Quick question: historically during Operation Barbarossa, the Nazis had reached Leningrad, Moscow and Rostov by the end of 1941; is an advance this fast possible against a competent MP opponent?

I'm asking because I've never managed to advance this quickly into the Soviet Union and have the sneaking suspicion that the reason is because maybe I'm to hesitant in my offensives.

Second Question, how do I restart the offensive after the Soviets have stalled me? it's 1944 now and due to strategic bombing and constant allied Naval invasions all my offensives into the USSR have stalled due to a lack of units and money. The soviets have even started counter attacking to a degree. Do you have any advice? I'm running out of ideas...

Played a fair amount against the computer and humans, and I've never been able to match the historical pace that the Wehrmacht set in the summer of 41 either. According to my trusty friend The West Point Atlas of War, Army Group Center had gotten to Minsk by July 1 and Smolensk by July 16 (I think that's only two game turns). Given the game map and the movement allowances, I think that is literally impossible to match unless you face no opposition at all. On the other hand, I have found that it's possible to reach the objectives that the Axis had taken by December 41...not that this is necessarily desirable.

The battle for Russia is typically won (or lost) in 42 or 43. Several times, I've assumed, as the Allied player, that I'm safe because my Axis opponent has not come close to achieving the historical territorial gains of '41, only to be slaughtered the following spring and summer.

Regarding your second question, you might be able to do some local counterattacks especially if you concentrate several of your more experienced units (I assume by '44 that tech is about equal). Try to build up a reserve just beyond spotting range, let your opponent commit to an attack and then counter when he's weakened. But by this point in the game (I'm also assuming that you did not take Britain or Egypt), it's very unlikely that you will be able to start up a general offensive in the East

thanks Helsingor!

I did take Egypt in 43, but the Suez forms a choke point I would need reinforcements to break through, so I have stopped my units there. Is it worth diverting resources away from Europe and Russia to break through into the middle east? I think Great Britain is weak at the moment but it would probably still take a while to break through the choke point. What's your advice?

Always tricky to give advice in the abstract, but I think your instinct to "stand pat" at the Suez is probably correct. Supply gets dicey for the Axis in the Near East (unless you've gotten Turkey on your side) and it's very easy for the Allies to send troops from India to Mesopotamia--also easy for them to interdict the one rail line that runs east from Syria. And if you succeed in pushing into Iraq, you will have to detach forces to guard your southern flank from attacks coming down the Nile or along the Red Sea.

If you really crave for offensive action in the ETO and Algeria is still neutral, you might consider preempting the Allies and taking it before they can. It's generally easy to take Algiers, assuming you have built up your amphib capability. But then be prepared to fight it out on the Moroccan-Algerian frontier, b/c you will have a hard time preventing an Allied counter-invasion on the Atlantic coast of Morocco.

But really, your smartest course of action is probably to secure all ports in France and the Low Countries while building up a strategic reserve to counter any major incursions. Sooner or later, he's going to be able to hit you with a big attack and you need to be ready.

It is certainly possible even versus a competent opponent, unless such opponent gets lucky breakthroughs and gets level 2 infantry weapons early.

As the germans, I recommend invading as early as possible (march to may)
