AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Apr 07, 45

ASW attack near Koepang at 67,115

Japanese Ships
PB Jokuja Maru
PB Sureboko Maru
PB Kensyo Maru
PB Karimo Maru

Allied Ships
SS Lionfish

I didn't expect the enemy to fully engage in this region so supply stocks at my airbases are not where they should be considering an all out effort... most bases have 20k+ but a base like Dili use a lot at the moment so PBs acting as fast transports bring more of the needed stuff...

we stick to our plan and send in a small group of bombers as pathfinders with a huge escort and this time our escorts actually engage the CAP causing lots of losses on the enemy during a longer dive phase... especially the Ki-94 proves to be deadly, clearly the best IJAAF fighter we can field... our initial plan was to have the IJAAF fighter units flying Franks and Ki-94 at a 50/50 ratio but we have changed the plan to at least 75/25 in favour of the Ki-94...

day two of the fight and air losses seem to be encouraging today as we have downed over a hundred enemy carrier based aircraft and even though we lost more aircraft in total our fighters achieved a kill rate in their favour, especially the Franks and Ki-94 did extremely well, only the Georges lost their engagements...

Mundy was criticized for flying nav strikes during his attempt to invade the Marianas and here we are, he has stood down all his bombers and fully focusses on a defensive strategy but this enables our task forces in the area to move around at will... it will also enable us to send in SAGs if needed...

not sure what is exactly going on but the Brits are moving East towards Batavia now again... as previously we will just ignore them as I don't see them being a threat...

KB is only 10 hexes away from the Allied Behemouth which is a tad closer than it should be probably but we are covering heavy units going to Kendari to stay there under a CAP umbrella... KB is not ordered to strike yet, a CAP of 500+ enemy fighters would totally shred our strikes even though it seems we wouldn't have to fear a return strike considering the Allied carrier groups have not launched a single nav strike against spotted convoys...

what really surprises me again is the position of the Allied Armada as they are now North East of Dili... I was looking at this screen for surely a couple of minutes thinking about the potential Allied plan and then I realized the Allied fleet was moving in a straight line exactly towards KENDARI!!! can I be wrong once again? All my previous assumptions about the possible invasion site were wrong and the enemy was going through my first two lines of defense already... a landing at Kendari would pose a real threat to all of the SRA and while Kendari is a good sized airfield with air support it's not garrisoned like a frontline base so the base would probably fall within the first two days...

we have already loaded several big amphib convoys at Singapore with over halve a dozen Infantry divisions plus all four Armoured divisions and lots of tank rgts that are heading South to be in place for a counter invasion... if he really plans to land at Kendari it is a must not to lose Kolaka as we could land our troops there and march to Kendari to fight the enemy there...

more bad news as we have spotted another CVE group coming North escorting a convoy...

I doubt that this group is heading towards Port Moresby and most of my LBA in the region has been flown into the SRA...

I don't play this game because it looks very complicated to play, but I do enjoy reading AARs sometimes.

Thought I'd just drop a comment to say very well done dude. I've enjoyed your rants on the numerous flaws on the game, and I liked how you didn't make any big blunders by splitting up your carriers to be killed individually or in small groups. Splitting up and trying to accomplish too much is a common mistake players make!

Well Mundy finally placed himself into a position once again where he could possibly cause real damage to Japanese Empire, provided if he can maintain his position in the SRA after the Death Star leaves the area.

I'm having a sense that Winston Churchill has taken command over the Pacific war after the constant failures by the Americans to land a decisive victory, because this seems to be the Pacific version of "Europe's soft Underbelly".

Although the "Soft underbelly" wasn't really soft to begin with as the Italian campaign would prove, the Allied Balkans Liberation plan was scrapped in favor of Landing in Southern France and Churchill already had a reputation with a certain Mediterranean campaign in World War 1 when he proposed the naval attack on the Dardanelles, which evolved into the Gallipoli campaign that ended in Entente Defeat.

Mundy meanwhile is losing an unstainable amount of Fighters so he might strike out soon if he figures that your not attempting to seriously harm his carriers.

Remember he has SIGINT and he will eventually know WHERE KB is camping out in the SRA and he could suddenly strike out at you if he figures out where your holding back.

I've also noticed the lack of IJN Submarines in the Banda Sea, the water is deep enough so not sure why we can't see them yet.
I also presume that you have MTB boats available to help pick away at any Amphibious assaults or even Bombardments against the islands.
Let's just hope that all your SCTF's forces have Radar as we saw how the disastrous Surface action went without Radar back in the Bay of Bengal campaign.

