CW launches two port attacks:
- CVPs in Eastern Med fly to Tripoli to have another go at the stranded cp
- CVPs in North Sea fly to Kiel to have another go at the old BBs

{Interesting. Both fly which means he no longer has fighter cover to defend against a Port Strike against Plymouth which has two RN transports parked there. Though, my be is that he'll move them out to sea.}

CW has 2 surprise, which they won't spend (see Note below).
Germans don't have enough AA to have any effect.
CW inflicts 1D, 3A on the Germans.

With 3As, Schleswig-Holstein can't help but be aborted. (The rolls are 10 and then 7.)
Very fine damage control by the Kriegsmarine crews.

Libya Port Attack
Surprise rolls Italy 3, CW 2
CW has 2 surprise points (this is legit, since the CW is in the 4 box and the Italians, being in a minor port, are in the 3 box).
No AA fire.
CW base damage inflicted on the cp is 2D 1A, which CW boosts to 1X.
The cp is sunk.

Note
Something seems fishy about the surprise results in the Kiel port attack. By my reckoning, as a major port Kiel has a box number of 5. Because of the CVP searching optional, the CW planes have a box number of 4 (i.e. they are treated as being in the 4 box). With that in mind, the Germans' surprise number ought to have been 10, not 8 - so there should have been no net surprise points. Given that, I've elected not to spend any of the CW surprise points in Kiel.

My intention all along has been to declare Vichy. However, I've tried to give the impression that I was going for the complete conquest of France in order to draw French forces away from the Germans. For example, the two German mountain units moving through the German/French alps are intended to give the impression that I plan to make a push into France from the Italian-Franco border.

I couldn't be happier about the number of French forces my opponent has down in Vichy and away from the main battle area. I'm sure glad he didn't call my bluff. Otherwise, the Battle of France would have been much more difficult than it has been already. And even at that there's still a lot of work to be done to capture Paris. I'm not sure I can get the city this turn. At a minimum I need to cut off and surround Paris and adjacent French forces from the rest of France and, most significantly, from the oil needed to reorg French HQ's and other other oil consuming units in the pocket I hope to create.

There's a 10% chance that this will be my last impulse of the turn. I hope that's not the case, but I will try to create that pocket this impulse just in case.

[al] Ends up being some serious overkill, but my thinking was that if I hadn't committed HQ support the attack would have been a lot more questionable had Japanese ground support got through.

With shore bombardment, HQ support, and ground support, the combats are +24.5 in Manchuria and +21.333 in Egypt. Axis gets to choose the combat table, so I choose assault by default, but with those die roll modifiers, the result is automatically -/2S for both combats.

[al] Just for the record, the die rolls are:
- Tsitsihar: fractional roll 368 (success); combat roll 5 (!!) + 25 = 30.
- Egypt: fractional roll 75 (success); combat roll 14 + 22 = 36.

The Red Army very nearly botches its first attack of the game. Only the fact that it's made with overwhelming force against hapless Manchurian territorial levies allows it to be a great success.

[al] Rebases
- RAF rebases Hampden lnd3 from Alexandria to Aden.
- French L.298 nav2 rebases from Senagal to Accra, Gold Coast.
- USSR rebases ftr2s in Manchuria and Pe-8/TB-7 lnd4 from Chita to in and around Tsitsihar.

If you want to have a reasonably strong Vichy to defend southern France for you, keep them on the map. If you plan to collapse Vichy in the future, kill them...

But always: don't risk losing your own units...

Thanks! I'm not wanting to collapse Vichy and see the advantage in having a strong Vichy. So, I will walk lightly, kill off the weak MIL holding Paris, capture that city and declare Vichy.

By not killing off and then using the surviving French army to defend Vichy seems to represent French collaboration with their nazi occupiers. Makes sense.

Orders from OKH go out to OKW, OKL, OKM and all field army commands not to inflict unnecessary casualties on the remaining French forces except for what is necessary to capture Paris.

{I'm soliciting suggestions on how I should view/proceed with US entry data. We're playing solitary so obviously I could, but don't want to/try not to look at the chit values. I just want to "look at" the options chosen and the number of chits in each of the four pools. Does anyone have an algorithm I could use to plug the information I (should only) have into that will give me estimates of entry & tension pool totals and allied DOW chances? In this way I hope to use the estimates and avoid the actual for making preemptive DOW decisions. Also, I'm open to all suggestions on approaches to "honestly" dealing with the US entry as the axis player, playing against an opponent using solitary mode.}

[al] First off, where do you want the mtn div to go? Anywhere within 2 hexes is legal.

[ax] For all axis units that must be relocated please just use your best judgement as if you were axis player. That'll work for me.
