Turn 17.

21st of August. Paris of the East.

In Romania, Germans destroy another enemy corps, but the country still doesn't surrender. We probably need to destroy one or two more in order to end Romanian resistance. It's worth noting, that the destroyed Romanian unit was in a low supply of 3. It means that destroying it, provided a National Morale boost to Germany. Our next target in the Balkans will be Serbia. The German units of Südarmee are departing from Carpathians and start moving South. The fight against the Serbs will no doubt be tough, but Austro-Hungary has just researched the infantry weapons level 1. This will provide them with a necessary punch.

In Poland Germans finally capture Warsaw! The city is often called Paris of the East, so we are glad that at least some kind of Paris has fallen into our hands...

Our forces in the West have been resting and reinforcing. In the Caucasus Russians have damaged one of our corps, but the line has held. We've started replacing corps with the detachments in the first line. This will help to limit the loses, when the main Russian offensive inevitably starts. In the Baltic Sea the raiding Russian sub has been heavily damaged. All the German navy operates in that area, so we have a crushing superiority over the the Russians, at least in that respect.

Germany and Austro-Hungary have invested heavily in strengthening the diplomatic ties with Bulgaria. We really need it's army to help garrisoning our southern flank. A land link with Ottoman Empire would be also most welcomed!

Entente Turn 17: Ivanov destroyed another Russian Infantry Corps and took Warsaw. He also destroyed a Romanian Infantry Corps. However, this was a rather good turn.

The one disadvantage to doing well in France means that Ivanov has plenty of spare German Infantry Corps to cause trouble in Poland and in Romania.

The Russian Sub gets attacked by almost the entire German Navy. The Russian Sub repeatedly dives and eventually escapes half damaged to a friendly Finnish port. At least I know that the bulk of the German Navy is in the Baltic Sea.

I am preparing to go on the offensive in East Prussia in two turns. First, I must move my newly upgraded Artillery unit into firing position.

I moving Romanian units out of Romania so that they might become Free Romanian units when Romania does surrender. With all of Ivanov’s German Infantry, I have no hope of keeping Romania. I am moving Russian and Serbian units in to replace them.

The Russian amphibious fleet sails towards Zonguldak and lands. The Detachment takes the vacant town and port with a four-point strength loss. The risky gamble paid off.

The Russians upgrade all Artillery units to Level 1. The Russians in the Caucasus repair and upgrade the Bomber to Level 1. I plan to attack in the Caucasus next turn. Russia rebuilds a destroyed Infantry Corps.

The Serbs thin their line to send units to Romania.

An Austrian Sub somehow appeared and sailed off into the Mediterranean. I will now have to form a French Seaplane Carrier/Destroyer Group in the Mediterranean. I will likely need to build some French Motor Torpedo Boats for ASW purposes. I need the Destroyers for deep ocean Sub hunts.

A repaired and ASW upgraded French Dreadnought in Southern France carefully sails towards the Aegean Sea as I don’t know where that Austrian Sub is. I used a French Sub to spot a safe path.

The UK units in Egypt shift positions to be better supplied and to repair the Cavalry.

Mesopotamia is stable. A UK Detachment from Egypt disembarks in Mesopotamia to free up the Cavalry Corp to liberate Southern Arab towns.

The two UK U-Boat Hunting Groups returned to England to upgrade to Level 2 ASW. I will form three Seaplane Carrier/Destroyer Groups to hunt U-Boats. Other UK ships upgrade to Level 2 ASW.

The French built the last Heavy Artillery unit.

Serbia invests one diplomatic point into the Netherlands. The Netherlands moves 17% towards the Entente. Germany takes a huge continuous MPP loss (around 60 MPP’s) and a continuous National Morale Point hit when the Netherlands actually becomes pro-Entente. Norway moves 5% towards the Entente, which should shut down the Norwegian Convoy to Germany. So far, the Diplomatic war is going well.

The Russians invest one more point in Gas/Shell Production. Serbian invests one more point in Trench Warfare.

Russian achieves Level 1 in Air Warfare. The UK achieves a Level in Industrial Production. Now the UK will get more MPP’s!

Turn 18.

8th of September. Black Sea, red blood.

