Hi Mike

The Mk84 warhead is a standard 2000lbs blast fragmentation warhead great for blowing up soft targets like runway access points and buildings.
The BLU-109 is a 2000lbs penetrator warhead great for blowing up hardened targets like bunkers and runways.

Looking forward to the next round of AARs.

Good luck

Søren

Soren beat me to it.

You want to target your BLU-109s on something that is hard to kill and you want it dead - Runways are a good target, ammo bunkers are another - they probably won't do that good up against underground targets but they are usually the best you have to attack that type (a B-2 with a MOAB works well here )

Burst/frag Mk-84s are actually trickier to use - if it's above ground I like to use Mk-82s because you can carry a lot more of them, a Mk-84 is almost too big and I think that's why the USMC likes the Mk-83. A runway access point is a good target but there are usually (on Soviet airbases) way too many access points to get them all and shut down the runway. They are good for a group of buildings that are fairly close together, you can knock 4 or 5 down with one bomb. If you run out of BLU-109s than ground burst Mk-84s will eventually kill the target but you need a dozen or so - a Sqn task.

Soren and Bart,

Thanks for the info and help. This type of support is critical to helping people figure out the right combinations.

The information an air staff planner needs to know is incredible.

There are five different initial loadouts on the F-18Cs. For all my air craft I'm going to have to be careful about selecting loadouts when they return from missions.

Well at least you'll have more time to play in the spring!

Great AAR!

Quite a lot of effort has gone to this.
