just wtf? WTF? The day wasn't over (I really didn't expect much more to happen) when this strike was blowing me out of my chair... again what the F*CK? I saw this TF earlier during the replay but didn't pay much attention as I thought it would be nothing else than some subs and I also saw the Allied carrier groups fleeing to the South East of Marcus being separated from each other so they were neither a threat to KB nor even in range...

but then this strike targets BB YAMATO??? Why is Yamato just two hexes to the NW of Marcus Island? The only damage she took during the night was that single MK15 torp from a DE... I tell you why... because due to the "damage" she was split off the main task force and put into an escort TF with DD Shiratsuyu that wasn't able to move more than TWO hexes!!!!

and of course it also totally made sense to put a fully undamaged CA as "escort" into the task force... so because the engine decided to split off BB Yamato and put her into a task force with an immobile destroyer we are going to lose the ship... this is so totally stupid, it just doesn't make sense at all... a single torp hit, even if Yamato was only able to move halve of her normal range she would have been totally save only needind some yard time to repair that torp damage...

but no, she is put into a more or less static task force right next to 1300 Allied carrier based aircraft instead of happily sailing 200 miles NW of Marcus Island... she ends the turn with 64 sys, 17 flt (!!!!) and 36 fires... so the torp caused 17 flt and she most likely had at best moderat sys damage from the night battle as there wasn't a single penetrating hit and she was mostly hit by nothing more than 5 inch shells and yet our best BB dies because she is put into this task force... CA Maya was totally undamaged and the two bomb hits didn't penetrate the deck armor, she ends the turn with literally no damage...

thank you for such a reasonable outcome... I could already hear the Japanese Admiral in charge while he asks to leave Yamato behind to sink with the immobile destroyer in a sense of Bushido because an Allied torpedo was able to damage the torpedo bulges of the ship...

god damn, so idiotic... the whole operation seems to suddenly turn into a disaster... we depleted KB's strike power yesterday and lost Yamato today (sank two turns later due to the high sys damage that made no flt damage a killer)... so far we have sunk like two dozen ships including a CVL and lightly damaged some Allied carriers with naval gunfire, not to forget we also lost Marcus Island to the LCI(G) alone...

the attack on Yamato and the position of the Allied carriers after their retreat also showed they were out of range to attack KB and instead of doing the reverse Great Marcus Island Turkey Shoot against the separated Allied carriers we only see the enemy sinking BB Yamato...

this was the last action during the turn as another RO sub spots the damaged CVL Cowpens (took 2x1 torp) which was also separated from her escorts and sailing alone right in front of our torpedo tubes... WTH is that engine doing? CVL Bellaus Wood gets separated, doesn't get a single escort... then BB Yamato is put into a TF with an immobile destroyer for no reason and a third fail now shows CVL Cowpens completely unescorted when there were dozens of Allied DDs/DEs around? This is working like a charm, totally reasonable...

the CVL takes another two fish and a total of four is enough to send her with all hands down...

the loss of Yamato leaves me puzzled at the end of the turn... first we see her bouncing off 16inch shells from a modern USN BB at 7,000 yards and then we lose her the way we did... the confirmed sinking of two CVL during the turn doesn't pay off for the sinking of Yamato... would I have seen BB New Jersey shooting up Yamato at close range then be it but losing her because she moves only 2 hexes when she probably was able to move at least 6 hexes during the day is nothing but frustrating... even a magazin explosion due to the torp hit would have made more "sense" than parking her off Marcus Island as that just would have never happened at all, it just doesn't make sense... not to even think about the totally undamaged CA that was also parked there for no sane reason...

air losses clearly confirm the kill of both CVL... all in all, not a day to celebrate though...

this one too... as the enemy carriers were reported retreating East, most likely towards Pearl, we moved our subs into that direction too with a couple going towards Wake Island to catch any damaged shipping directly going there...

when I-29 hits a destroyer escort I guess that's the CVE task force even though no escort carriers were spotted during the attack... the DE should be done while I-29 has a fair chance to get back to Truk after one direct hit and 17 near misses... these highly durable subs perform quite well even though I have to admit that I really fear the DEs as they are the best ASW platforms in the Pacific IMO, rating them twice as dangerous to subs than USN DDs...

