I'm not that worried about the immediacy of Palembang itself. Securing the areas around it will take priority. Airpower will be applied to keep its airfields at 100. We'll get there when we get there; I had planned for PH falling a lot earlier. If I could do it again, I'd secure Lahaina immediately with better planning for support troops, base troops, and AKEs to then continuously bombard PH.

Isn't that last post meant for your John III AAR? If not, I'm really confused about what's going on in this game.

Latest attack at Pearl. We now have the capability to do daily continuous bombardment with CAs from Lahaina. In other news, CV Junyo just arrived on the scene, we rushed her a little to transfer the shipyard points ASAP to another CV, we also are desperate for additional air power to help with the push into the DEI. Elements of KB and battleships have returned or are returning to Tokyo to help with a heavy push on the Dutch, where we have fallen behind. Singapore fell a few days ago. It is early February. 5-6 slow BB's are very damaged in PH's port.

This game is called as of 3/16/42 game time; I think I can post since Sean graciously conceded. He's a good opponent, just time got away from him.

From my seat, the main issue game-wise is that the landing at Pearl was a very risky gamble that failed. Other than some xAKs with supply, I didn't get anything into Pearl, but the troops were still holding on, though in terrible shape. It was close for awhile, but we managed to hold on vs. the equivalent of 9 divisions attacking the place.

Pearl is just too tough a nut; there are 2 US Divisions, plus Marine Def Bns, Combat Engineers, and other units, and a ton of engineers that require round the clock bombing/bombardment to prevent fort building. There are tons of CD guns that will sink 1 or 2 transports out of every TF that lands troops or supplies (though they are pretty useless vs. shore bombardments). A ton of mines too.

I was about to hit the bombarding surface ships with all my CVs, which I think would've succeeded, because his CV were almost all in the DEI, and I didn't see many Naval Bombers at Lahaina. I had some supply convoys to bring more supplies, though Pearl still had 95K at end, so not yet critical.

Those IJA troops I think were kind of stranded, lifting them off would've been risky and expensive, and the whole game was basically done because this gambit didn't work.

So, don't invade Pearl would be my advice for anyone!!!!

If he would have captured Hawaii first, built up both bases there while also working on the other islands, you would have lost at Oahu. Someone did just that to someone in an AAR. I don't remember who was playing, however, as it was some time ago.

It might be possible to besiege Pearl that way, but I still don't think it can be taken. This was BTS where the Empire gets a whole bunch of extra divisions to use, and it still didn't work.

It also begs the question what next after Pearl

Portland would be next if it is under defended. Or bomb/bombard all resource centers along the west coast. Or both. Think of the VPs. If manpower hits can destroy factories, that is also an option. Someone did try to take San Diego but failed. He also besieged Los Angles.

An invasion of Canada land would also make things difficult, especially if there is an HR where restricted American units could not go into Canada land.

I've seen Pearl taken a couple of times (I believe in a stock scenario, though). RangerJoe is correct on the procedure--take a nearby base and do a lot of shore bombarding. I think it helps to have the KB as well so as to keep reinforcements and supply at bay. BTS may be a tougher nut regarding what starts on Pearl, though.

Cheers,
CB

I thought of that, and did make a few preparations. I put US Troops at Victoria to control the straits, and also moved Regt to Astoria to guard the CD guns at the mouth of the Columbia River. I think it's possible to bomb the US from Canada, but I don't think Portland and/or Tacoma are takeable. On BTS without withdrawls, there are several US Infantry Divisions on the US West Coast; I had 2 divisions in Portland that were dug-in and 100% prepped. And that's after taking out the CD guns in Astoria. The US has alot of air units, tons of flak and engineers, and of course unlimited supplies. I just don't see it unless a player is negligent.

A player was negligent and lost Portland in one game. A couple of people tried to pick up the pieces but it was difficult.

I wonder, if you lose the CVEs, can you buy back the associated air groups?? Or are they lost as well?
