AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Feb 13, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on TF, near Port Moresby at 98,130

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 78 NM, estimated altitude 10,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 30 minutes

Allied Ships
DD Mugford

DD Craven
xAP Mataroa, on fire

all available fighters come in escorting the first strike but there aren't any enemy fighters on CAP today... also the bombers that recon showed the last weeks are gone from PM... the game starts pissing me off again though as I see most bombers dropping bombs?!? ALL bombers are set to nav attack with torps and there is an air HQ with 200 available torps at Kavieng, yet the bombers attack from 10000ft dropping bombs... totally idiotic, if I want to attack with bombs I wouldn't set them to 10000ft... of course it's impossible to hit a destroyer but that's something we are used to anyways... we got Vals at Lae now, they should do the trick...

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x G3M2 Nell bombing from 10000 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb, 4 x 60 kg GP Bomb

and here they come...

40 out of 48 attack PM and... A SINGLE AM... both TFs sit at Port Meresby and the Vals attack that single AM that Mundy has placed there weeks ago being spotted daily... 4 hits sink the ship and 32 other Vals don't find a target... idiotic...

what a seriously idiotic turn really... have lost a freighter during the first invasion wave on Ambon so I decided to include a cruiser squadron in my amphib convoy for the second wave... what's the result of doing this? We lose another freighter and have all four light cruisers badly shot up plus a destroyer in sinking condition as high fires usually mean death to IJN ships... what a fully flawed turn, must have been dork die roll time again... all troops are ashore and we will take the base tomorrow...

I'm still learning all i can. I almost never include BBs, CAs, CLs or DDs in my invasion task forces. Am i doing something wrong. I usually just have PBs. Maybe the 18knot CLs sometimes. I just thought merchants like PBs and xAKs and xAKLs were expendable but i would need all my naval assets later.

BB's can soak up CD hits with little damage. Saves your AK's.
DD's/DMS can remove mines.
E's can take care of subs.
DD's can take care of PT's

The invasion force faced 175 coastal artillery rounds with 18 scoring hits which is roughly 10% and most of the fire came from 180mm and 150mm guns. Ambon always offers good CD gunnery and your damage is well within norms. What did you expect them to throw wooden shoes at you? For RADM Yamaguchi, you have gotten away with little to no escort for your invasion forces because you have yet to face 200 coastal guns or more. Wait.

It's not a real life comparison, I expect the game how the game plays as always. If I wouldn't have put CA/CL/DD into that amphib convoy I would have lost a single xAK at best, as usual and as during my first wave. Now I thought it would be good NOT to lose that single xAK so I've put a real cruiser squadron plus escorts into the TF and now the CD goes out of whack. Nothing new in the game, but it still pissed me off.

today's highlight with the Indian Divs attacking on the Malayan peninsula... while they do some damage to one of our Thai Divs they won't have any chance to score a positive adjusted av and we have two more Thai Divs entering this hex soon... still can't figure out what Mundy was thinking to move them out of Singapore now being in the jungle, cut off from any Allied base... seems like this is the first campaign I found use for the RTA Divs as they are now acting as guards for this Allied POW camp... we will just look at the Allied Divs slowly dying away over the next months as they should have no way to move now...

first nuke bombardment of the war, this time Rabaul really gets trashed and we also kill quite a number of Allied aircraft at the base, no less than 17 Warhawks were destroyed on the ground which is quite a big deal at this date... Mundy already lost 80 Warhawks for not much gain so that means he couldn't build up fighter strenght so far... if I wanted to I could order such bombardments near every second or third day but there's no need to...

Chengchow is the area of our first real offensive in China, recon reports some 200.000 troops trapped there, so I estimate about 130000 troops actually defending the base and they are bombed daily so that base should fall rather quickly...

