Is there an advantage to keeping air groups together? Ie., Keeping the same Pursuit Group 18PG/20PS with its sister squadron 18PG/21PS together at the same base? Does this help them fly coordinated missions? Right now I have my squadrons spread all over the Pacific... Thanks. [Edit Spelling]

No, there is no intrinsic advantage to keep squadrons of the same air group together, other than ease of organisation. What counts is that the air units at the same base belong to the same Air HQ. Ideally the Air HQ should be in command range of the base or even better at the same base as well. See https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2382494

After getting through the first few hectic months as the Allies against the AI I do like to keep the groups together or at least in the same neighborhood for 'historical' feel. It's been a while since I fired it up but IIRC some squadrons come later as reinforcements, and even though they are from the same group, are assigned to different HQs. A bit odd.

Some of us are just sticklers for organization and will work to keep elements together regardless of any in-game advantages.

I form Marine Expeditionary Units consisting all like numbered units such as:

1st Marine Division
1st marine Artillery Battalion
1st Marine Tank Battalion
1st Pioneer Battalion
later adding:
1st Amphibious Tank Battalion

and so on as new 1st numbered Marine units come on line.

I do this for as many of the Marine Divisions as have like numbered support units.

My invasions are the epitome of aesthetic beauty.

With respect to the OPs question, I work to move air units in Groups not Squadrons whenever possible and work to keep Groups together.

Does this give me any game advantage? Absolutely not.

Some might even claim adherence to such rigidity a fatal flaw, but I would counter that a guy who works the details to such as degree to ensure these units are in the same place at the same time is demonstrating a masterful competence in long range planning and organizational movement.

It adds to the flavor of the game which equates to enjoyment of the game.

Perhaps that organizational perfection comes with experience....at my current expertise at the game Im having a hard enough time just figuring out things like, "Where is Pago Pago?" and "Hmmm, probably should have thought to send out a replenshment TF with that air combat TF....Im guessing having 3 US Carriers run out of Fuel near Baker Is. is not a good thing in Jan '42?"

Thanks.

A lot of success in organization and logistics has much to do with experience and familiarity.

Once familiarity comes in the form of not only knowing where Pago Pago is, but recognizing it's value as a supply/fuel hub, or at least as a weigh station much success can follow.

The AI doesn't typically assail Pago Pago, while some Japanese players might. This leads me to use it in AI games as a main weigh station for ships headed to SoPAC.

If you want to sail your carriers around without making port calls, its best to tether them to a replenishment TF consisting of AOs. It's even better to recognize the need to distribute fuel to places like Christmas Island so you have a gas station proximate to your patrol area at Baker.

Yes, all of this comes with experience. Many of us veteran players have tens of thousands of game turns under our belts.

This is what it's all about, Hans! Anything that gives you more enjoyment from this great game is a good thing.

As Hans said, the biggest advantage is to avoid the organizational nightmare that is working with the Allied LCUs.. so easy to forget about x, y or z unit left and forgotten on a small island
