Good day all,

After a long break, I am back trying to get a handle on CMO. As a retired Artillery officer, I have found the tactics of air and naval operations a very different, and fun, challenge. I am forced to really think through a different set of rules and options.

I have worked my way through many of the tutorials again, to understand the changes from CMANO to CMO and to refresh my understanding of the game mechanics. I then went looking for a low complexity and difficulty level game to try things out. As a result, I selected Deter, Detect and Defend which is created by Christopher Comars aka Randomizer.

Since it has been a while since I have posted here, my approach is to use this thread to show my thought process as I plan my response and execute the plan. Thus, there will be spoilers.

If you want to provide me suggestions, laugh at my efforts (along with me) or give me encouragement, please do. I enjoy the interaction on these forums. Here we go:

These are my orders and a screen shot of the Area of operations:

NORADOPO 08-241 212052Z AUG 62

The Soviets will be coming with bombers - from the scenario notes I can see that they have four different bombers:

3M Bison B,
Tu-95KD Bear B,
Tu-22B Blinder A and
Tu-16 Badger A

I think that scariest of this lot is the Bear B as they can launch their attack from 310nm. All the other planes need to get within 3nm of the target.

I suspect that they will be coming down the Pacific Coast over British Columbia enroute to the Seattle region.

Here is a look at my forces.

I'm a little confused by the loadouts on the CF-101Bs as I can not find an OECM loadout in the database viewer...

Actually Baloogan did not create Deter, Detect, Defend, I did and it was my very first scenario for CMANO uploaded shortly after the games' release. Hopefully you enjoy it and I am looking forward to your AAR. Thanks for trying the scenario!

It looks like you're playing an earlier version without the NORAD ADIZ imposed as a Player limitation. That version also includes slightly degraded Nike Hercules defences for the Seattle area just to make things a bit tougher.

Chris,

I just edited my comments above to give you credit. Sorry for the initial mistake.

It looks like an interesting scenario and I will have fun!!!

Initial thoughts

I do not control all of the friendly resources. The Pinetree line and Navy resources are out of my control, but should provide me information.

I have no resources in air, but I do have some resources ready to take off.

I need to extend my airspace observation to the NW to detect Soviet bombers early.

The Soviet Bears are the biggest threat – as depending on their payload can launch from 310nm. All of the other planes need to close with their targets. This means, that I need to prioritize the destruction of the Bears and as far from home as possible. I might be able to have two or three layers to my defence.

Plane ranges

F-106 200nm
F-102A 450nm
F-101B 150nm
F-89J 300nm

I need planes in the air, but it would also be smart, I think, to have planes ready on the airfields to launch. My planes can only stay in the air for so long.

I do have six SAM batteries near Seatlle that can also attack the Soviet planes. These batteries have sensors that can detect planes between 110 and 200nm. The maximum range of the missiles is 80nm. They can attack both planes and missiles/guided bombs.

I have developed three, very similar, options of how to respond to the Soviet Bombers. Here is the first option

MikeJ19,

I've not played this one, but it looks intriguing and your options seem logical. I would choose the option that seems best suited to the amount of time you think you have. Canada and Washington are counting on you...

BTW, I like your AAR style.

I'll be watching with interest,

I remember playing this one multiple times, great scenario. Consequence of error is very steep...

I think that I am ready to begin - the plan and initial missions are set up.

Like some of the other times I have played this game, setting up the various missions has taken me a while. I need to improve my understanding of how to assign different planes to the same mission. Also, planes with different loadouts. I think that I can sometimes make this more difficult than it needs to be.

In the morning, I will start this up and see where it goes...

It is too bad that the final version of this scenario from May 2017 never made it into the Community Scenario Pack updates. In it the Aircraft Damage is activated, the Nike batteries were 'adjusted' while a NORAD Air Defence Identification Zone about 200 NM west of the coast prevented the Player from intercepting too far out into the Pacific in accordance with what my research disclosed about NORAD doctrine in the early 1960's. I also bumped up the penalty for losing Vancouver just because it was too easy for the Player to just abandon it and concentrate on defending the Seattle area exclusively. The goal for the changes was to make it a bit more difficult for the Player.

It can be found here: Randomizer's Apocalypse Collection

Anyway, Good Hunting! Am very much looking forward to this AAR. Thanks for posting it.

Hi Mike

I can highly recommend downloading the latest version of the scenario.
The version in the scenario pack isn´t working right.
Without spoiling anything, the missile armed Bears are not working properly for one.

Besides, your CF-101´s will be loaded with proper weapons instead of the OECM loadout that confused you, in Randomizers Apocalypse pack.
You will need them, so please download that version before you start.

A few pointers to remember.

Weapons of this era suck. The Falcon missile is highly unreliable and carry a small warhead, so calculate several missiles per target to get a kill.
Never fire your missiles at longer range than ca. 50% of max range to minimize range penalties.
The one exception is the AIR-2 Genie. This is a nuclear rocket and should be used at max range against formations of bombers.
It can easily take out three bombers if they are flying in a close formation.

Also remember that the IR Falcon is a stern chaser, meaning that it have to be fired almost directly behind the target for it to lock on.

Hope this helps and I´m looking forward to reading your AAR.

Søren

Soren,

Okay, just downloaded the newer version of this scenario. I will try things out on the version for a bit first - it will give me some good hints...

Thanks for your suggestions and pointers!

Have a good day,

Mike

I actually managed to beat this one.

My $0.02:

This scenario is all about using the AIR-2 Genie to wipe out entire cells of bombers in the first pass. Use manual allocation. You don't have time to tail chase for AIM-4s, especially when it gets harder. That's the nuclear war equivalent of bringing a knife to a gunfight. If someone is stuck without AIR-2's in the loadout, use them to identify airliners.

Also, I don't recommend CAPs if some of your guys end up bringing their Genies home. Everyone that takes off needs to kill bombers. The Century Series was designed to go supersonic for a reason. Scramble, try to get to them at your max A/B range, take them out with a Genie on the first pass, then get home right away to reload and refuel. Repeat. And always use the AIR-2 loadout, if available.

The slower F-89 is another matter though, and up to you, but the Mighty Mouse is decidedly obsolete by 1962.

Well, that was not good. I did not end up seeing anymore Soviet planes, so could not use the Genies.

Hi Mike

You should use the version from Randomizers link.
The version in the community pack contains some errors for some reason.
Several missile armed Bear flights are RTB from the start, and there is the issue with loadouts of the Voodoo´s.

This is the final version of the scenario and it´s a bit harder than the version you tried, but still possible to win.
I have played it numerous times and also experimented with other interceptors, nuclear armed Nike´s and other fun things