I admire Mundy's tenacity in defending forward, but this aar is sort of a poster child of how much the cost of doing that can be. Brings back the old Sir Robin arguments . . . good times.

yup! Was always doing some kind of Sir Robin as the Allied. Not all the way back to the West Coast but instead of trying to achieve something at Rabaul (seriously, how should this really work?) I was going back to Noumea and I remember sinking KB there with my LBA, surface assets and combined Allied CVs in mid 42. Mundy is (was) trying to achieve way too much way too early IMO. Makes for an interesting game though.

What more than sinking four Allied carriers in Jan 42 for no losses within KB the Tenno could expect? All armed forces are still ordered to advance and to destroy more Allied forces.

we spotted another convoy going to Port Moresby which isn't as dangerous as going to Rabaul but still a high risk maneuver and as expected Mundy also moved in his fighters to cover the ships... there were way more fighters on CAP than expected though but our sweeps do quite good while we suffered a lot of damaged Zeroes that either crashed or were write offs...

intelligence bombardment to see what the Chinese really got at Chengchow and it's about 1000 av more than expected... serves me well, this is a clear hex right next to a major airfield of mine so this will be quite a big blow to Allied troop strenght in Northern China when all those corps will have to surrender...

one of Mundy's stand and fight orders I just can't understand... we move our Army into Moulmein coming over the trails so he would have had plenty of time to move back to Rangoon but he stays and fights... not really a fight vs all those IJA Divisions plus support and we bag several hundred enemy squads destroyed plus many more being disabled...

paras take that base one hex South of Singapore where the Allied were still basing Dorniers which surprises me a bit as they don't have any air support there and were flying patrol missions for quite some days spotting my shipping around Singapore... my Mavis patrols usually get damaged flying one mission while having plenty of av support...

WTH? Our sweep goes in and no enemy fighters airborne so I was shocked to suddenly see CAP when the bomber strike come in attacking the convoy... to my suprise we see the enemy being caught on a training mission... both attacks on the transports each score a hit but attacking a light cruiser with torps is as useless as attacking a DD... god damn this is so frustrating the whole campaign already... I'm thinking about switching all my bombers to lownav to score bomb hits at 1000ft instead of wasting 200 torpedoes for a single hit on a DD or CL... the only targets those nearly 80 skilled bombers can hit with torps are 13kn freighters or ships in sinking conditions... can't remember seeing my torpedo bombers being as bad as in this campaign, wonder if there was a change in the mod or game during my absence... useless, just totally useless...

after KB was sweeping the sealanes around Java Mundy moved all his damaged ships to Soerabaja where they are still sitting... some 30+ ships reported in port and the Sallies do a good job but yet again, both CL Java and CL Sumatra are FULLY bombprove against 250kg SAP bombs... this really leaves me puzzled playing a mod that makes light cruisers bomb prove to the main IJ bomb... sounds funny when bombs can't penetrate light cruisers and torps can't hit them... leaves me with the Judy in early 43 that carries a 500kg SAP bomb and is a one shot wonder with service rate 3...

more bombers attacking in the afternoon, more of the usual misses... what strikes me the most are torp attacks from aft or forward that can never hit a ship... this makes around 40% of the torp runs 100% misses right away...

A6M2 Zero x 17
G3M2 Nell x 13

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
CL Leander

so that were roughly 50 highly skilled bombers attacking Leander, all misses... the best tactic against torpedo bomber strikes isn't CAP above the base but putting DD or CL into the convoy as those ships are targetted instead of the lower value freighters and those ships can't be hit...

Aircraft Attacking:
13 x G3M2 Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 45cm Type 91 Torp

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Calicut at 28,38

Japanese Ships
SS I-173

Allied Ships
TK Strix, Shell hits 3, Torpedo hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage

that was a funny one... we spot a big unescorted tanker convoy off India's west coast and the sub puts torp after torp into this small tanker expending literally 2/3 of the available torps... guess the tanker is sunk now...