when the air search phase began it was suddenly all OMG what the hell is going on now? Allied carriers were given orders to turn around and close in on KB... totally unexpected move by Mundy as we suddenly see KB being in a position between three and five hexes from Allied carrier groups...

the Japanese alpha strike looking horribly small, we don't even get as many escorts as we would expect as KB has more or less a full compliment of fighters aboard, must be still around 850 fighters... CAP vs escorts is 1:1 but that didn't stop dozens of CAP fighters to tore up our bombers of which 2/3 were shot down... depressing start but at least we score 3x800kg bomb hits and CV Hancock also suffers a fuel storage explosion...

here's the USN first strike against two of our CV groups... it's actually one CV group with the CVE/CVL group in the hex as our three carrier groups were split up due to reacting (all set to follow a BB SAG with reaction 0)... this could have been a disaster right away if all would have split up and the Allied carriers stayed together but they were reacting too for sure considering being separated in three different hexes...

we get well over 400 fighters airborne to meet the incoming strike which is badly mauled but while we outnumbered the enemy escorts 6:1 they still managed to get nearly 1/6 of the bombers through... either way we could have expected more of our bombers get through CAP when we had 1:1 on the enemy fighters or more Allied bombers shot down when we outnumber their escorts 6:1... oh well, at least it was moderate rain so not the perfect strike weather and while I really fear the Helldivers they "only" scored two hits with 250lb bombs and both bomb hits turned out to be FOW in the end...

this Allied strike did NO damage to our carriers...

our first strike came from the Northern carrier group and the second is launched from the Southern... really no idea why this strike isn't bigger either, we have again nearly a 1:1 against the CAP fighters and our escorts perform excellently but the bombers are totally torn to pieces... it's crazy, we've got a total capacity of 1,500 carrier based aircraft and can't even overwhelm an enemy carrier task force with a good 100 fighters on CAP because most of our bombers are outright being shot down by the CAP even before reaching the enemy carriers...

50 bombers are shot down and the remaining 11 all miss... really expected more here considering the numbers involved...

our main strike in the afternoon, we have 182 Sams coming in with 69 bombers and while we again have a 1:1 on the CAP we lose 98% of the bombers... no idea what to say, seems like impossible to penetrate the CAP, even if the numbers aren't huge and even if you have an escort for each bomber... of course we had to attack one of the carrier groups that wasn't attacked in the morning instead of the other two so how much more could go wrong?

was a totally unexpected carrier engagement for us today and if the enemy wouldn't have reacted into three different hexes it could have been a worse outcome even though I can't say I'm really happy about it as we haven't achieved much... I know how it looks like engaging a death star but we didn't face one, the enemy didn't even get 200 fighters on CAP airborne at best and we still couldn't do real damage...

a CVE was hit twice but most likely isn't in sinking condition, neither is the CVL that was hit twice too and CV Hancock took also a 800kg bomb after also being hit during the surface engagement with Yamato and Musashi... I doubt any of the Allied carriers is in danger of being sunk and we will retreat KB to the West now, expect the Allied carriers to retreat East again...

horrible air losses for both sides without achieving much, I'd even say without achieving anything considering these high losses... with the Turkey Shoot over Marcus Island we are at around 600 aircraft lost and so is the enemy after today's carnage...

the Sam proves itself again against the Hellcats and can easily down enemy 1E bombers so at least that's good to know... no idea how many more escorts we would need to get a decent number of bombers through CAP to do real damage...

the Allied lost 500+ aircraft for one 250lb bomb hit on a CVE... but that hit did more damage than one would expect... as you can see, no other carrier took bomb damage...

checking our returning SAGs today I noticed Musashi's crew got quite an impressing night experience now... makes me feel really bad again thinking about how we lost Yamato and how well she could serve the fleet... Musashi was also hit by New Jersey's 16 inch shells from below 10k yards and the armor wasn't penetrated...

after yesterday's carnage KB retires to the West and to my surprise (again) the Allied carriers tried to close the range to KB... none of our bombers were set to nav strikes anymore and all fighters were on CAP so it would have been most likely fun to see the Allied launching a strike when our three CV groups stayed together in one hex with a massive Sam CAP...

looks like the enemy has enough carriers to mount several operations simultaneously now as a Dinah-III picked up a carrier task force near the Gilberts... the second task force looks like an amphib group, this could be the invasion of Tarawa coming in... as KB is still in the area South of Marcus Island there is nothing we could really do about it, will move in fighters and torpedo bombers into the Gilberts though, perhaps the enemy will grant us a chance to do some damage...