God forbid in any Surface action that we have any Battleships or Cruisers "Escorting" damaged Destroyers, we reach a point were damaged ships that can't defend themselves should just be abandoned, unless their a capital ship, Maybe having a Light Cruiser in those Task Force might make the game just send a Light Cruiser and Heavy to defend the damage ship instead of a Battleship like it did last time.

Is their any Night Air Attacks coming? Since we have reached the point where some Japanese planes have Radar fitted on them also the Moon and weather helps a lot during Night attacks, same can be said for the Allies, Darkness and weather will hopefully be our Friends in the coming battles, otherwise the Dice rolls will decide your fate.

The obsolescence of the "old" N1K2-J George is becoming obvious, it should've been upgraded to the N1K5-J variant to keep the IJNAF competitive in offensive strikes but its too late now and the J7W Shinden or something else would've been delayed if such an scenario had happened, instead we have a great point Defense Fighter against the VVS (Soviet Air Forces), the B-29, the B-29's brother the B-32 Dominator, The ultimate form of the P-51H Mustang and the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star...

We are now in 1945, looking back at the 1946 completed AAR that reach to the very end. May 28, 1946 appears to be the end date for the game,
I repeat May 28, 1946 appears to be the official End date for WiTP:AE and forces an Auto Victory that you cannot skip, but maybe I'm wrong.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile Imperial Japan's Ally in the European Front is well not having a great time...

April the 8th, 1945.
The Royal Air Force bombs Lützkendorf in the final raid in the Allied campaign against the German oil industry.

And as of April the 4th the front line was this...

All I can say is that the situation could be worse... of course some Butterflys from sinking of many Western Allied Assets such as the sinking of the largest ship in the world, RMS Queen Elizabeth near the island of Pago Pago and the sinking of the SS America during the doomed attempt to Dunkirk the Allied Forces in Singapore along with other Ocean Liners.

But anyway, its likely to assume that a lot of German "tourist" who definitely aren't War Criminals are likely to set sail in U-Boats and head for Japanese India.

Unfortunately the things that those "tourist" are running from will be following them,
Remember the B-17's at the start of the Pacific War? Well their coming back with a vengeance...

You should try it, it's a great experience! And it's not that hard once you got around the basics.

yeah his move is a threatening one indeed but moving in and taking a base doesn't mean one can hold it, as we have seen in the Allied operation against Calcutta which brought halve a million men

it really depends where he is going to land but striking from Australia into Southern Borneo or Australia means hitting the soft belly for sure

Mundy meanwhile is losing an unstainable amount of Fighters so he might strike out soon if he figures that your not attempting to seriously harm his carriers.

Remember he has SIGINT and he will eventually know WHERE KB is camping out in the SRA and he could suddenly strike out at you if he figures out where your holding back.

will take like a week until his fighters are worn down and that's the timespan he has for his invasion, from day 8 on it will only go worse and worse with every day

I've also noticed the lack of IJN Submarines in the Banda Sea, the water is deep enough so not sure why we can't see them yet.
I also presume that you have MTB boats available to help pick away at any Amphibious assaults or even Bombardments against the islands.

the subs that are stationed in the Pacific weren't alerted as I never expected this move that far North but there are 10 subs coming down from Singapore. But to see a real effect I'd rather have 50 subs operating against the enemy fleet

Let's just hope that all your SCTF's forces have Radar as we saw how the disastrous Surface action went without Radar back in the Bay of Bengal campaign.

it's mid 45 and all my ships have undergone all their upgrades (only Hiyo and Junyo are currently undergoing theirs in Japan) but SC TF won't have much of an impact anymore at this stage of the war, more like a sponge to suck up damage and to deplete the enemy's ammo

God forbid in any Surface action that we have any Battleships or Cruisers "Escorting" damaged Destroyers, we reach a point were damaged ships that can't defend themselves should just be abandoned, unless their a capital ship, Maybe having a Light Cruiser in those Task Force might make the game just send a Light Cruiser and Heavy to defend the damage ship instead of a Battleship like it did last time.

no night attacks, Mundy and me think the same about night bombing so if he doesn't start tactical night bombing I won't do either, it's just screwed in the game. If he does I could just set 600 of my KB bombers to night nav attack and cause serious losses to the enemy (have done that once in another game which immediately ended with the enemy complaining about a gamey attack - while he bombed me into the stone age with nothing but tactical night attacks for months)

