Below is the full extent of Japan's submarine fleet.

That is some serious underwater carnage! Only 4 of those subs were in service on Dec 7, 1941. A couple are '43 or '44 builds, which indicates that your predecessor must have continued to build IJN subs...and then lost almost all of them!

What is Roger doing that's so sub-deadly?

Honestly, I don't know. I have limited fuel at this stage and I came into this game in April of '45. He has a *lot* of air groups on search so my WAG is that he was boosting his detection levels and then the late-war anti-sub munitions are of course, much more effective in 1945...

I just recently placed a few subs on patrol to the south of Japan. Most of my ships remain in TFs as Roger seems fond of playing whack-a-mole with ports that look like they might have ships in them.

Last turn Roger really lit up Muroran. I think there were about 20 large bomber strikes. Port Damage 81%, AF Service 100%, & AF Runway @ 97%...

At Fushun I tried another Shock attack in an effort to drive the Chines out of the hex so I could try and strat-move the heck out of there. I only had 1-1 odds.

I had an AO with a pair of DD headed back to Japan after slurping 2k of fuel from Chichi-jima. She took a torpedo and sank.

There's an El Dorado near Guadalcanal that I'm trying to sneak to but it really looks like Roger has a swell search umbrella up. I don't have a choice - I've gotta try to go for it but I'm not sure of the best way. I've set up a TF with 5 tankers and 4DD but I'm wondering if I want to try and send individual tankers (smaller and slower) and hope they maintain a low DL…

Shikuka is now under Russian ownership. Right now Roger is steam-rolling Japan into a parking lot... <wry grin>

Roger runs a SCCTF of 4 DD into Niigata and sinks three of my SC.

Lotsa air attacks, and sweeps, and searches, and allied aircraft… Roger owns the skies.

At Toyohara my Coastal defense is doing a good job tapping into an invasion force. Roger is not even providing escorts; there's little I can do.

I sent a small DD TF to the north of Japan in an attempt to draw Roger's attention while my tanker TF makes a run to the south. My hope is to make him think I'm headed for the Bonin Isles...

That garrison at Tulagi has plenty of fuel, but no supplies! They probably wish they could eat gasoline!

I hope you brought along a few sandwiches or something for them to trade for gas

Oh Come on - they've got 136 tons of supplies and it's the end of April in 1945. How much longer do you think they have to hold out?

I mean - they're on an island. You'd think someone knows how to fish...

Good luck with the fuel convoy. Not only getting it there, but getting it home. :)

for how fuel demand at bases is determined.  The total demand is made up by a structural permanent demand and a temporary demand.

Alfred

Thanks Alfred.

I am interpreting your notes in the light of a Japan with plenty of oil/fuel/supplies/resources. In this current map of Japan, Matsue had 800 fuel points last turn. It's just that almost every base in Japan is asking for resources and it seems to me that almost everything would push to Fukuoka or Tokyo. But every turn I'm finding smaller bases that receive or loose points of fuel or supplies and I'm not sure if there is a draw, a push, or maybe even a tiny bit of production that is creating the differences I see.

And again - thanks for the link to your previous post - I've book-marked it.

Alogrithms like the supply AI struggle when demand greatly exceeds supply. What Alfred sent you though is still pertinent. You have permanent demand and temporary. You can't change the first, you can the second.

Works for both fuel and supply.

I've been able to pull/move supplies around in Manchukuo but nothing much is working in Japan proper. Almost every base is red or yellow... If you've got some thoughts, please feel free to school me. :-)

So let's say I get my TF to Guadalcanal and bring back 40,000 tons of fuel. If I put it in a base and have fuel stockpiling on, will it stay there? Every base in Japan needs fuel...

DW:
nothing easy here.
to start, you're gonna have to some hand calcs. On the Home Isles, you gotta calculate how much supply you produce each turn (tracker can tell you or you add it up). Then how much are your troops eating each day (again, tracker can tell you or you add it up). I suspect that may be negative (production-army demand).

