I have begun to think that ‘Artillery’ is a pro-Allied optional rule. It possibly adds one turn to the German conquest of France. And though the Germans have ‘guns’ too, the utility of the French AA/AT is worth quite a bit more. Not having anti-tank assets in the clear hex with the HQ was a grave tactical mistake, particularly if there is one such in Lille. The French ARM should have been in that hex too.

Turn 5. May/June 1940. End of Turn. Reserve Pools.

The important take aways are:

(1) Germany has 1 reserve pilot, but no quality reserve fighter airframes. However, as you shall see Germany will use this reserve pilot to fill the second of two new fighter airfames arriving next turn.

(2) France has 1 reserve pilot, which can be used to fill either the reserve fighter (D510) or fighter/bomber (Potez 631) airframe.

(3) CW has 3 reserve pilots, but no quality reserve fighter airframes.

Turn 5. May/June 1940. End of Turn. Production Spiral. CW.

Won't be for two turns until the RAF will be able to field additional (new) fighter units. Hopefully, the Battle for France will be over then.

The CW will use their Polish pilots to deploy their old CVLs to kill U-Boats with. &/Or their often potent collection of cheap NAVs.

Soviet Asia. Japanese Manchuria.

{Looks like trouble's brewing in Soviet Asia. No doubt in my mind for a while that he's (i.e., the USSR) is planning to surprise and attack Japan.

Maybe a preemptive DOW by Japan on the USSR?

I plan to have the axis move first if they win the initiative (currently at 0 on the initiative w/allies winning ties). I know this isn't good for the long-term but I may even go so far as to ask for a re-roll if the axis lose the first roll. There's only a 45% chance of winning the first roll. And if the axis lose and request a re-roll (+1 for the allies on the initiative) that chance drops to 36%.}

Turn 6. July/August 1940. Start of Turn. Initiative.

[ax] Initiative.
D10(Axis)=5, D10(Allied)=10.
Allies win first roll 10 to 5.

[ax] Axis are pondering whether or not to request a re-roll.

[ax] I know it's probably not good long term strategy but the axis do request a re-roll.

[ax] Initiative. Re-roll.
D10(axis)=3, D10(allied)=9.
Allies win second roll 9+1=10 to 3.
I assume you wish to move first?

[al] You've assumed correctly. I do wish to go first.

[ax] Turn 6. July/August 1940. Allied #1. Weather=6. Fine everywhere except for storms in the north monsoon.

Weather.

Turn 6. July/August 1940. Allied #1.

[al] Allied Impulse 1

[al] Declarations of War
No declarations or war.
(No alignments or other stuff, either.)

{Phew ... I thought for sure that the USSR was going to declare war on Japan. I'm not sure why he didn't. But, I'll give serious consideration to a preemptive DOW by Japan on the USSR in my next impulse}

[al] Impulses
- USSR & CW combined
- France & China land
- US pass

[al] No port attacks or naval air.

[al] Naval Movement

- Task force out of Plymouth, HMS Glorious, Queen Elizabeth, Royal Oak, Royal Sovereign, Newcastle & York, sails to 3 box North Sea.
- Soviet cruiser Voroshilov sails from Vladivostok to 4 box Japanese Coast.

[al] No need to ask for strat bomb CAP, since there won't be any.

[al] Do the Axis want to CAP for groundstrikes?

[ax] Negative.

[al] Ground Strikes
RAF atr3s strike Boulogne.
- LXII Corps (7-4 INF): 9 miss
- LII Corps (6-6 MECH): 4 miss
- PzJag I sp at: 8 miss

{Well that was fortunate for the axis}

[al] Rail Moves
- Marseiiles MIL rails to Paris
- USSR rails HQ Yeremenko from Ulan-Ude to along frontier with Manchuria (stacked with cavalry divison)

[al] Land Moves

- 2 Red Army land moves from Chita towards frontier
- 39th Army (6-4 INF) moves out of Blagovyeshchensk and stacks with HQ Zhukov.

- Cape Town MIL begins the advance up the coast of Italian Somaliland.
- 2nd infanry division leaves Alexandria and stacks with II Corps (7-3 INF) in the Egyptian desert.

[al] No land attacks.

[al] Rebases
- USSR rebases planes from Ulan-Ude and Chita towards frontier with Manchuria, and rebases Pe-2 from Blagovyeshchensk to adjacent hex (stacked with Siberians).
- MB 152 in Vichy rebases to Paris.

Turn 6. July/August 1940. Axis #2. Pre-Impulse. Western Front.

Wow ... interesting. This is going to be a long turn so at least on the Western Front there's no need to rush or take any risks. This impulse I plan to take what my opponent has given me and he's give me a lot.

(1) Lille (defended only by the French Paris MIL).
(2) RP southeast of Lille.
(3) 2 most southern Maginot line hexes.
(4) Breakthrough due south out of the Arennes (defended only by the Metz MIL).
(5) Exhaust French interceptors (i.e., fighters).

I will be able to achieve (1)-(4) this with 0 risk.