Bad news from the diplomatic front. Netherlands have swung towards Entente and Norway is already pro-British, depraving Germany of it's imports. According to the reports, only the Brits invested 200 MMP in the diplomacy, so it's an equivalent of 4 diplomatic chits. At the same time, Central powers invested 5 chits in Bulgaria, but it resulted only in 5% swing towards our side. Emergency 4 chits of Turkey and Austro-Hungary have been invested in Netherlands. The loss of their imports would hurt German National Morale. German NM stands currently at 93% but the AH morale is at 37%. Russian NM finally falls below 100% after the capture of Warsaw...

In Romania the German forces practically split the country in half, but it still refuses to surrender:

In Poland the armies of Hindenburg and Mackensen grind forward. Despite of the loss of Warsaw, there's no significant change in Russian deployment. Obviously some proto Stalin gave them a no retreat order. So the Russian soldiers are dying defending the mud and dust.

The deployment of German units against Serbia continues. An attack there will commence in two turns.

The Western front is quiet. Only our fighter aces deal heavy loses to the French fighter, while escorting the airships on a recon mission.

On the Black Sea front, Russians invaded the Ottoman port of Zonguldak. While all the locations on the Mediterranean coast are already garrisoned to prevent any British invasion, the northern port was still unoccupied. A newly built Ottoman garrison was already on the way there. It would be much worst, if the Russians disembarked somewhere in the rear of our Caucasus front, coordinating this action, with the main land offensive. An isolated landing in Zonguldak will be dealt with accordingly. A reserve corps from the capital area and a detachment that was destined to garrison the port, moved against the landing. First the Ottoman corps under command of Liman von Sanders attacked an enemy battleship in the port. Next turn we will attack the landing force directly.

Entente Turn 18: Ivanov destroyed another Russian and a Romanian Infantry Corps. If it weren’t for the great Entente tech advances, this would have been a rather depressing turn.

The Russian Baltic Sea Fleet hides in ports. There are no spare MPP’s left to repair them.

The Russian Artillery is upgraded and in position. I will go on the offensive in East Prussia next turn.

I checked the beta copy of the manual and discovered to my surprise that Romania won’t surrender until all Romanian cities and towns have been taken. I must therefore hold at least one Romanian town as long as possible.

The Zonguldak invasion was a disaster. Ivanov had reaction forces nearby. My Pre-war Dreadnought was badly damaged by an Ottoman Infantry Corps while in port. I had to transport out the damaged Detachment before the port became unusable. I scouted with my Russian Sub and avoided a naval ambush of my Pre-war Dreadnought, on the way home to a safe port. Well played, Ivanov.

The Caucasus Offensive almost destroyed an Ottoman Infantry Corps. Russia builds an upgraded Artillery unit.

Ivanov’s advances in Poland might activate Bulgaria, despite the Serbs holding Belgrade. I moved spare Serbian and Romanian units to cover the Bulgarian Front.

The French Seaplane Carrier/Destroyer Group has almost assembled in the Mediterranean. However, I don’t know where that Austrian Sub went.

An Entente Fleet is ready to engage any Ottoman ships that venture out into the Aegean Sea.

In Egypt, the UK Haig HQ has almost reached Nekel for supply purposes. The UK repairs the damaged UK Cavalry. I need UK Artillery Level 1 to attack.

Mesopotamia is stable. A UK Detachment from Egypt marches North in Mesopotamia to free up the Cavalry Corp to liberate Southern Arab towns.

All UK Seaplane Carriers, Destroyers and Motor Torpedo Boats have upgraded or upgraded to Level 2 ASW. I will go U-Boat hunting next turn. Three UK Dreadnoughts upgrade to Level 2 ASW.

France invests one diplomatic point into Norway and four points into the Netherlands. The UK invests one diplomatic point into Norway. If Norway swings 20% to Entente, a Norwegian MPP convoy line is established to the UK. I am hoping for more quick diplomatic advances.

UK and French Fighters routinely get mauled in air combat. It appears that Ivanov has achieved a high level of Advanced Fighters (maybe Level 3?). The Russians and the French invest one more point in Advanced Fighters. The UK invests two points into Advanced Fighters and one more point into Air Warfare.

