it a Squadron "SHOW" without any publicized individuality.

While on patrol over the METZ front during the morning F/Lt.HANKS, F/Os MOULD and CLISBY and P/O. SHAW sighted 15 M.E.109s above them at a height above the Hurricane ceiling. Our pilots tried long range shots at the enemy and two finally did become within range, but when fired on by CLISBY and NOULD they broke off and ran for Germany. Our pilots of course did not pursue them with the rest of the enemy above and ready to pounce. Our aircraft after vainly trying to gain more height had at last to return their base and be satisfied with a moral victory. It would seem that the enemy has a great deal of respect for our Hurricanes and Pilots on this front.
