I can not get more then 100 million people pre collapse no matter how many times I reroll, anyone else seeing this?

I'm currently playing on a planet with over 700 million and planets with over a billion or more are possible.

Generate a normal - large Siwa or larger and then make it as Earthy as humanly possible. You want average temperatures ~15, you want breathable atmo obvs, you want grav between .5 and 1 (higher better), not too many mountains or oceans but enough to generate rain and interesting topography (10ish for both is what I personally target), rainfall (more is better 500mm bare min, 700mm min if you don't want to reroll forever). I don't know if predators affects things or not. Probably not too much. Edible animals I think are a bonus to habitability. Then reroll. You should get around a billion within 10 or 20 rolls assuming you hit all those other parameters mentioned. Rain's key because rain is the big limiter after atmo and extreme temps on plant growth and plant growth is the limit on planetary food supply which is the limit on max pop, as I understand it. You might be able to highroll planets without agriculture with high pops but that will be much rarer.

I spent a *lot* of time rerolling because I wanted nice, densely populated planets.

You want, in order:

0.9 to 1.0g gravity (not above)
12-16°c average temperature (not more, maybe down to 10°)

2-3% mountains
at least 10% oceans
at least 800mm average rainfall, and ideally over 1000mm rainfall, this is the 2nd most important signifier

an atmosphere described as "earth-like"

all of these ingredients give you a chance to roll very densely populated pre-apocalypse planets (my record, so far, is 3.5 billion in 121 settled zones)

of course you still won't have more than 2.5 million people post-apocalypse and never enough population to actually get a tier V or higher city, but you'll have a lot more fun with ruins, I promise you that

Rainfall seems to be the biggest factor for max population. I got 2500mm on a planet that in turn had a population of over 12 billion. I had to quit that game fairly quickly as everything was heavily irraditaed and there were too few surviving prople left to get started.
For a more reasonable scenario you can get about 4 billion people (in several medium to large ruined cities) at 1500mm of rainfall fairly quickly with only a few dozen rerolls.

LOL I seldom break 500mm even with a hell of a lot of rolling. Mostly I get 200 to 300 MM.

Well one use a Siwa class to maximise pops.

Two, you need oceans and some mountains to get rainfall because the game very loosely approximates things like cloud formation and orographic precipitation (at least that what wiki tells me the general term is for things like the rain shadow effect).

Basically oceans plus dense atmo plus possibly some tilt to get more uneven heating equals moist winds equals moist air and cloud formation. Mountains equal air currents have to rise and cooling as they rise until they hit dew point so mostly falling as rain.

It's really cool to see where the game puts barren, arid, semi-arid, moist and wet zones when generating biosphere and how that interacts with mountains, oceans, prevailing winds etc.

Vic's been pretty thorough in his approximations, though hard to say exactly how thorough on some minor effects like tilt. Then again seasonality is modeled based on tilt so maybe it does affect other parameters such as wind and rainfall patterns.

Aim for about 10% ocean and mountain on a .5g+ Siwa with breathable and dense atmo and you should get decent rainfall.

So far, I had two small Siwa class planets with very high population. So planet size may not be too important. One was around 15 Billion, while the other had nearly 17 Billion! An explorers dream, though you better bring your radiation suits...

This generated a 20 billion world with a massive metropolis (in ruins of course) on Siwa

Here is what the metropolis looks like, biggest ruined metropolis I've generated

Sorry for the big images, doesn't seem the spoiler tag is a thing unless the code is something different on this forum.

Saw it at bay12forums.
My scavenger sense is so very much tingling each time I see this picture.

Out of curiosity, how long did it take you to roll this planet?

Since game release pretty much :P

First days since game release I spent an unreasonable amount of time getting life (or rather fail at getting life) on Seth. But in between I spent time on other planets just to see what planets generated. I haven't had an actual game till now. Time spent on generating Siwa was probably only 4-5 hours of real time in total. You may have seen my rants though about Seth :P

But today I woke up and the gaming gods were on my side, today has been super lucky for me in general. I rolled Siwa, as soon as I started up Siwa I had a good planet out of the bat. Good size, good gravity, pretty good temp I guess if a bit on the warm side and good age. Geology gave me good rain out of the gate today, and then population I only rolled a few times when I realized pop was unusually high each roll so I figured could get something good. Its also quite a challenging planet which is good, lots of rebels/independents around and animal life.

Completely makes up the crazy amount of time I spent failing to get something on Seth lol.

I know, your pen name here is forever burnt in my memory as « the Arrakis chasing person ».

I'm glad you finally had a good day with planet generation. That picture of the megalopolis is beyond neat and in my opinion belongs in the game page on the store.