If it is in fact negative, you're pretty pooched.

If it is positive, then the left over supply is what you can use for air ops and/or replacements.
If it is positive, you have one major permanent demand, Tokyo the capital and the largest concentration of HI/LI/factories. So Tokyo is your first, best (as in easiest) location to pool supply/fuel.
Next, you have your temporary demand which is units in place. But not all units are equal. Command HQ's want 50K supply with them. At this point you have at least one command HQ in the HI. Move all of them to the same place, Tokyo to start. You likely have a lot of other troops there already (AA, ENG, etc) which adds to the demand. Now put the supply demand slider to max in Tokyo and min everywhere else. Wait 3 turns. Your calculated excess supply should start showing in Tokyo.

Moving it elsewhere is similar exercise, but you have to be more careful and thorough because the permanent demand in Tokyo as capital cannot move, so you are always fighting that …

Good luck!

Thanks for putting up the VP screen. To me it looks far better than I thought it would. He needs about a 60K swing in VP to get you to 2-1 (without an excessive use of the Abombs) and he does not have a whole lot of time left. So, that at least is a ray of hope. :)

Regarding my fuel TF headed towards Guadalcanal:
Via email intel, Roger let on that he saw a TF heading towards the Philippines and wondered if it was my carriers. I'm more than willing to let him hunt around the PI as long as I can keep some distance from his ships. The challenge for me right now is that I'm sailing blind. I have no search aircraft anywhere to get a feel for if Roger has anything near me… Come on providence - don't fail me now!

Lotsa bombings and sweeps and attacks against my army grunts.

This is good info to feed to Japan's Public Relations Department:

OK - I was hoping you had a silver bullet I might-could use. I've already set all the bases to min except Tokyo so I guess there's no point crunching numbers; I'm pooched.

I guess a silver lining is that I made it to May - eh? And I still have a few opportunities to slip a cross or get jab in. What more can Japan ask for at this stage of the war?

If you crunch numbers it may show (help you find) supply usage that you are unaware of … air units active, replacements on somewhere, etc. In the Mike Solli school of IJ economy, crunching number is de rigeur. :)

Roger sent me a pic of one of his destroyers after a kamikaze hit it. It's nice to see I can still land a blow.

Bombers - Roger has lots 4E bombers. The last turn there were several raids of over 100. I don't know if Roger was holding them back or if the previous player for Japan didn't try to whittle them down but OMGosh!

I'm fielding Claudes now for CAP in a few of my fighter groups - lol.

My TF running for fuel is still alive and seems to be undetected so far.

The allies get ungodly amounts of 4E bombers, and, just to cheer you up, it gets even worse once the war in Europe is over and all those bombers from Bomber Command, the 8th Airforce and the 15th airforce have nothing to do. :)

I'm no 1275psi but I like his writing and the story he tells during his game. This scene probably won't last long but I wanted to give that writing style a try. :-)

4 MAY 1945
TF Commander: Captain Kokura, N.
Tanker TF19 - Silent Prayer
○ DDs Onami, Kishinarri, Suzukaze, & Hatsuharu
○ AO Roho Maru
○ TKs Hoyo Maru, Ryuei Maru, Seihin Maru, & Mirii Maru
Location: West of Satawal (105,105) by 92 nm.

Captain Kokura looked stoically ahead at blue seas and calm skies. They were slipping past the Caroline Islands and now approaching their closest point to known allied territory, Satawal Isle, a miserably little island with a deep lagoon that made for a good port. The allies had captured it sometime in mid-1944.

Liquid gold was what Kokura was after, fuel for their warships, that they might push forth for one last great engagement with devil-giant before all was lost. The fuel was what was demanded for the Emperor's Honor. To fight valiantly to the end while grasping and cherishing every moment of life until there was life no more. It was bushido. It was the way. The round-eyes would never understand such honor; it was beyond their upbringing.

For Captain Kokura, his honor was all he had left.

