My first naval screw up of the game.

On Dec 9 a small TF dropped a small JAAF unit at Morotai. On the 10th, after unloading, the CL DeRuyter and 4 DDs intercepted and sank the PB and 2 xAXL. Then my mistake. On the 11th, I sent a 2 BB TF with escorts that was near Davao to Talaud-eilanden thinking I would be protecting the amphib TF there (orange line). But, that TF was moving back to Babeldaob, so my protection was for naught. The DeRuyter TF moved northeast from Morotai (blue line), intercepted the Talaud amphib TF (yellow star), sinking several empty transports, THEN continued northeast and sank more tranports (no troops, other yellow star) of another amphib TF waiting it's turn off the east coast of Mindanao. My BB TF reacted in vain, but couldn't catch up. Then DeRuyter disappeared!

You can see the search pattern from Babeldaob. A lot of Allied TFs are shown west of Mindanao, but no sign of DeRuyter. I suspect it continued north and west to the Sulu Sea based solely on the reaction direction of my BB TF. I should have either kept the amphibs at Talaud when the BBs moved there, OR moved them NORTH toward Davao, keeping my BBs south of them and between the transports and DeRuyter. I guess.

Edit to add: Also, on the 10th, CVL Ryujo's Kates put a torpedo in CA Houston at Zamboanga. So, it and CL Boise are still in the area.

So, my plan for Dec 12th is -

The wayward BB TF, now southeast of Mindanao, will head to Cagayan followed by the amphib TF carrying 16 Div(-). The other 2 BB TF will loop part way around the southern tip of Mindanao, followed by the CVL TF, and an amphib TF destined for Zamboanga. I'm limiting the distance moved by the BBs so that the amphibs can keep up.

Troops have landed at Davao and will capture that base today. Those transports are protected by 2 heavy cruisers. The other 4 TFs shown are heading to Babeldaob; the one from the north is a CL and 4 DDs. CVL Ryujo is out of torpedoes and the Kates are now at half strength, so will be retiring soon. Torpedo armed Betties are at Babeldaob, but have been idle. Once Davao is secured some of our search aircraft will move there.

Yes, the game is young, and the opponent is likely to screw up, too.

Which brings me to the developing saga of CL DeRuyter - the cruiser laid waste to 2 or 3 of my amphib task forces, fortunately sinking only empty ships, and managed to stay off my radar (so to speak) for days. Well, it finally showed up, not in the Sulu Sea where I thought it might have gone, but down by the little island called Waigeo. Not only out of ammo, but out of gas!

Which doesn't say much for my Betty pilots - the ships are not moving, but only 1 torpedo out of 26 hit! Seriously?

Here's the first week in Malaya -

On Dec 7 one regiment of 18 Div landed at Kota Bharu, followed by masses of aviation support and engineers. The other two regiments landed at Kuantan. Unloading finished on the 8th, and attacks on the 9th captured both bases. At Mersing 5 Div landed on the 8th, attacked to reduce forts to zero on the 9th, and captured the base on the 10th. 6 Tank Regt arrived to reinforce Mersing on the 12th-13th.

10 Tank Regiment landed at Patani on the 7th, then moved across the peninsula toward Georgetown, but ran into the 6th and 11th Indian Brigades fleeing from Alor Star. The vacant Alor Star flipped on the 11th allowing 14 Tank Regiment to continue on its railroad journey right into town. 14 Tk will join 10 Tk to attack down the west coast.

On Luzon -

As mentioned earlier in this commentary, the landings at Aparri are intended to be a feint, although any feint can be reinforced to become something bigger. Anyway, Tanaka and Kanno landed at Aparri on Dec 7, captured the base, and by Dec 13 had reloaded transports bound for Palembang with the rest of 48 Div. 65 Bde and lots of aviation support and engineers are now at Aparri, with 7 Tank Rgt moving into Tuguegarao, which has been abandoned by the US battalion. Since there have been no landings at Vigan or San Fernando, my opponent has determined these landings to be a ruse (his words). He forgets 38 Div at Hong Kong! And he now expects early assaults on Java and/or Port Moresby (again, his words).