The obsolescence of the "old" N1K2-J George is becoming obvious, it should've been upgraded to the N1K5-J variant to keep the IJNAF competitive in offensive strikes but its too late now and the J7W Shinden or something else would've been delayed if such an scenario had happened, instead we have a great point Defense Fighter against the VVS (Soviet Air Forces), the B-29, the B-29's brother the B-32 Dominator, The ultimate form of the P-51H Mustang and the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star...

haven't put any research into the N1K5 as I wanted to go with the N1K3 due to service level 2 but it doesn't make much difference, usually I just go for the last variant. The -5 never did much better in late war for me other than having more firepower with the two center line MGs though

big strike out of Dili (lvl 8 airfield) and Ruteng (lvl 5 airfield) over the enemy fleet... over 200 fighters escorting the bombers and while they killed way more fighters on CAP than they lost it was once again depressing to see the fighter vs fighter engagement being over in just moments... seems impossible to get a prolonged battle with our escorts, the CAP somehow can completely ignore our fighters, take down the bombers and return to the carriers unharmed (this against fighters that are way faster)...

despite having four bases full of aircraft in range it was only Ruteng to launch a strike during the afternoon... next engagement, next failure of the fighters to engage the enemy (even though it was already worse than today)... enemy CAP is at 546 fighters now which means numbers are increasing again as they were below 500 already, most likely lots and lots are coming out of damaged state again... with 500+ fighters on CAP I can't even think about sending in a strike from KB, would just be a waste...

about equal numbers in air losses but the majority of losses on our side is coming from the bombers that keep acting as pathfinders for my fighters... the tactic of sending in small numbers of bombers with big numbers of fighters is only working in terms of getting the fighters over the enemy fleet but when you have hundreds and hundreds of fighters on escort that could engage the CAP then it's just frustrating to see only a couple of dozen enemy fighters being downed each day...

having all nearby bases fully stacked with fighters I was expecting 500 of our fighters engaging the enemy daily causing at least close to 100 enemy fighters shot down... on average we manage only 50% of this at best even though that our fighter losses are minimal considering the size of the deathstar we engage... on the plus side the enemy CAP is down to halve from where it started a couple of days ago...

Do you just put low experience and skill pilots in the “pathfinders” or are you losing good strike pilots?

I'm losing good pilots in the bomber units. Doesn't matter all that much though as I have probably 2-3000 trained pilots for them and I can't draw other pilots as the pools have been empty since 42. And the 450 or so IJN pilots I get new into the pool each month got an experience and skill like 10 so they wouldn't even find the enemy.

Amazingly only 50-60% of the crews are lost when 100% of the bombers are shot down over the enemy carrier groups.

there was only one strike in the morning worth mentioning and this one in the afternoon... while the morning strike came from Ruteng this one was staged in Dili... nearly 200 fighters show up to engage the CAP and while they did better than the morning strike the numbers of enemy fighters downed are nothing but a fart considering the total number of fighters based on the enemy carriers... in total the enemy didn't even lose 20 fighters today, this when we send in over 300 escorts...

I'm really wondering (once again) about the movement of the Allied fleet as the Armada left the direct path to Kendari but only move four hexes to the NW compared to the position yesterday...

here's the main part of the Grace unit together with the majority of the escort which are coming from Dili... CAP is down to 449 fighters and 1 Grace even got through CAP but the engagement of the escorts vs the CAP was the same as all the days before even though we get an encouraging kill rate, total losses within the CAP are just too low considering the huge number of escorts we have... they just don't fight...

even more escorts in this strike as it's showing up with a strike from Ruteng but with the same result, only a good dozen enemy fighters shot down... when we send in over 200 fighters...

oh boy, so many played turns in all those years, so much attention and I forgot about the carrier group that was spotted SW of Port Moresby coming North to reinforce the enemy Armada... four or five days ago when we spotted that CV group I planned to send KB to an intercept postion around Sorong on the North Western tip of New Guinea and strike this carrier group which is most likely a CVE group when it's around Saumlaki but I just FORGOT about it because I was so focussed in trying to wear down the CAP over the main CV groups ...

silly me... we launch a strike from Dili against the CVEs and just look at the CAP, there are not even 150 fighters on CAP, a concentrated strike from KB would have most likely caused maximum damage... now that I missed that chance the Allied will increase their CAP by another 150 fighters... one of my biggest mistakes in the whole war...

