I am curious about the following concerning Tacview.

Does it work with ground forces?

Will the display improve? Meaning more life like objects and terrain.

Can the objects be modded?

For those who are using it, do you find it useful and enjoyable?

There are those that will enjoy it. Me, I find the enhanced map views to be far more involving than what Tacview offers so far.

Agreed. Its built to be a flight simulator combat AAR system. It was initially chosen to satisfy a request for more 3D situational awareness for flight and air combat for professional users. Its much less useful for naval surface warfare and even less so for ground combat.

Well I'm new to it - I'm mainly just curious what it can do with CMO and I'm liking it so far.

However I'm also a flightsimmer and I probably wouldn't have got it if it were only for CMO - it works with several flightsims too.

I bought the steambundle cmo and tac view and now it doesn't work. I selected tacviewcommand manager in game options, but still nothing. I get the message that I selected an invalid path to tacview. Anyone?

Now, you'll have to find the path before \steamapps, (default would be c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam, I think?) as you probably don't put your Steam stuff on D: like I do, but if you find the steamapps\common folder, you should be good to go.

Also, I had to launch Tacview on its own once, to get the prereqs done on it the first time.

Also, I hate to ask...did you *install* Tacview Advanced after buying it? It's a separate package. Steam calls it Software, not a Game.

Hoeist6634 told it was a Bundle, so yes - it is Advanced version of Tacview.

1) What type of OS are you using? Because if you're using Windows 7, then you probably need this update to be installed: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4716999
2) In CMO options, in 'Tacview' tab, you should link not a Manager but Tacview .EXE file: tacview.exe or tacview64.exe, depending on what OS you have - 32 or 64bit.

Hope this'll help. Good luck.

I am curious about the following concerning Tacview.

Does it work with ground forces? The 3d view does show some ground units. I have seen tanks, APCs, and AD units

Will the display improve? Meaning more life-like objects and terrain. The terrain is possible. Units are not currently textured and my guess would be a major code/engine change to go that way and the performance of both programs would suffer. Tacview is running alongside a major CPU/GPU hog in most cases and needs to be as lean as possible to keep any lag from occurring.

Can the objects be modded? There are already folks adding in more 3d models. Not Workshopped ATM. The objective is low poly counts.

For those who are using it, do you find it useful and enjoyable? Personally, it's a double-edged sword. The 3d view is cool to watch and see things maneuver, but currently, the 3d view sees everything. No fog of war. There is a feature request for FOW in the vote for new features thread.

I hope that helps.

I have a question for you: I have neither TacView nor any flight sims, but I all of the flight sims I'm aware of are full, hi-res 3D...so what exactly does TacView add to flight sims?

In certain flight sims, you get a very good battlefield view of how the action played with traces and detailed data labels. Its like real combat pilots would use to critique performance and tactics in a battle. If you are into flight simming, its a great tool.

In CMO, it provides a 3d representation of the battle in real-time. Its kind of neat. It gives the devs a little short cut to some 3d capabilities a few players wanted. IMO, it was interesting for about 10 minutes and then I turned it off.

Tacview isn't something I run all the time, but I get a better view of the battle sometimes. Just depends what's going on.

Yes, if you really wanted to ....

But the models will still act as they do in CMO - only the visuals would change.

But my understanding is that the AAR function is not enabled for CMO, correct? Odd that the flight sims can use it, unless people are also referring to "professional" versions of the flight sims.

A big part of it is that CMO doesn't have an AAR function like a flight sim. IMO, its recorder is a lot cruder and not built to show the same level of granular time slices as an ACMI file from a flight sim. The flight sim only has to record details from less than 100 units. CMO is being pushed to operate with thousands of units, and some cases the units are more detailed as a flight sim's units. So the replay feature in CMO tends to have less granular capabilities.

BTW, thats not saying CMO can't use tacview with the recorder. I'm just saying its not as useful or as straightforward as some people dropping sample code on the forum think.
