The US Navy's infantry. There were six plus divisions of them.

All US Marines joined the US Navy as infantrymen. There is no Marine Department, Marine officers are Naval officers. The US Marines are not a separate branch.

Oddly enough yesterday (7/31/2020) marked the 50th anniversary of Black Tot day. The very last day in which the Royal Navy issued a daily rum ration.

The Canadian Navy would follow 2 years later, with New Zealand taking another 20. Australia had dropped the Rum ration in the 1920s.

Way back when, the water was bad but with just a half percent alcohol in it, it was safe to drink. Hence the beer which was weak.

For surface warfare, it's a tough choice between the Navy that never did anything, and the Navy that only did anything with overwhelming material superiority. Difficult to draw a comparison, though the US probably have the edge because they were less likely to be commanders by captains with a deathwish. US Naval Aviators definitely had the edge, because they actually existed, unlike the German equivalent.

For the submarine arm, I think there might be a more complicated answer.

U.S. submarines were certainly plagued by defective torpedoes during the first two years of war, whose faults were due in part to the design emphasis on their use against heavily armored warships. So serious were the defects with the Mark 14 that consideration was given to adopting the highly reliable British Mark VIII torpedo. However, this would have mean extensive delays modifying torpedo tubes to take the new torpedo and retooling assembly lines for its manufacture, and the plan was never adopted.

They also suffered from timid commanders who weren't ready for the strain of an actual war patrol. A lot of weeding out of unfit sub skippers took place after Pearl Harbor.

However, once the faults were remedied, the submarines sank over half the ships of the Japanese merchant marine. They also benefited from not having to face the sort of lavish ASW efforts that the Allies mustered in the Atlantic. It's just a shame that they didn't get a somewhat functional torpedo sooner than mid-1943.

It always seemed an odd coincidence to me that the two nations who had the most success with submarines suffered from faulty torpedoes at the beginning. However, the Germans identified and fixed their issues much sooner.

Status: offline 		The US Mark 14 never became more than a mediocre torpedo during the course of the war, though its overall hit percentage by the end of hostilities was 36%. I think I read once that one Japanese ship was sunk for every eleven US torpedoes fired. There were serious problems with USN destroyer and air dropped torpedoes as well.

It is, perhaps, understandable why the Navy began the war with a flawed torpedo. Torpedoes were staggeringly expensive in Depression-era America. The Mark 14 torpedo cost more than $10,000 in an era when a new car cost $700. So, the penny-pinching weapons bureau did testing using dummy recoverable torpedoes instead of real exploding ones. A lot of US sub commanders must have thought they were being issued dummy torpedoes given how they performed at sea.

Status: offline 		But the testing of the firing pin was easy. That is how they found out that problem and its fix relatively quickly and cheaply.

Do you ever notice how the military penny pinching is in peace time but not in serious wartime?

Status: offline 		Prien and Kretschmer the best. I love the Boardgame Silent Hunters from GMT. Being in a German submarine was crazy, even today being in one of them is kudos to those guys who protect us.
