Thought I would share this with everyone. Started a new game against the AI and thought I would try this scenario. After 2 months of just trying to sink as many IJN ships as possible while they were trying to supply GG and PM, I decided to attempt the capture of Lunga on 9-1-42. I had previously mined the heck out of both Lung and Tulagi, so I attempted a previously succesfull move of landing the entire 1st Marine Div. at Taivo and march to Lunga to attack.

Pulled this move off great, even caught (what I thought at the time) a "bombardment TF" by surprise at Taivo and Mr. Lee commenced to destroy the entire task force including 1 CA, 3 CL's and 5 DD with no losses. The funny thing was this task force had the carrier Junyo with it. Yep sunk it too. The very next turn, Surface combat.....same place, Carrier task force....including the Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu and several CL's and DD's. Shot them up pretty good and as they retired one of my subs put a fish in the Akagi.

Here was the surprise. As the 1st Marine DIV started marching and got about 12 of the 30 distance traveled they stopped and went back because, as to my surprise, the japs had landed about 18,000 troops behind me at Taivo. How this happened with all the ships Lee was tearing up is beyond me.

Now, they have pretty much insured their demise by wasting so many ships but now the 1st Marine Division is in a stalemate until I get some more troops up there. At this point in the scenario, I don't have many Inf troops and am just trying to keep them supplied.

This would have been an excellent move on the AI's part had I not suprised them with Lee and 5 CA's and 6 DD's. I don't understand the use of a TF with Carriers to make the landing or it may have been a TF I didn't see. But imagine the smile on my face when suddenly the surface combat screen comes up and there are carriers that have been surprised. Simply wonderful!

One other thing, I noticed in the Aircraft reinforcment screen in this scenario that there are no P-38's scheduled to arrive at all. Anyone seen this before?

I understand the Aircraft replacement window, this is in the aircraft reinforcement window where you can scroll through the arrival times. It lists no p-38's at all for the entire scenario.

I think it must vary by scenario. I'm playing Scen 15 and I get 1 Squadron of P-38Gs in July 43. I did a quick start of Scen 17 and it showed about 4 sqns pf P-38s in the reinforcements list.

Amazing. I have none listied in my game. Must be the way it is set up. I have it set, IJN 200%, US 140%, Historical, Variable, Jap Sub Doc Off, Us damage control on. Not a problem though, I will just win with what I have. I have put them in rough straits with their carrier losses and several damaged ones. I have Lex, Sara, York, Hornet, Wasp and Enterprise with no damage other than some low SYS. Oh and I have that uber CVL that keeps comming back from Pearl. I've sent that thing back twice. :D

I also have very little in way of infantry units. I'm at about 10/10/42 and only have 1st marine and Americal Div. in Sopac And now as it stands, I have all of both div. at Lunga and am pretty much deadlocked and can't get 2-1 odds. Darn Japs keep running down the slot and droping off reinforcments but its taking a toll on their DD's. I do have the 2nd marines on the way from Pearl but it will be about another 2 weeks before they arrive. The guys on Lunga are moraly depleted, and have extremely high fatigue.

I think the P-40s in the reinforcement screen upgrade to P-38s before they get to you.

Your comitted now, can you free up any troops from oz?

Otherwise bomb the **** out of them with lba and cv planes set to ground attack and send a few BB in to bombard the crap out of the japs as well. With no supplies and massive disruption due to bombardment and bombing they will fold alot quicker.

Or you could march your troops out to the base next to lunga and rest them up and fast transport lots of supplies in until your re-inforcements arrive.

Nah, I'll just grind it out and bomb the crap out of them until they subdue....I like killing Japs...in the game......

I'm considering moving some from oz but want to start attacking PNG soon and they have some serious inf. units in PM and GG so I may need them over there. This senario needs to be approached a little differently than the 17 and 19 ones. Kind of interesting though. It's more of a challenge to the Allies so far.

Good god am I an idiot.....All along I thought I was playing Scen 16 when it's 15 Clash of Titans.. I am sorry for the mix up.........

Ok, new info. My reinforcement screen now lists sqn 419fs with p-38g's to arrive in 375 days. It is now 10/6/42, my previous post was off by 4 days, sorry. 375 days is one year and 10 days. hmmm.. that I guess is better than not at all, but by then the battle will be all but over.

It does not list any other p-38 sqn...I sorted just like you did by aircraft type. And no the other sqn's you had listed I believe the 431,432,433 are not in my list. Does the variable do this just to throw you off?

Anyway, very strange.

I'm a little past where you are in Scen 15. By the end of the month, one of your P39-D squadrons will be refitted with P38-Gs. The P38-G pool will be wiped out by this upgrade and it will take a few weeks to build back up to 24 aircraft (at which time another squadron will be refitted. If you put the new P38s into the line, they will start to lose aircraft (my replacements were given to the weakest squadron in terms of experience..ie. about 55). If the pool is used to replace losses piecemeal, then the arrival of the next squadron will be delayed.

I still haven't seen any evidense of the 431, 32 or 33 P-38 squadrons. The replacements went to the 68th FS.
