The rugby world cup kicked off last night in Japan. The final will be held in hex 113,61 on 2 Nov.
Obviously I'll be cheering for Australia, and anyone playing against the All Blacks!
Australia v Fiji this afternoon, a good excuse for a few pints at the local rugby club.
Happy Saturday everyone

I cannot remember what year it was but one of the games was in Oz and the pub opened around 6am to show the game (I was in London at the time). The wife was not thrilled with what came home around noon.

The game is slightly different now (ie - the whole launching of a guy during a throw in), but IMO, a much better experience than American football. Just will never catch on with media because there are really no breaks for commercials.

If they did that, all of the players would be laying on the ground just a twitching and jerking, not to mention foaming at the mouth.

Imagine a game like American football and soccer combined, but with something like the football but no pads, no time for huddles, and unfortunately I believe, no lovely cheerleaders. I do believe that the fans also like to indulge in their favorite alcoholic beverages while watching the game.

My lady friend's son was playing in the local rugby league - he was the "hooker" in the scrum because he was the smallest guy. Lots of injuries and by the time he was in his early thirties he was getting bone spurs in his neck from the head butting in the game.
His rugby club has a tradition that at the end of the season, after the last game and a few pints, all the players strip and run a circuit of the field naked. It is usually around freezing at this time, so not many naughty bits are visible! Their girlfriends and other women spectators can get quite ribald with their comments during the event!

The main difference between Rugby and American Football is that no one can throw the ball ahead, only lateral or behind. (they can kick it ahead though).
So the key formation of the game once the team gets possession of the ball is to line up in a backward sloping diagonal or vee from the ball carrier and when the opposition blocks the ball carrier the ball is relayed back to another player who has a more open path.

When the play is brought to a halt (by a pile of players on top of the guy with the ball), no one counts yards gained, the referee just takes the ball and everyone gets into the scrum formation with their hookers facing each other in the middle. The ref tosses the ball between the hookers and they try to hook the ball back between the legs of their teammates in the scrum where someone will extract it and start running. To free up their legs, the hookers put their arms over their teammates shoulders and hang with their feet just above the ground, ready for the ball toss.

A "touchdown" in rugby is called a "try". So Yoda was wrong, there IS a try!

Thanks for the lesson.

Been a long time since I've watched any rugby.

You only count two - the one that starts the session and the one that finishes it!

U.S. vs. England in nine hours. Luckily I'm in the same time zone. Will be watching from a pub owned by a South African buddy.

Cheers,

Can't see the Eagles getting up, but I have noticed that since 7s came into the Olympics the US 7s team has improved about 300%.

Just ask Pax.

PS: I once watched a Wallabies test at the Bamboo Sports bar in Shanghai. Ever been there?

We didn't look that great last night. Not even a try. Still, there's time for a respectable showing.

I went to Shanghai once, maybe 10 years ago, but don't recall going to any sort of sports bar. I'd go more often if a China visa didn't cost $180 nor be a pain in the arse to get.

Cheers,
CB

Come on. The China visa application is only like a dozen pages.....

The India visa application makes China's look like a piece of cake. 'Do you have any relatives, alive or dead, who have any relationships to Pakistan, even if three times removed?' I am over doing it but if you want to be entertained, look up the application. I'm just happy my company handled the back and forth - I would have given up otherwise.

And now that I think of it both of those visas are in my old passport - I wonder if I would need new ones if I wanted to travel to either going forward?

Scratch that - no need to go to either of those places in the foreseeable future.

Caught a glimpse of RSA-Namibia game and and it was, per WITP:AE terms, the USA-Japan in 1944. The RSA physical advantage was huge and RG Snyman alone looked liked the biblical Samson.

Well that was tense!! Wales hold on against Australia and that could mean England vs Australia in the quarter final if I've read this right.....

This is turning into an over refereed world cup. That penalty in the first half against Australia's Samu Kerevi was ridiculous.