today's air losses aren't encouraging... was hoping to see more fighter vs fighter engagements if I also increase the number of bombers but it just doesn't happen, the game at some point decided that there is no CAP vs escort fight anymore... feels like the longer you have a campaign running the more flaws or the like are happening as I just can't see a reason why 500 fighters sent in on average hardly get above 50 enemy fighters being downed, not because they are shot down themself, they just don't engage... enemy CAP engages my bombers as if my escorts wouldn't even exist...

the Grace unit lost 100% of it's bombers and the Frances unit was trashed too while our fighters do more than ok when it comes to kill rates, it's just total numbers being killed is totally disappointing...

here's the situation... we have two heavy cruiser groups plus Musashi and CAs at Kendari, covered by 300 Georges, the enemy has still not set his bombers to engage and Musashi plus a CA group have been ordered to engage the enemy fleet during the night... the SAG NW of Sorong consists of four BBs plus escorts going to Kendari to protect the base and draw in airstrikes if the enemy decides to set his bombers to attack...

at the same time KB was ordered to move to a position 90 miles NE of Kendari to fly an airstrike against the Allied carrier groups, hopefully to catch either the CVE group coming North (would preferre this) or to strike the main CV group before all that stuff will be combined... the enemy isn't aware of KB being up there (if SIGINT fails) and he hasn't flown a single nav strike mission in all the last days so I don't expect a counterstrike on KB... we will have some 450 bombers plus 600 Sams as escorts with only 300 Sams left on CAP and if the carrier groups don't react we should get a massive alpha strike that should get hundreds of bombers through CAP and hit the enemy hard... due to KB moving down all along the North Coast of New Guinea and back up again our ships are running low on fuel and will have to replenish soon but that will take three days and we don't have three days... with Kendari being set as homeport we can keep KB in the area without refulling for about another week I guess...

tomorrow could be a really deciding day in the war, the Japanese are seeking a decisive battle again and the Allied have brought an insane Armada for a repeated time over the years...

what really strikes me are the British again... having thought about a pure feint from the first day we have spotted them NW of Sumatra they have been consistently moving towards Java the last couple of days, at the moment it looks like they would land at Benkoelen tomorrow but I just can't really imagine this happening...

as you can see I've got quite a lot of shipping at and around Soerabaja, these are my amphibious groups that carry all my divisions to counter the expected Allied landings... with the majority of the IJN being at Kendari now I have no clue how Mundy is going to pull this off though...

Musashi and company going in engaging one of the main Allied CV groups (reminds me of Marcus Island)... it's 1945 and the IJN has lost most if not all of it's danger when it comes down to night naval engagements... the long lance has become totally useless with radar (probably 100+ torps spent in this engagement) and the enemy ships are one generation more modern than ours... was totally depressing to see the Essex CVs being able to bounce 20cm shells off or their flight decks, never seen this before but happened three times in this engagement... other than a single 40cm shell penetrating the belt of a CL each we did literally no damage and Musashi in return was pummeled by 5 and 6 inch shells (that did nothing) but also Wisconsin scored a 16 inch shell that penetrated Musashi's belt at 10000 yards...

that's not a good start at all and we really miss Yamato here... Musashi fired all her main battery shells in this engagement...

Mundy has a good setup for his carrier groups, pretty much the same as I do when playing the Allied except that I swap out two CL for two DD, going for more ASW than additional AA...

the heavy cruiser SAG that was also ordered to engage the enemy fleet didn't engage when the enemy moved out of the hex to what seems to be a move further North West... what? NORTH WEST?

what the hell is going on again? We're in the afternoon already and we didn't launch a single strike during the morning, some 2000+ aircraft (including KB) ready to strike... and where is KB? I didn't even see my carrier groups so far during the replay, neither did their naval search spot something nor was KB spotted in return...

air losses... no idea what to say anymore, just FUBAR... flying thousands of escort sorties vs a CAP up to this point not resulting in any real numbers of fighters downed...

what I've up to today thought would be nothing but a feint turns out to be an invasion on North Western Java which immediately changes the whole situation in the region, not because the British are landing on Java but because the US Armada surely also has Java as target... so how many times have I been wrong about the possible invasion site? Port Moresby, Groote Eylandt, Darwin, Timor and Kendari... five times and as it looks now the Allied are aiming on a major operation against Java...

