Sorry if I missed this but has anyone developed a strategy for keeping Russia from revolting early?

Don’t lose the war?

Historically, Russia was a glass cannon. Even just losing some battles in distant Manchuria in 1905-6 caused nationwide revolt so it’s pretty accurate for Russia to suffer unrest if it starts losing battles even early on in the war. The Russian Revolution chain only starts when you get really low on morale, and you only get low on morale if you start losing.

Some obvious points if you’re still having trouble winning as Russia:

- make sure the UK-Russia convoy is on maximum (use the convoy screen in the war maps interface) and keep the convoy line open and free of raiders.

- try to knock the Ottomans out of the war and re-open the Dardanelles to both free up Russian forces in the Caucasus and bring extra supplies in.

- make sure to research trench warfare and infantry weapons as the Russians, and keep your army upgraded. Upgraded artillery is also important, if expensive.

Sorry if these are very obvious points but without knowing more about the problems you’re having it is hard to be more specific.

FOARP made some important points.

I would also add that make sure to research the Infantry Warfare, to keep the Russian units' morale stable. As Russia, you will highly likely lost all the NM Objects in Poland in 1915-1916. And as a result your units' morale will be reduced a significant amount and take much more beating. With Infantry Warfare ≥ 2 levels, and sufficient Trench levels, Russian units can hold the ground on their own when facing infantry attacks.

I kept Russia in the fight until mid 1918. I found the key was the 1914 strategy.

Do not attack East Prussia. Konigsburg and Danzig look like tempting targets, but you will be hit by very powerful German counter attacks.

Concentrate on attacking the Austro-Hungarians north of the Carpathians. Lemburg and Przemysl are realistic targets. The key is to realise when you are no longer on the offensive. This is when German forces arrive to shore up the Austro-Hungarians. As soon as you begin to come up against the Germans, go on the defensive. This may mean giving up Przemysl or abandoning attempts to capture the town. Entrench using rivers as a defensive line.

German forces will soon launch an attack in the centre towards Warsaw. This means you may have to abandon Lodz. Form a strong defensive line around Warsaw and along the Vistula river.

The first couple of games I played the Russians folded early. This was down to heavy casualties. I kept reforming corps when I needed to research. Avoid throwing away your forces. Research infantry, trench and artillery as priorities.

Russia's strategy is very dependent on what the Germans do. If Germany goes all in to France, then Russia needs to go all in to Germany. If Germany doesn't declare war on Belgium, then Russia needs to go on the defensive everywhere and brace for that combined German/Austrian onslaught. If the Central Powers go south, then Russia can try and knock out Austria. If everything is going against Russia, then France needs to prepare everything for when it gets Artillery level 1. As soon as it can break trenches with artillery (and ideally have all three units on the western front with ammo techs researched and researching) then France needs to rescue Russia through an offensive into the Ruhr. Typically I've found East First is a losing strategy for Germany. France, if played right, can break into the Ruhr before Germany and Austria can collapse the Russians with game mechanics as they stand right now.

In addition to the infantry and trench warfare techs mentioned above, I would also argue that industry and production have a much larger impact in this game then in the World War II games. Industrial warfare is expensive, and it is hard to do attrition if you are making half of what your opponent is making. Russia can go from 230 MPPs a turn in 1914 to 430 by the end of 1915 even with loss of territory just through industrial techs, with no British support at all. That is the difference between victory and defeat a lot of the time.

Definitely. I have a tendency to purchase industry and production for Russia within 1914, and if the game continues into 1916 I often find Russia starts with considerable amount of MPPs every turn. Romania will give Russia another pack of income as well.