How/when this plays out will be determined by his reactions. Manila and Clark Field are being bombed daily and damage is not being repaired, so forts aren't being built either. The fighter battle for air superiority follows (losses per day, each side):

Dec 7 - 4 Zeroes, 9 US (6 Warhawks, 3 P-26)
Dec 8 - 3 Zeroes, 9 US
Dec 9 - 1 Zero, 3 Warhawks

Mindanao Dec 10 - 16

Lightly defended Davao was easily captured. More heavily defended Cagayan took an extra day to reduce forts. The defenders at Cagayan retreated to Malaybalay and will be destroyed there. Reinforcements for Zamboanga are enroute, as is an invasion force for Dadjangas. Kimura and Miura have reformed 33 Inf Rgt at Davao and have loaded transports for Butuan on the north of the island. After Mindanao is secure 16 Div will attack Tarakan, Samarinda, and Balikpapan. 2 Div is arriving at Babeldaob and will attack Ambon next.

Destroyed Captain Hara likened naval bomber attack lone ships on the sea as a hawk diving on a rat in a cage it pokes one eye out then turns and pokes the other out and then goes back to it's perch.

Was Adelaide out of ammo, too? Did Raranga pick up the original defenders of Kavieng? There were no defenders there when the naval guard force attacked. Was he trying to move them to Rabaul? Anyway, 4 Div/B is unloading at Rabaul and a base force is enroute from Truk.

Here's the situation at 0200 hrs, Dec 19 -

It's highly unlikely that a lone BB is wandering the South Pacific at this point. But, if it is, the still undetected KB will resolve the issue in the morning.

This may be the last update on Mindanao (until 1944) -

The Empire controls the entire island, except Surigao in the northeast (vacant) and Malaybalay; the first attack at Malaybalay reduced forts to 0; the base will be captured on Dec 20 with the defenders either retreating to the east toward Surigao, or surrendering. If they retreat they will never reach Surigao and will be bombed into oblivion.

Naval stragglers heading SW from Luzon will be intercepted by a cruiser TF and sunk, hopefully, since Netties don't do well against small craft such as those, in my experience.

Conquest of Mindanao frees up 16 Div for the southeastern coast of Borneo - Tarakan, Samarinda, and Balikpapan. Regiments of 2 Div are reloading transports at Babeldaob for Ambon; other parts of 2 Div on Mindanao will be picked up to support ops on Borneo or Ambon, as necessary (or both sequentially).

The question is - where will Enterprise go for initial repairs? Sydney or Soerabaja? Soerabaja would be safest for now, but longer term Sydney may be a better choice. So, the opportunity presents itself to send KB from its current position supporting a landing at Tulagi, thru the strait between Australia and New Guinea (I know it has a name, just can't think of it), and intercept Enterprise and(?) Lexington.

But, it seems the question is moot, as the following intel via email details -

Just in case anyone is following this - the game hasn't ended, but we're moving along at the glacial pace of about 1 turn a week. Not my choice. I've been told each of the past 2 weeks that I'd have the turn tomorrow - still waiting. Whatever!

Since the previous map, the Imperial Guard Div landed at Mersing (by sea from Bangkok) to reinforce the assault on Johore Bharu. Elements of 18 Div captured Temuloh on Dec 19 via shock attack across the river. A tank regiment captured Taiping on Dec 21 unopposed. The initial defenders of Alor Star found their way into Georgetown, were surrounded and attacked by tanks, and surrendered on Dec 22; the heavy industry sustained no damage.

Sumatra

Lead elements of 48 Div landed at Palembang on Dec 16 and captured the base and oil fields, largely intact, on Dec 17; oil was 883(17) and the refinery 1001(19). Only the oil will be repaired. Praboemoelih was captured on Dec 20 and Djambi was captured by 4 Tank Rgt on Dec 21; oil was 245(5). 33 Div (-) has also landed at Palembang, but as it's not needed to capture southern Sumatra, it will soon be extracted for the conquest of northern Sumatra. Zeroes and Oscars fly CAP over Palembang while waiting for bigger AA guns to arrive.

Merry Christmas

We haven't quit - my Allied opponent was struggling with computer issues and then he got "the virus" - him, not the computer. We have resumed with the Dec 24 turn, where the Empire captured Johore Bharu (resources trashed), Tulagi, Lahat (dot base near Benkoelen on Sumatra), and Sandakan (dot base on east coast of Borneo). Chengchow, China will be entered from the SW and NW (Loyang) on Christmas day. Mopping up on Mindanao continues and troops there are loading transports for points south. 38 Div, resting at Hong Kong, will load transports by brigade as the ships arrive in the next day, or two, and head for Tarakan, Samarinda, and Balikpapan. KB is supporting a Christmas day landing at Milne Bay by 144 Rgt, after which it will head for the DEI to support the invasion of Java.