(5) The French have 3 fighters and 1 land bomber. The Germans and Italian will make 3 ground strikes in the hopes of drawing out and exhausting the French fighters, and maybe even flipping some French units as a bonus.)

Turn 6. July/August 1940. Axis #2. Pre-Impulse. Eastern Libya. Egypt.

Well, Balbo and his forces have overstayed their welcome in this part of the world. Unfortunately for Balbo, the Italians weren't able to reorganize him due to supply issues. Too bad for Balbo. The Italians plan to evacuate the gun division and infantry corps stacked with him. The evacuation will be dangerous but as the Italians I'm ready to concede eastern Libya. It's time to save what I can.

Turn 6. July/August 1940. Axis #2.

[ax] Uncle Joe in Asia has got me a bit worried.

[al] Does he now?

[al] (I was hoping to accompany that with an innocent whistling emoji/simley, but couldn't find one.)

[ax] It was definitely implied. :(

[ax] Rules question, if I may please.

[al] Sure.

[ax] What's the consequence to Japan if they don't have enough CP's in the Japanese Coast to fulfill their trade agreement with the USA?

[al] Japan has to have 0 cps in the Japanese Coast (otherwise they can still ship the build point). Should that situation arise, the US may keep its resources & oil for its own use, and the US draws 2 entry markers and places them in the Japan entry pool.

[ax] Thanks.

[ax] Japanese intel estimates that that vary situation is one of your objectives of an impending "sneak" attack by the USSR against the Japanese.

[al] Any shortfall short of hitting 0 cps, and Japan will lose out on resources/oil, but it won't be defaulting on the trade agreement. (The US won't be in default unless it's short cps somewhere.)

[ax] If memory serves you have 7-chits in the Japanese entry pool. A surprise DOW by the USSR against Japan would cost you at most 2 chits (70% chance) and at best (for you) 1 chit (30% chance).

[al] Sounds about right.

[ax] I'm not too happy about what I'm going to do with the Japanese ...

[al] I don't know whether I should be excited or concerned. :)

[ax] Well, I'm definitely concerned but I don't see any alternative.

[ax] Japan declares war on the Soviet Union.

[ax] There ... I said it. :)

[al] We'll say... I'll be both. (I was kind of hoping to bait out some sort of response before going to war myself. But now it's come to it... well, I guess it's too late for cold feet. 😉)

[ax] Exactly.

[ax] Japan DOW's the Soviet Union.
USE=1, 1-chit added.
Chit roll[0,365]=14=>1-value.

[ax] Assume the Soviets with to call out their reserves.

[al] Correct.

[ax] Where to place?

[ax] Of course the two MIL's go in their own city.

[ax] This leaves the 22nd inf army, 1st Siberians and 3rd cav corps.

[al] - 22nd Army (4-3 INF) to Minsk
- 1st Siberians Corps to Blagoyevshchensk
- 3rd Cavalry Corps to Khabarovsk

[ax] It's done. Now begins the war that the Japanese didn't want but started in order to preempt any Soviet surprise attack against them.

Soviet Reserves.

Instructions?

[al] Albacore in Belfast reacts to 0 box, please.

[ax] Albacore (Belfast) reacts to 0-box.
Italy commits her sub group.
Search. Italy=2, RN=1. Both find.
Assume you want a naval air?

[al] Yes, please.

[ax] You have 3 SP's, 2 of which I use to increase Italian risk from D to D, 2A.
D=9, failed. Italian sub aborted back to La Spezia.
No Italian subs left which closes out the action in the Bay of Biscay.

Bay of Biscay.

Turn 6. July/August 1940. Axis #2. (continued)

[ax] West Med. Italian lone CA, Zara, in the 4-box initiates.
Italy. No air reactions.

[ax] CW. No air reactions possible.

[ax] West Med.
Air reactions. Italy has none and CW can't react any.
Search. Italy=6, CW=6. Neither find.

[ax] Well, this entire impulse was a bust for the Italian navy and it's still not (potentially) over. Italy chooses not to initiate in the East Med.

West Med.

Turn 6. July/August 1940. Axis #2. (continued)

[ax] Japanese Coast.

[al] Doesn't look good for Voroshilov.

[ax] I certainly hope not.

[ax] Though she has a 50/50 chance of evading detection.

[ax] Japan initiates with CA Mikuma.
Search. Japan=5, USSR=10.
Japanese carrier planes barley find the lone Soviet heavy cruiser Voroshilov.
Because of the surprise the Japanese get 15 surprise points.

[al] I... don't think there are going to be any survivors. 😨

[ax] The Japanese decide to fight a gun battle. Japanese admirals still believe that naval guns are more lethal than carrier air. And this battle won't dispel that myth either.

[ax] 12 SP's are used to increase USSR risk from D, 2A to 2X, which ensures that the CA Voroshilov will be blow out of the water.
2 SP's are used to reduce Japanese risk from A to no effect.

[ax] Thus ends the lopsided battle of the Japanese Coast. The result of which reinforcements the myth that carrier planes are best used for observation for the navy's big guns.

[ax] Formality.
1st of 2 X's on CA Voroshilov=9, damaged.
2nd X=5, sunk and then sunk some more.

Japanese Coast.
