After many months, I’ve resumed my utterly shameless AI game. During the hiatus I warned up ye ole memory with a Guadalcanal mini-game. I noticed Sydney’s shipyard was rated 50.

It is only a 30 at the beginning of the campaign game. So I truly did cull the War Room posts and found LoBaron’s 2011 statement that the Allies cannot enlarge their shipyards.

Might have missed something though. It’s a lot of posts to cull through.

Does that still hold—or is there a way?

Thank you for any response!

It is for that scenario only.

The manual is rather straight forward on this to. Only the Japanese side can expand or convert factories and shipyards in the scenarios with production on.

My guess it was increased to 50 as there is no other Allied shipyard in the game.

Yes, it is just for that scenario.

Thank you all for your responses.

I guess I’d assumed SY could not be enlarged through interpreting the manual (“straightforward” in regards to those pages is not the first description that would occur to me, I’m admittedly thick when deciphering instructions in general), but the Guadalcanal scenario threw me.

I'll admit to having my struggles with the manual as well. But those cold and bold red words on the bottom on page 235 forever haunt me whenever I wish I could boost PBY production.

Yeah...factories means shipyards as well. I eventually got it.

All that you have to do is to let the Japanese capture the base, have them expand the shipyard, then recapture the base. I do not know if the expansion paid for but not yet completed will show up for the Allies to finish the work.

Yes it will. I have recaptured several former Allied shipyards from the Japanese and found them expanded but damaged. For the low, low cost (in Allied terms) of 1000 supply per point I repaired them and happily used them to their limits.

I have done that myself. But what I don't know is if the expansion is ordered but not finished whether or not the Allies can finish the expansion, not to mention the repairs to what was originally there.

The expansion is total and occurs in the one action.  What has to be progressively addressed is the repair of the new expanded facility.

Okay, I understand now.

So as a Japanese player, I will offer to expand the Portland shipyard if the Allied player will not attack me on my way there plus kindly stockpile lots of supplies there and remove any ground units.

Make certain you get that reduced to writing.  Otherwise the Japanese player may not be able to sue the Allied player for non compliance with the "contract".

The Japanese player could start building Shinano there just to tie up the shipyard with that white elephant.

A delusional thought balloon settled over Hag... “Huh. And in red bold?? No way. Maybe Shell Shock has a NEWER edition of the manual than me... yeah, that’s it! I’ll just go check... page two-three-five.. .. *digs for the manual* ...two-three... five... aha, here it is! *Long pause* Huh.”

Pretty clear stuff. Thanks, Shell Shock.

Recapturing the shipyards is just the ticket! Diabolically clever. Now all I need is a master plan to recapture Soerabaya.

Since the game ends 1/43, however, I don’t think it’ll happen.
