At least where I live, we are not friendly with our storms and name them!

It's because of the press. They name everything now. Maybe some day they'll name raindrops and snowflakes.

The press doesn't name them. https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/storm-names.html

Some places are now naming winter storms as if they are as bad as Tropical systems. Winter storms usually do not blow your dwelling into the next county if it hits right where you live.

IIRC, the only change done to hurricane-naming was to alternate male and female names. Before, all the hurricanes had female names. I think that this happened in the ‘80s - given that Andrew already had a male name.

They don't have to. They just do things like bury your dwelling under snow, take down power lines, bring down trees, etc.

My father rode out Hurricane Carol in 1954 on Block Island in Rhode Island, if any of you know where that is. He and 3 other lifeguards rode out the storm on the lifeguard house and the water was coming over the the roof, supposedly.

I didn't say the press named them. I said it was because of the press and I'm talking about the recent obsession with naming winter storms. And soon it will be summer storm systems. Every storm system will have a name because it's popular with the press. Now every storm, summer or winter, they tell us how many millions of people will be affected. It gets tiresome.