Tanker TF19 - Silent Prayer

○ AO Roho Maru
○ TKs Hoyo Maru, Ryuei Maru, Seihin Maru, & Mirii Maru
Location: East of Bismarck Archipelago

The weather had been rough the last two days but things were clearing up. Noburu Kokura was once again on the bridge. During the initial breakout from Tokyo, the crew of the Hoyo Maru had been expecting death from the allied planes above or the enemy subs below. That they had made it this far without incident seemed to be breathing new life into them.

It was good to see men acting like men again. It was good to feel purpose.

So I've had pretty good results with FP and the older fighters, which are all slow-flying aircraft. I wonder if the reduced speed increases the effectiveness of my kamikaze units. Most of my kamikazes have very low experience but "attack accuracy" might be increased as kamikazes have more time to line up their targets?

My tanker TF is one hex away from the Tulagi honeypot. I still need to figure out how to get it back to Tokyo. Roger is becoming more aggressive. I think he's beginning to realize that the teeth of Japan are old and brittle.

One takeaway from playing the endgame with Roger is the use of FP as kamikaze. No requirement of an airfield is a plus. The payload of a FP (for Japan the best looks to be 4x60kg GP) is probably too light for larger warships but against Landing, Auxillary, and Merchant shipping, FP work just fine.

I wish I had more Anne or Mary light bombers as I'd like to test those out as kamikaze. They, at least, have a 250kg bomb.

Cool beans, durnedwolf.

Some time ago, Bullwinkle talked about his experiences in a late-war game. Don't recall if that was PBEM, a scenario or vs. the AI. Anyways, he talked up the impact (literally and figuratively) of 2E IJAAF bombers from the Allied perspective. He thought they were terribly effective as kamikazes. When they hit, they hit very hard and really made a mess of things.

What are your pools of Sally-Ic, IIa and Helens looking like?

I've set up a single group of Betty, Frances, Sally, and Helen. Early on in my take-over as Japan, the Betty group got in a kamikaze attack. Since then, none of my 2E kamikaze groups have come out to play. Part of that, though, is the whack-a-mole game Roger and I are playing. I find an airfield that I can fly out of and move my 2E to it. They have an opportunity to fly but regardless, within a turn or two, Roger brings over a few hundred bombers to take out the airstrip. It's not much fun to be Japan right now. I really have to focus on the minor victories.

So the past couple of days, Roger has been pasting Sapporo. I had a bunch of merchies there (emphasis on the word had). But they were all at or around 0 on fuel. And all of my bases in the home islands have 0 fuel, so it is what it is.

I haven't really posted much as it's been the same stuff - just different days. We play wack-a-mole on the airfields that I try to fly out of, and for land combat, Roger takes a hex or base from my ground troops that, apparently one can count ribs on each of the troops, and every now and then Roger finishes things off with a good naval bombardment or two.

Operation Go-Juice is on the return phase, trying to sneak back to Tokyo with their precious cargo of fuel. From my perspective, it's all about the DL dice rolls now. TF19 is still out in the boonies but as it draws nearer to Japan I expect the chances of detection to increase. If Operation Go-Juice is successful, it would give my carriers one last charge against the allied forces before the mighty warships ships of Japan slip beneath the waves.

If those that are dues-paying Threadsters would offer up a prayer for TF19 to the Thread, I'm sure Commander Terajima would greatly appreciate it. Please be careful of OpSec but, if Roger monitors the Thread, it'd be funny to see him asking what TF19 is - lol.

Operation Go-Juice is still in play.

In 3 days I get the CV Katsuragi.

I'm still receiving ships that I can milk for fuel - it's just that decent aircraft have been few and far to come by. Over the next 10 days, I'll pick up an additional 30 Tony plus some Franks and A6M5c. Roger is becoming bolder with some of his bombardment TFs. I'm hoping that in the next few turns I'll be able to field a good Carrier TF that can slip out and give him a good spank.