TK Strix is sighted by SS I-173

deliberate attack here soon... the raw assault value shouldn't mirror the strenght of the enemy here as we bomb those units daily and our divisions are way more combat capable...

that's interesting too as Mundy is doing an offensive in Southern China... we have some 150 Lillies bombing the enemy and I can't see him having even a slight chance to achieve something here... trying to destroy this stack of Chinese units before going on further offensives... this Army and the trapped Army in Northern China would make up for 5000 Chinese av, that would be a big deal for him losing this in early 42...

WOW! No idea what made Mundy think this would be a good idea even though the Chinese had more than twice the av at Changsha... I wouldn't give them even a slight chance to achieve something in this terrain nor against my fully prepped troops... nearly no destroyed squads at all within our frontline and the disablements are spread out over all troops so they will fully recover within no time... has cost the Chinese quite some troops...

Changsha wasn't the only area where the Chinese were ordered to attack but also at at Nanchang where there wasn't even hope due to a higher Chinese av... why those troops attacked, really don't know as they are low on supply were bombed in clear terrain daily and faced equal assault value from higher experienced, better armed and supplied Japanese troops...

They are bombprove as none of the 250kg bombs penetrates the deck nor belt armor, hence they are still afloat after being hit by way more than 50 bombs. I call that bombprove for sure and instead of attacking other targets those CL get targetted all the time. There isn't more skill improvement than from bombing the port without ships so that doesn't do me any good either and all those bomber crews are above 70 grd skill anyways by now.

here's the turn's highlight as we have moved KB South from Truk to engage shipping around New Caledonia... we find a tanker convoy of variously sized tankers that are escorted by two DMS going back empty to the US... as mentioned earlier tankers are one of my favourite targets as this is something of the few things the Allied start to feel later on if they lose a bunch... in my Allied games I always felt being short of tankers while having lost nearly none as I am always extremely carefully using them... means KB is spotted now but that was well worth it...

and this is what makes me think over and over again that the strike routine that came with AE is fully flawed compared to the always working strike routine of WITP... had 85 Zeroes at Lae set to escort, same height as the Vals, 9 hexes range, all great morale and all the other blah blah that doesn't do **** when it comes to strikes and how they look like... if ppl still believe this woodoo after all those years then this is something the forum achieved and the devs can thank the forumites for their myths... 42 highly skilled Vals come in unescorted and get chewed up of course for no gain... two dozen shot down, the rest withdrew... idiotic strike routine and the more strikes you fly a day the more you see of this ridicoulos bullshit... I'm not trying to do a coordinated 1000 bomber night strike 800 miles deep into Germany, I've ordered fighters from Lae to fly with bombers from Lae some 180 miles to Port Moresby and the ****ing idiocy that is called a "strike routine" made none of the fighters take off... this is not a strike routine, this is not some FUBAR that happened, it's just a silly flaw as there would be no way fighter squadrons would say "no, we don't fly with the bombers today" in real life...

the Chinese were ordered to break out of the base to the South East so we have ordered a deliberate attack tomorrow... will be interesting how this goes with equal av but the enemy being bombed daily for quite some time, all those Chinese combat units should have quite high disruption... planned to attack in three days as there are another 3 Divs incoming but that could be too late when the enemy manages to get out of the base... even though we should be able to destroy the enemy if he breaks out as this Army will sit in open terrain but forcing them to surrender in Chengchow would be favourable...

Not sure why you think those 2 CL's are bomb proof. I suspect they have very high SYS damage, the fires will cause float/engine damage, they likely have most of their weapons damaged, plus every hit you get improves the exp of your bomber pilots. Me? I think they are exp machines for you...

They are bombprove as none of the 250kg bombs penetrates the deck nor belt armor, hence they are still afloat after being hit by way more than 50 bombs. I call that bombprove for sure and instead of attacking other targets those CL get targetted all the time. There isn't more skill improvement than from bombing the port without ships so that doesn't do me any good either and all those bomber crews are above 70 grd skill anyways by now.

well, they are bigger, bomber pilots would always target the bigger target.