With the sinking of CV Franklin we take revenge for the loss of Yamato (even though it was more due the game engine than CV Franklin). The carrier is even listed as being sunk by 46cm shells but it was finished by our subs. Franklin took at least one damaging 46cm hit off Marcus Island, was then bombed by KB (800kg bomb hit with follow on fuel storage explosion) and finally hunted down by our subs which have put two torps each into the ship.

This brings me to our sub doctrine. While historiens mostly see the real life IJN sub doctrine being faulty it is perfectly working in the game. Had lots and lots of games (both sides) where the IJN was using subs non stop through the war with the usual result of sinking a couple of merchants for more or less the loss of a sub for each merchant sunk. At some point I decided that this wouldn't be worth it for me and I employed the real life sub doctrine, only using the subs against big enemy fleet movements. This was a success in all bigger fleet battles except the one in the Bay of Bengal where the enemy carriers fled right away.

With the loss of Franklin we account for 1 CV and 2 CVL sunk and several more damaged and without the subs we would have sunk none!

Here's the point development since the Marcus Island operation. Up until today with the sinking of CV Franklin I would have rated the whole operation as Allied victory, at best a draw just because of the loss of Yamato. But with the kill of Franklin it turns into an IJN victory, not a decisive one as in the earlier years but still.

The enemy took Marcus Island (plain and simple only due to the reason of having the nuke LCI(G)), he sank Yamato and destroyed some 750 carrier based aircraft. We've also lost two or three subs so far in the operation. But it wasn't without a cost, when the operation first looked very good for the Allied it turned more and more into a meat grinder. 2 CVLs sunk, then CV Franklin, the loss of two dozen high value assault shipping, DDs and DEs and also the loss of over 700 carrier based aircraft.

The most important fact, we haven't lost a single carrier and only suffered a damaging 250lb bomb hit on a CVE that survived. The enemy fleet hasn't reached Hawaii yet so there might be more than another chance for our subs to do some damage.

just doesn't matter if I'm on the giving or receiving end, I just don't like these ridicoulos results and no, neither the routine nor the dive has ever been fixed... how many of these loops has this campaign seen already?

During the carrier engagements near Marcus Island the fighter vs fighter combat looked great, neither side had a long lasting dive and the results were within reasanable outcomes... this time (as so many times before) one side had the never ending dive, totally shredding the enemy fighters...

if we take fighter vs fighter kill rate we get a 27:1 for the Franks, if we would also include the shot down bombers it would be a 42:1 for the Franks... doesn't matter which side, it could be exactly the other way around as these same Franks were totally shot up over Roi Namur vs CAP that had the never ending dive...

dive, fixed...

You probably already know this but just in case: Did you order the attack the turn the the LBA arrived or did you rest them on the ground for a turn or two? Generally I find that with the exception of CAP, air raids don't fly well if they are ordered to go out as soon as they shift locations.

BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

we launch a strike against the unloading ships at Tabiteuea again and the strike routine, funny as it is, decided to send Frances from Tarawa (150 fighters present there) with escorts from Makin...

the 43 Georges weren't able to fend off all CAP fighters and they were also not doing as well as the Franks... add in 50% of the bombers attacking from bad angles and we get 3 torp hits from 25 dropped...

next strike is escorted by the Franks from Tarawa which did a good job on the remaining leaking CAP... really wonder why the enemy hasn't put the CVE group into the base hex, most likely afraid to take hits on the carriers... that way we get a shot at his amphibs even though damage done in total is rather meager, considering we have 300 fighters and 150 bombers available...