Quick update - we are on a slight pause again, due to power outage in Connecticut from the tropical storm. Those of us on the west coast of Florida felt no effects of the storm as it moved up the east coast.

Dec 25 - Tawau and Malacca were captured (resource 97(3)). Several Allied units north of Malacca are now out of supply and have no retreat route.

Dec 26 - Milne Bay, Laoag, and Jesselton were captured.

Dec 27 - Kofiau was captured (vacant dot base somewhere between Babeldaob and Ambon).

Dec 28 - Namlea and Tandjoengselor were captured (both vacant).

Dec 29 - Mauban flipped back to the Allies; Chengchow, Ambon, Kuala Lumpur, and Sidate were captured. Resource and light industry at Chengchow is totally trashed. The defenders at Kuala Lumpur surrendered with no retreat available. The capture of Sidate removes the retreat route for Allied units at Manado.

I'm not expecting a turn back until the weekend, as the forecast for power restoration up north is Friday.

Dec 30, 1941 - Jan 2, 1942

Dec 31 - Manado was captured; the surrounded defenders surrendered. Vacant Mergui was captured; the 10 resources undamaged. Vacant Namatanai was captured. San Fernando flipped to Japan, even though Vigan is occupied by an Allied force!

Jan 1 - Lucena flipped to Japan. Vacant Sawahloento was captured; resources are 60(20). Sorong was captured; the defending base force surrendered. Pontianak was captured with the 20 resources intact. Sambas was captured; one defender surrendered, the other five retreated SE into the bush.

Jan 2 - CA Chokai took 2 sub torpedoes near Palembang. Vacant Tarawa was captured. Oosthaven was captured; the defending base force surrendered.

Seems like the IJ is doing very well here. Everything going like clockwork. And the US Enterprise likely sunk already! Your opponent seems to also have the poor habit of transmitting Intel in his emails to you, whether he is conscious of it or not.

I'm wondering, have you thought about taking on some additional risk (or unusual gambits) given how well the IJ campaign is going so far?

The only "stretch" target currently planned is Noumea. 4 Div (at Rabaul and Tulagi currently) has been prepping for Noumea since Dec 7.

18 Div will form at Johore Bharu in a few days, joining 5, 33, Imperial Guard, and elements of 56 Div; all to jump into Singapore. 38 Div is taking the rest of the oil ports in Borneo (Tarakan, Samarinda, and Balikpapan); when done there (by mid-January), they'll be ready for Java. 48 Div has mopped up southern Sumatra and will be available to assist in Java. 2 Div components are in and around Ambon and will take major Timor and Celebes bases before joining the Java invasion. 16 Div (on Mindanao and going into the Philippine Islands [Cebu, Baybay, Iliolo, etc]) is prepped for Manila, but will likely join the Java invasion BEFORE going back to Luzon. One of the divisions going into Singapore may be withdrawn before it's captured to also join in on Java (4 divisions on Java should definitely speed up the conquest). In my view, the main reason events in the DEI are proceeding so quickly is because Luzon has been bypassed, freeing at least 2 divisions for other objectives. Currently, only 65 Bde (at Aparri), and a brigade of 21 Div (at Laoag, moving to Vigan), plus tanks, engineers, and aviation support are on Luzon.

I've done that often when playing the IJ in Mark Herman's Empire of the Sun game. Even bypassing Singapore works (in that game) because you cut off all supply to Singapore and the units there wither on the vine. Go straight for the DEI and the rich oil sources first. I've often wondered if bypassing Singapore could also work in WiTP? Probably not.

Like your concept of 'stretch' plans, and options. Something to incorporate in my own campaigning.

Jan 3 - A midget sub was launched into Townsville, putting a torpedo into CA Portland. Tavoy was captured with the 10 resource intact. Tarakan was captured with the 90 oil and refinery intact.

Jan 4 - Cebu was captured with the 20 resource and light industry intact. Vigan was captured. Cabanantuan, which earlier had flipped to the Empire, was recaptured by the Allies. We were ambushed at Ambon by a light Allied naval force, losing several transports (they had just delivered an Air HQ):

Japanese casualties seem high, but the important factor is the fort reduction. More tanks and engineers are enroute. 18 Div and the 2 separate regiments took the brunt of the casualties; a couple days of bombardments to heal disablements and we'll go at it again.

Jan 8 - Lunga was captured by a brigade of 4 Div.

Jan 9 - Tassafaronga was captured by a brigade of 4 Div; the third brigade is at Tulagi; all 3 are prepping for Noumea. Nanyang was captured; resource is 16(4).
