I just have to add two more important authors to the ongoing list, more inspired by history than straight up history themselves, but in writing about Wehrmacht soldier experiences at ground level there is Paul Carell. Do your own research on him, but Hitler Moves East is a good start.

And secondly, so as not to come off as an incorrigible Germanophile (I also immensely admire Russian history, literature and their character as well), mention has to be made of Vasily Grossman and his magnum opus Life and Fate, a novel.

What a magnum opus of an AAR! I totally agree that this wargame is really something special and I predict it will never leave anyone's SSD once they've tried it. It's truly unique in its combination of breadth and depth of decision-making, and yet is somehow approachable in that there's a distinct RPG element as well.

I believe that no other wargame captures Barbarossa like this one.

Before you start another AAR playing the Soviets, you know that Davide updated the map and the OOB?

I'll be taking a break before I get into that but thanks Klink, I didn't know. I'll be sure to update. I'm glad it is still being worked on. I did my best to push for a Barbarossa Gold upgrade or somesuch but coding, market forces and whatnot see that as very unlikely.

Btw, you are aware how to unlock the editor in DC3, right?

Finally got around to reading this AAR, what a treat! Well done, I look forward to more...there better be more ;) I think the Decisive Campaigns series have started to get some slow building love over the years...but not near enough, all are quite excellent.

Thanks for that gabeeg I appreciate it. And I agree, this gem has been under-rated. A lack of understanding of the Ostfront personalities that were a part of it may be an impediment. A basic knowledge of the history behind this enhances things and will improve your game play.

Finally, when I summon up the nerve, I will do another AAR from the Soviet side against an uber-enhanced AI. Stay tuned.

Cheers,

Stauf