I'm not afraid about the British landing in the North, we have already a Division from Batavia arriving here tomorrow, it's mountaineous terrain and we have level six forts, no way we would be ever dislodged and we can bring in more stuff easily if needed... the British are moving their troops in a POW camp right from day one with no chance to break out... not a feint but also nothing more than a diversion but we will still fully focus on the US Armada which probably is going to aim at Southern Java...

WHERE IS KB? That's the question I was asking when the combat replay was turning onto ground combat... well, I saw where it was when I was looking at the turn, KB DIDN'T MOVE A GOD DAMN HEX!!!

like I had it already happening in the past just had to happen exactly this turn again when I order my carriers to engage the enemy... all my TFs had full op points, didn't refuel and were following an ASW group and a BB SAG like they have done two dozen previous turns without a problem... today, KB didn't move!

it's just so borked, instead of ending eight hexes from the Allied fleet our carriers just sit idle in the hex they were yesterday and at least as funny are my two surface combat TFs that move the three hexes South from Kendari but didn't move back despite NOT being set to patrol but retire (checked it twice during giving orders yesterday and also this turn shows them to retire)... the Musashi TF is also more or less completely out of ammo so why it just stayed there is beyond me, Kendari is the home port... just imagine Mundy suddenly changing his mind, setting his bombers to nav attack this turn, we would have lost Musashi and halve of IJN's heavy cruisers because the two SAGs were just sitting there to be bombed... Japanese naval movement was totally borked this turn, call it a bug, call it a flaw, it didn't do what it was expected to do...

have reordered everything again so hopefully something is going to move next turn, the Allied main CV groups are now off Makassar but the other CV group that was attacked yesterday wasn't spotted today and it didn't combine with the main group as there weren't more fighter squadrons on CAP today...

with Java being the target now I am caught somewhat flat footed as I was betting on Kendari and all my heavy units were defending Kendari and I don't have anything really strong left to defend Soerabaja which is where all my loaded amphib shipping is sitting, just ten hexes away from the Allied Death Star... we do have a thousand aircraft on Java but my amphib shipping was ordered to move North towards Singapor (along Borneo's coast), hoping it won't be caught by Allied carrier air... I expect Allied carriers to stick to their amphib groups though so we should be safe (IF my ships move)...

we have to force a showdown now and we are going to order a BB and a CA group back to Soerabaja in the coming days if we don't get totally defeated tomorrow... with my SAGs engaging the enemy carriers I guess Mundy is going to set his bombers to nav strike now...

KB strikes! But also here, lots just goes wrong, nothing goes as planned... at least the game decided to move my ships as KB has moved to the ordered position... after the nav search phase one of my main carrier groups just had to react, as has happened so many times before which means we immediately split our offensive strikes in two... the enemy main carrier groups kept moving towards Java so at least we were attacking the smaller one, built up by one CV/CVL group and the rest being CVE... we have 245 escorts vs 400 fighters on CAP and no doubt that means lots of downed bombers but guess what, same as has happened with all my land based strikes was also happening here, the escorts did exactly NOTHING as can be seen by the number of fighters lost on both sides!!! no idea what is really working in these routines, as soon as you pass mid 42 and have numbers involved it's totally borked over and over again... I was even amazed to see halve of the bombers get through CAP, terrible weather prevented us from annihilating the enemy carriers but we still did damage, thanks to the fact that we mainly targetted the brittle escort carriers which can't really defend them against airstrikes if the bombers get through...

many of the bomb hits were 800kg bombs so we surely have sunk a couple of CVEs with this strike and most likely also the CVL that also suffered an ammo and fuel storage explosion... needless to say while the enemy carriers also spotted KB, none of them reacted... if we had a fully coordinated strike out of one hex and not the usual Thunderstorms over the target it could have meant game over for the majority of Allied carriers in this hex...

that's the strike of the CV group that reacted towards the enemywith the same idiotic, retarded, totally f*cked fact that the escorts did not engage the CAP... we send the next wave with 240 Sams, lose 2 and kill 3 enemy fighters??? In total KB has launched nearly 500 Sams to engage a CAP of 400+ and we don't even claim a dozen enemy fighters? Seriously??? Considering the experience with the game I just have to be amazed that we had bombers still getting through the CAP even though this strike was hit even harder... but for what result? We just trashed the offensive capability of halve a dozen carriers for 6 bomb hits, 2 didn't do any damage at all as BB South Dakota is bomb prove against 800kg AP bombs? WHAT???

the fact that fighter vs fighter combat isn't even happening anymore in the so called air routines is totally frustrating as that's a new one for me in all the years, just have a look at the air losses later on...
