I'm looking for a WW2 flight simulator that has a broad selection of planes to fly and good 3D graphics. Also, I would like 3rd person view while flying. Does anyone know of any good games that fit this description?

Thank in advance.

This is not part of the Great Battles series, but you can get the feel of what IL-2 Sturmovik is all about at a cheap price...

Many thanks, Red 2112. Do those games have a fairly large selection of planes you can fly? Also, can you fly bombers in them? The reason I ask is that I was thinking of doing Advanced Tactics Gold subformation icons using screenshots of a game like that, at least for air subformations.

There are some, but not many of them. MMOs would be War Thunder while others mostly single/multiplay.

IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946, isn't bad. Got campaign built into it. Can even fly Japan too. I seen a few on Steam, but mostly on arcade styles.

If you wanna browse on Steam, best way to do it is tag WW2 then add simulation, that will narrow it down abit, so wouldn't have to spend all day looking for them. There are so much junks on Steam.

IL2 1946 with the 'BAT' mods will have you flying from 1910 until now with tons of real and experimental planes. It is a lot of downloads, they have torrents, but well worth it.

The IL-2 CoD Blitz Edition (link posted above on sale), is the "fixed" CoD modded official version. At that price, it canīt really be beat, aside from IL-2 1946. Both are classics inside the flight simulation communinity.

Yes, especially if you donīt know about avionics and flight model/envelope. There are modes in the sim that you can ajust, like easy mode were prop torque is not in play for example. Itīs easy to get into a spin in hard mode, so yes some knowledge is needed. But as said, you can just set it all to easy mode and have fun aswell. Joystick is a must though. But, if you like the subject, itīs easier to get into. I for one always liked aviation as a kid, so I love all this stuff and enjoy learning it. Same goes for WW2, Cold War etc.

Well, the poster did ask about a simulator and not a game.

Joystick is a must though.

Thrustmaster T.16000M is a fine joystick for relatively cheap price without significant problems. Has a good number of axis and buttons and can be switched for left-hand. Cheaper joysticks tend to have problems, like unlinear response and/or it don't center reliably. Logitech Extreme 3D Pro has both of these problems.

I have both of the aforementioned 'sticks, two of the Logitech ones (same problems in both of them). What 'sticks do you others have and what are your experiences with them?

Nope, itīs monted on a PVC plumbing pipe, then fixed to base that locks to the frame of my custom bus chair

Iīll post a pic ASAP of my invention, sort of.

Underneath the wooden base is a guide that snaps to the front frame of the seat frame, so I can put the joystick between my legs and have it stay still. This was very useful for me when I was in a acrobatic team in DCS. The chair is a bus seat that I got from a junk yard, I then made a metalic frame for it and fixed it to the seat, most comfortable chair you can have for long hours of tranning or flight simming....
