So, there is no tutorial, even though the documentation says there is. Even though my system meets game requirements, all I get is a black screen. Updates fail. There is no way to uninstall, it seems. Oh, and Matrix won't refund the money. Run away. Fast.

I have been playing this game since the day it came out, across 3 different computer systems and had no problems. Maybe ask for a bit of help before bashing the game.

This is actually a government test. You've been entered on a list of "expendables".

Yeah, they gave up on my home planet.

Sounds like you did not follow the required steps to download the correct files, and install them in the correct order.
It is possible that you had a glitch in the download that made a file unusable. If you have the serial number from when you bought the game you should be able to download again and try the install. Remember, you are downloading a compressed file and cannot use it directly, you have to run the file to extract the contents into the game folder (it will create all that). Then you have to download and run the compressed patch file that patches the game to the latest official version. That will install everything in the same folder with the game and make changes to some things.

After that you should be able to run the game from the WarInThePacific-AdmiralEdition.exe in the game folder. That would get you started but you will need to read up on the switches (small text commands) that you need to put in your game Shortcut properties to make this 2009 game work with 2020 hardware and Operating Systems. It isn't all that hard, it just takes a bit of determination and willingness to experiment.

If you're still lurking here DrRevKev... see the recent post (https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4802448), TruGrit provided an exceptionally clear example of the switches that are typically needed on current PCs. Coupled with BB's advice above you should be up and running in no time...