France achieves Level 1 in Heavy Artillery! France will be able to attack in two or three turns. Russia achieves Level 1 in Advanced Fighters. Serbia achieves Level 2 in Trench Warfare. There were additional tech advances, but I couldn’t get them all written down in time.

Turn 19

18th of September. Conquest and plunder.

No news from the diplomatic front. Austro-Hungarian morale is at 37% and drops 1-3% per turn.

Tremendous news came from the Western Front. After the heaviest artillery barrage of this war, German forces capture the mighty fortress of Verdun. It will be interesting to see, the French reaction to this. All depends on quality and quantity of Entente's artillery.

A combined German Austro-Hungarian force is finally poised to attack Serbia. The mediocre k.u.k commander Oskar Potiorek has been finally sacked for this occasion. Note the upgraded k.u.k infantry units. Germany still hasn't researched the infantry weapons level 1. Still, their units have higher morale and readiness, thanks to higher levels in command/control and infantry warfare, tech categories.

Romania finally surrenders! Germany conquers the country pluders 300 MPP. We are going to spend it on some nice things - bombers or mountain corps, we think. The Romanians are going to pay for that!

In the Caucasus our line holds, but Russian superiority is significant. In the long term, the only hope is to create and land bridge to Turkey through Bulgaria. Then maybe send some Germans with the artillery there. That's why buying a mountain corps with Romanian money could be a good idea. We shall see...

Entente Turn 19: Ivanov destroyed another Russian, Romanian and French Infantry Corps. Verdun was lost and Romania surrendered. A Romanian Detachment and Cavalry Corps became Free Romanians. Overall, it wasn’t a great turn for the Entente.

Russian ships hide in ports. There are no spare MPP’s left to repair them.

The Russian offensive in East Prussia seriously damaged an elite German Infantry Corps. I was hoping to destroy it.

I am moving Russian units and the Free Romanian Detachment to create a defensive line in Eastern Romania.

The Russian Caucasus Offensive destroyed an Ottoman Detachment. Russia builds an Infantry Corps.

The Serbs shift units around to create a supply line into Western Romania and to better match units to HQ’s.

The Austrian Sub was surprised by the French Dreadnought in the Aegean Sea. The nearby French Seaplane Carrier sails in and damages it. Three French Destroyers sail towards the Sub.

The UK forces In Egypt are in position. I need UK Artillery Level 1 to attack.

Mesopotamia is stable. A UK Detachment from Egypt relieves the Cavalry Corp which moves South to eventually liberate some Southern Arab towns.

The UK continues to repair and ASW upgrade ships for the Blockade Lines.

One UK Seaplane Carrier/Destroyers Group patrols the North Atlantic Convoy Line. Another group patrols the Atlantic Indian Convoy Line. One more group is in reserve at the Northern tip of Scotland.

The French, Russians and UK invest one more point in Gas/Shell Production. The UK invests one point in Naval Weapons. The French invest one further point in Industrial Production and in Advanced Fighters. A screen shot shows the current Entente Research Table.

The UK achieves Trench Warfare Level 3 and Level 1 Production Tech.

The war is over!

With today's game release, the beta game version we've been using during this AAR, has become obsolete and we cannot continue the match on the PBEM++ server. I hope you've enjoyed this AAR and that we've managed to highlight some interesting game features and possible strategies. Note, that some things have changed since we started playing. For example the impact of the Italian decision on Austro Hungary won't be so severe. This morning, when I still could access the game, I regrouped a little the Ottoman forces in the Caucasus. In the Balkans, Central Powers captured Belgrade. The main damage was done by the Germans, but the city was captured by the k.u.k corps. Rejoicing in the dual monarch was enormous! Russians attacked East Prussia, so my plan was to stop the offensive in Poland and move one HQ, artillery and few corps to the north. Hopefully the Germans would be able to conquer the Baltic region. After the conquest of Romania, attack would continue North, from Moldavia deep into Russian rear in the Ukraine. The offensive against Serbia would continue for as long as possible. If the Entente attacked in the West, Germans from Serbia would redeploy to the Western Front and hopefully the k.u.k would be able to finish off the Serbs. If Bulgaria joined the war, maybe it would be even possible to send some forces to support Ottoman Empire? Otherwise it would collapse. That's all from me folks, see you in the trenches.