And maybe this is demonstrating why most (all the other major navies) had moved on from 500lb ordnance to 1000lb by '41. The IJ was supposed to have, but all of their programs were late (and they lied to themselves about it). Jill was supposed to have been in production, the Kate factories had already been idled. Judy and Sam were supposed to be early/mid '42 … and we know what actually happened there. So yeah, I tend to beach my Vals and use Kates with 800kg bombs at low altitudes. I replace the high value pilots with ground only and go in at 6000 or less.

and this is what makes me think over and over again that the strike routine that came with AE is fully flawed compared to the always working strike routine of WITP... had 85 Zeroes at Lae set to escort, same height as the Vals, 9 hexes range, all great morale and all the other blah blah that doesn't do **** when it comes to strikes and how they look like... if ppl still believe this woodoo after all those years then this is something the forum achieved and the devs can thank the forumites for their myths...

So one thing about having you back is that you ACTUALLY look at your results. Its nice to see.

So this is actually what I like most about AE compared to original: you can't get too fancy because bad things will happen.

Even Elliot could not hide some of the terrible mishaps on the part of the USN in the early war. Comms frequently went down. Disparate units did launch and got creamed because of it. The Brits and Germans both suffered badly from this in the BoB … and be sure that Lae is nothing even close to England and France in terms of infrastructure.

So your outcome here, while far from desired, is entirely possible. And if you do it often enough, possible becomes probable. Yes, in original WITP this would work almost always. But we know that specifically this was completely re-done and I feel it much better represents the realities of 1942.

I once asked the devs if the coordination routine improved over the course of the war due to technology AND process improvements. I got a "NULL" answer. I've always suspected that it does, but proving it without access to the code is a long shot.

Anyway, keep up the 'rants'. Great having you back!

The specific messages and reports in the game have to be looked at as metaphors for the reasons of the outcomes depicted.

You seem to misunderstand me. We have an old Dutch CL here that was hit by something like a hundred 250kg bombs which would be most likely enough to sink any BB (or leave it as a totally destroyed and burned down hull) on the planet at that time and yet that CL just keeps staying afloat. That aside I doubt that Java and Sumatra could be nowhere penetrated by a 250kg SAP bomb.

Nah guys. We have a level 4 airfield, 48 Vals and 45 Zeroes ordered to attack a naval target at a base 180 miles away. Orders are given and when the bombers take off in the morning (actually the Zeroes would launch first due to their higher range) the Zeroes stay at the airfield while the pilots drink Sake. This didn't happen, it's just utter BS. Again, I'm not talking about some xy coordination of 1000 bombers/fighters going from several airfields to bomb England or Germany during the night, I'm talking about this nilly willy die roll BS that makes it look like as if there would be some routine with rational settings behind it.

Yep, lack of Zero escorts is strange. You have a good airfield, aircraft with comparable cruise speeds, likely high exp in both groups, same altitude.

My guess is:

-Kates/Zeroes are subordinated to different air HQs/theatre command HQs

-leaders in either group or both have low AIR skill (20-30 range)

no, all units have excellent leaders, that's something I always change before engaging in combat with my units and the different HQ thing is something that was proved wrong when it comes down to that coordination silliness all the way back when this guy with the snoopy avatar claimed he knows all about it

really, it was just bullocks by the game, nothing more nothing less

no air HQ at Lae but still, that's no reason for the escorts not to fly at all

11 more hits on Java, ofc the light cruiser still doesn't sink nor do we even start fires... what's really funny is that AA fire is becoming heavier and heavier as we suffer quite some damage within our bomber squadrons... Sallies will be ordered to stop the attacks on Soerabaja as CL Java won't sink by design and the other ships aren't worth any more bomber losses and the ships shouldn't be able to leave port anyways...

was suspecting a better result, especially in terms of losses within our troops... one division was seriously hurt, having 160 combat squads disabled but the rest was equally spread out over the rest of the combat units... recon shows the Chinese trying to march out of the base going SE so we have to attack soon again as I want them to surrender in the base... no negative adjustment for disruption within the defenders which seems strange after all the A2G attacks by 200 IJAAF medium bombers...
